Ostraca de Krokodilô. la correspondance privée et les réseaux personnels de Philoklès, Apollôs et Ischyras : O.Krok. 152-334 / |c [édités par] Adam Bülow-Jacobsen, Jean-Luc Fourne...

: "The fort of Krokodilo on the road from Coptos to Myos Hormos was excavated in 1996-97 by the French mission in the Eastern desert. Its rubbish-dump was formed during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian, and produced over 800 ostraca, 189 of which are published in this volume. While the first volume of Ostraca de Krokodilô concerns military correspondence, this second volume contains private letters exchanged between the inhabitants of Krokodilo and the neighbouring forts, Phoinikon and Persou. The letters were written by three very different characters: Philokles, a green-grocer and pimp, plays a central role in supplying vegetables to the inhabitants of the desert forts and also organises the prostitution; Ischyras, a quarry-man, is an acquaintance of Philokles and his letters are full of declarations of friendship, but also contain some harsh remarks which demonstrate the brutality of certain human relationships; Apollos is probably a soldier, but also functions as a letter-writer for a group of people who are mostly concerned with their provisions of food. This rich corpus gives us a glimpse of the daily life in a society of some 200 people who lived in the desert garrisons at the beginning of the 2nd century AD, and who appear in the ostraca. We are able to witness the importance of solidarity in this hostile environment and the important role of civilians, not least the women, in the life around the forts."--Back cover.

The territory w and related titles during the Middle Kingdom and second intermediate period /

: "This monograph is an in-depth study on the administrative title 'district overseer' (imy-r w) and the term 'district' or 'rural district' (w) in the Egyptian Middle Kingdom (about 2050 to 1650 BC). The sources demonstrate that the territory 'w' was created for some particular administrative needs at the end of the First Intermediate Period. From the historical point of view the management of the 'w' fits the organisation of the society created in this period. The title is still attested in the later Middle Kingdom but lost it importance. The book contains detailed discussions on the title holders and the attestations of 'w'."--Publisher's website, viewed Dec. 21, 2010.

Djekhy & son : doing business in Ancient Egypt /

: "Djekhy & Son, two businessmen living 2500 years ago in the densely populated neighborhoods built around the great temple of Amun at Karnak, worked as funerary service providers in the necropolis on the western bank of the Nile. They were also successful agricultural entrepreneurs, cultivating flax and grain. In 1885, the German Egyptologist August Eisenlohr acquired a unique collection of papyri that turned out to be Djekhy's archive of mainly legal documents. Using this rich trove of evidence, augmented by many other sources, the author has painted a vivid picture of life in ancient Egypt between 570 and 534 BCE, during the little-known Saite period. Approaching the subject from both business and personal aspects, he gives us a fresh look at some facets of ancient Egypt that have mostly been hidden from view-such as putting up one's children as security for a loan."--Publisher description.

Mrs. Tsenhor : A Female Entrepreneur in Ancient Egypt /

: "From the papers she left behind, a picture emerges of a woman who had firm control over her own life. We are dealing here with an Egyptian woman in the fifth century BCE who owned houses and land, worked in the necropolis as a professional choachyte, and most probably did more business of which we are uinaware. In fact, what we have here is an unprecedented and privileged peek into the life of an ancient Egyptian girl next door that will never make it into the official history books"--Publisher description.
