In Politics, Patronage and the Transmission of Knowledge in 13th - 15th Century Tabriz , an international group of specialists from different disciplines investigate the role of Tabriz as one of the foremost centres of learning, cultural productivity, and politics in post-Mongol Iran and the Middle East. While standard accounts of Islamicate history have long presented the 13th to 15th centuries as the bottom of the decline paradigm of old, the present volume demonstrates the vibrancy and originality of the intellectual and cultural production of this period by focusing on Tabriz among other capitals of the region. In medieval Persia, the munshī or court secretary belonged to a highly professional, privileged class, enjoying a comfortable income and attractive living conditions. The better one's style of writing, elegant yet concise, and the more types of document one could draft, in each case using the appropriate format and terminology, combined with the right kind of political intelligence, the higher one would rise in munshī hierarchy. Despite his high social standing, a munshī could find himself without a job overnight if he fell victim to court intrigue or if there was a change in power. The author of the universal history contained in the present volume, Būdāq Munshī Qazwīnī (d. late 10th/16th cent.), who in his lifetime worked as a scribe, secretary, local administrator, assessor, controller, and vizier, lost his job several times precisely for these reasons. Written from personal experience, the history's part on the Safavids is of special interest.

The final years of the reign of the Safavids (1501-1722) have been described by many (near-) contemporary authors. A key-event in this period was the rebellion of Malik Maḥmūd Sistānī who, in 1722, in exchange for recognizing Maḥmūd the Afghan as the new shah of Persia rather than doing battle with him in a last-ditch effort to liberate Isfahan, was allowed to claim sovereignty in Mashhad in Khurāsān-an independence which lasted until his defeat in November of 1726. In the standard Persian sources covering this episode, Malik Maḥmūd is described in negative terms, as an adventurer who had to be dealt with. The present work, written by a first-generation Indian of Persian descent, gives a much more positive description of Malik Maḥmūd and his claims to power, often providing hitherto unknown details. Most likely based on oral testimonies by followers who had fled to India, this a is welcome addition to the standard account.

Travel notebooks have existed almost ever since writing was invented. Two travel narratives with high dramatic and literary value from classical antiquity are Homer's Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid . In Arabic literature, Ibn Baṭṭūṭa's (14th cent.) famous Travels come to mind, and for medieval Persian literature, the travel notebook ( Safar-nāma ) of Nāṣir Khusraw (11th cent.). While the safar-nāma has a long history in the Persianate world, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it enjoyed a special kind of popularity. Today, more than 250 safar-nāma , for the most part from that period, are preserved in libraries throughout Iran. The travel notebook published here was written in the autumn of 1908, just after Muḥammad ʿAlī Shāh's coup d'état against the constitutional movement of Iran. Its author Āghā Sayyid Muṣṭafā Tihrānī (Mīrkhānī), a politician and supporter of that movement, writes critically about this and many other social issues while traveling from Tehran to Mashhad, unaware that one day, his comments would be published.

The late Professor Hossein Ziai's interests focused on the Illuminationist ( Ishrāqī ) tradition. This study surveys a distinctive type of the "Islamic" book which has been largely neglected in previous scholarship: the genre of illustrated lithographed books produced in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Iran. In addition to introducing the history of printing in Iran and surveying the investigated sources, the study supplies basic data on genres of illustrated books, artists active in lithographic illustration, and aspects germane to this particular field of art. The documentation includes bibliographical references for 116 illustrated books in a total of 351 particular editions and 150 plates with several hundred single illustrations. Lithographic illustration in Iran constitutes the legitimate successor to manuscript illustration, both in content and style. Contrasting with the latter's refinement, lithographed illustrations were produced in large numbers and served as a powerful medium of popular iconography.

In The Cosmic Perils of Qadi Ḥusayn Maybudī in Fifteenth-Century Iran Alexandra Dunietz explores the life and works of a provincial judge during a time of tribal rivalries and millennial expectations. During the decades preceding the rise of the Safavid regime and the establishment of Shiʿism throughout Iran, Maybudī participated in a network of intellectuals, administrators, and mystics, wrote prolifically, and worked as a judge within the Ak Koyunlu sphere. Drawing upon Maybudī's commentaries and correspondence, the work focuses on the judge's education, complex commentary on the poetry of ʿAlī, the foundational figure of Shiʿism, his professional life, and his death during a rebellion against Safavid control of his hometown. Maybudī exemplified the natural development of relations between Sunnis and Shiis, provincial elites and central authorities, rationalist philosophers and devotees of the esoteric.
