In A Scholarly Edition of Samuel P. Newman's A Practical System of Rhetoric , Beth L. Hewett argues that Newman, an American nineteenth-century rhetorician, has been unfairly judged by criteria disconnected from his goals and accomplishments. His exceptionally popular textbook is important for how he engaged received theory, fit practice to the era, struggled with age-old questions of thought and language, and spoke to his readers. He operationalized the concept of taste, giving it functionality for invention, and inflected Belletrism with American illustrations suited to the nascent, uniquely American communicative requirements of a democracy. Hewett's modern scholarly edition contextualizes this book as the serious work of a scholar-educator, demonstrating its values in the context of nineteenth-century American rhetorical and textbook history.

Sixteenth century Elizabethan treatises on rhetoric in the vernacular are relatively rare. Guillaume Coatalen offers annotated editions of Richard Reynolds's The Foundacion of Rhetorike (1563), which has not been edited since the 1945 facsimile edition, and of William Medley's unknown Brief Discourse on Rhetoricke which survives in a single manuscript dated 1575. While Reynolds's work is an English adaptation of Aphthonius's Progymnasmata and a preparation for Thomas Wilson's influential Arte of Rhetoricke (1560), Medley's is broader in scope and contains the only full treatment of periodic prose in English in the period. Both works are essential to understand how Elizabethan rhetoric in the vernacular evolved, in particular in aristocratic circles, and its links with Continental developments, notably German.

The modal system of earlier Egyptian complement clauses : a study in pragmatics in a dead language /

The present work proposes a novel analysis of Complement Clauses in Earlier Egyptian language. Contrary to previous assumptions, the grammatical organisation of these constructions is shown to be based on differentiation between Realis and Irrealis modality. The different types of complement clauses attested in Earlier Egyptian are surveyed utilising recent linguistic research on modality and pragmatics. The discussion is based on numerous examples from the ancient texts and on comparisons with many other languages. Emerging from this investigation is a coherent and principled system for expressing Realis and Irrealis meaning in this most ancient of written languages. This book is of notable value to Egyptologists working with texts and to all those interested in modality, grammar, and cognition.

Wopko Jensma: A Monograph : The Interface between Poetry and Schizophrenia /

Wopko Jensma's poetry constitutes an interesting and idiosyncratic response to the strife and turmoil in South Africa in the seventies. Jensma's experimental poetry harnesses the signatures of jazz lyrics, concrete poetry, the avant-garde as well as African dance forms in bizarre cameos of underclass misery and racial oppression. In lieu of metrical regularity and rhyme, the aesthetic experience is simulated by asemantic qualities of speech, sound, and rhythmic undulations in what is best described as a "withdrawal of semantic crutches". Jensma's private idiomatic language, mixing of dialects, the use of syncopation, ellipsis, and experimental topography have no doubt contributed to the cryptic and arcane aberrations associated with schizophrenia. This is the first study that explores the link between Jenma's poetry and schizophrenia and in which image, diction, and story coalesce to voice the anguish and alienation of underclass suffering.

Dieses Buch erbringt den Nachweis, dass das Werk des vermeintlichen Käferdichters Adalbert Stifter durchdrungen ist von Formen der Gewalt und der (Ver-)Führung. In einem werkübergreifenden Ansatz werden einerseits zentrale theoretische Schriften Stifters, andererseits - in einem breit angelegten ,Close Reading'-Teil - einige seiner Erzählungen und autofiktionalen Texte analysiert (u. a. ,Abdias', ,Brigitta', ,Aus dem bairischen Walde'). Die Untersuchung der literarischen Texte erfolgt dabei mit Fokus auf die Darstellung von Gewaltphänomenen und deren Verbindung zur Dichterseherthematik, zu großen Führungsfiguren, gewalttätigen Erziehungskonstellationen und leidenschaftlich-erotischen Verführungsszenarien. Die Studie zeigt, dass Stifters Texte zwar vielfach durchdrungen sind von Versuchen einer Gewaltbesänftigung, dabei aber nicht selten auf Formen der Führung zurückgreifen, die selbst gewalttätige Züge tragen. Freigelegt wird so Stifters Poetik einer (Ver-)Führung der sanften Gewalt.
