New perspectives on pragmatism and analytic philosophy /

: The strong influence of pragmatism in the early 20th-century international debate, its subsequent and apparently inexorable decline, and its recent revival are intertwined with the fate of other currents of thought that have marked the development of contemporary philosophy. This volume clarifies the most recent events of this development focusing on key theoretical issues common both to American classic philosophical tradition and analytical thought. Many essays in this volume belong to what we can call "new" pragmatism, namely a pragmatist perspective that is different from the postmodernist "neo" pragmatism à la Rorty. The volume shows that both pragmatists and analytic thinkers stress the importance of logic and scientific method in order to deal with philosophical problems and seek for a clarification of the relation between our ethical values and our understanding of natural facts. Moreover, the anti-skeptic attitude that characterizes pragmatism as well as most part of analytic philosophy, and their common attention to the problems of language and communication are emphasized. The more sophisticated tools for addressing both theoretical and methodological problems developed by analytic philosophy are pointed out, and the essays show the possible integration of these two forms of speculation that, for too a long time, mutually disregarded one another.
: "The essays in this volume are largely based on the papers presented at the international conference "Pragmatismo e filosofia analitica. Differenze e interazioni", held in Rome in March 2005"--Introduction. : 1 online resource (xx, 152 pages) : Includes bibliographical references and index. : 9789042033221 : Available to subscribing member institutions only.

11. Ägyptologische Tempeltagung : the discourse between tomb and temple /

: This volume of the book series Königtum, Staat und Gesellschaft früher Hochkulturen contains the proceedings of the eleventh international conference dedicated to the ancient Egyptian temple in all its aspects, which was hosted by the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague in May 2017. The main theme of the meeting, the "Discourse between Tomb and Temple" revolved around the many diverse types of interaction that existed between two crucial and tangible expressions of ancient Egyptian thought, belief and culture. Ranging from the Old Kingdom to the era of Roman presence, the fourteen papers in this volume present, analyse and interpret evidence expressed in art, architecture, language, ritual, funerary and other practices, with a spotlight on relations, connections and exchanges between temple and tomb and its development and changing nature over time. This includes topics related to the transmission and exchange of specific textual corpora in addition to individual texts, decorative patterns or architectural elements as well as the interchangeability of rituals. Overall, the papers indicate incontestable distinctions between tomb and temple as well as substantial commonalities. These various forms of exchanges and interactions are moreover not static, but appear to develop and intensify over time, especially from the era of the New Kingdom onward.

Coptic society, literature and religion from late antiquity to modern times : proceedings of the tenth international congress of coptic studies, Rome, September 17th-22th,2012 and...

: It is a consolidated tradition that the 'Proceedings of the International Congresses of Coptic Studies' include both papers organized thematically - according to sections and panels - and a larger group of general reportraits, provided with a rich bibliography, about new research trends and acquisitions in a particular field of Coptology: art, archaeology, literature, linguistics, monasticism, Gnosticism, magic, etc. 'The Proceedings of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies', in particular, contain the reportraits delivered during the Cairo Congress of 2008 (covering the period 2002-2008) and those pronounced during the Rome Congress of 2012 (covering the period 2008-2014), the latter characterized by two new reportraits: "Shenutean studies" and "Ethiopic studies in relation to Egyptian culture". Moreover, it is worth mentioning that for the first time some papers are organized in panels dedicated to very specific topics, in which current research is particularly alive, such as "Bawit: a monastic community, its structure and texts", "Thebes in Late Antiquity", or "The reconstruction and edition of Coptic Biblical Manuscripts". The outcome is a series of tools for the study of Christian Egypt and essays about Coptic literature, art and archaeology seen on the backdrop of Late Antique and Medieval Egyptian society and religion.

Les archives administratives de l'Ancien Empire /

: This collective volume presents the proceedings of an international symposium co-organized by Sorbonne university and Geneva university in Paris between February 12th and 15th 2015. The aim of the such a meeting was to establish a "state of the art" of the papyrological documentation known to us for this specific period of pharaonic history (letters, accounting documents, inventories, working teams' logbooks, personnel registers). By bringing together most specialists of this type of historic sources, it has enabled a complete presentation of the main series of documents from the Memphite area (papyri of Abusir and Sakkara), from Upper or Middle Egypt (Meir, Sharuna, Gebelein, Elephantine), or even from more remote places like the wadi el-Jarf harbour on the Red sea shores or Balat-Ayn Asil archives in the Dakhla oasis. Each contributor gives an overview of the available documentation and the most recent studies related to it. Numerous examples, some of them hitherto unpublished, are illustrated in this volume so as to better understand the way those lots are organized and to fully apprehend how the administration of this period was managed at the provincial as well as central level.
