"Lorsque le Directoire décide d'envoyer le général Bonaparte, auréolé de la gloire toute fraîche de la campagne d'Italie, conquérir l'Égypte, ce n'est pas sans arrière-pensée. Vainqueur, il devient plus que jamais le bras armé de la France; vaincu, il est moins dangereux politiquement. Ce calcul, qui se veut doublement gagnant s'avère perdant sur toute la ligne. On ne retient que la bataille des pyramides du haut desquelles "quarante siècles" étaient censés contempler une armée qui ne pouvait pas les voir depuis le champ de bataille et la redécouverte d'un Orient lointain et mystérieux qui n'est pas sans laisser, consciemment ou non, un léger arrière-goût de croisade. Il entreprend un travail de fonds, de façon à doter le pays de structures juridiques, administratives, mais aussi scientifiques directement inspirées du modèle français. Le 26 août 1798, un Institut d'Égypte est créé sur le modèle de l'Institut de France. En quatre sections, l'Institut d'Égypte réunissait les plus brillants membres de la Commission des Sciences et des Arts, les cent cinquante-six savants que le général avait joints à l'expédition, une petite troupe inapte au combat mais aussi précieuse que les ânes, du moins si l'on en croit la légende de la bataille des pyramides! Pour la plupart ingénieurs issus des Ponts-et-Chaussées ou de Polytechnique, ils relevèrent, étudièrent tout ce qui, de la Méditerranée à la Cataracte, sans oublier la mer Rouge et l'Arabie, pouvait l'être, amassant, jusqu'à la défaite de Canope, une somme immense de notes et documents, dont les soixante-deux séances de l'Institut d'Égypte, au fil de ces seulement trois années, donnent une idée vertigineuse."--Page 4 of cover.

Current Research in Egyptology 2018' is a collection of papers and posters presented at the nineteenth symposium of the prestigious international student conference, held at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague on 25th-28th June 2018. The Prague conference was attended by more than 100 people from various countries and institutions. The range of topics discussed was wide, covering all periods of ancient Egyptian and Nubian history and various topics concerning their society, religious life, material culture and archaeological excavations. The event also included six keynote lectures by experts from the Czech Institute of Egyptology, the FA CU (Prof. Mgr. Miroslav Barta, Dr., Doc. PhDr. Hana Vymazalova, Ph.D., Doc. PhDr. Jana Mynarova, Ph.D., Prof. PhDr. Ladislav Bares, CSc., and PhDr. Filip Coppens, Ph.D.) and the University of Vienna (Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter-Christian Janosi).
