Concepts of philosophy in Asia and the Islamic world /

The contributions to Concepts of Philosophy in Asia and the Islamic World reflect upon the problems implied in the received notions of philosophy in the respective scholarly literatures. They ask whether, and for what reasons, a text should be categorized as a philosophical text (or excluded from the canon of philosophy), and what this means for the concept of philosophy. The focus on texts and textual corpora is central because it makes authors expose their claims and arguments in direct relation to specific sources, and discourages generalized reflections on the characteristics of, for example, Japanese culture or the Indian mind. The volume demonstrates that close and historically informed readings are the sine qua non in discussing what philosophy is in Asia and the Islamic world, just as much as with regard to Western literature Contributors are Yoko Arisaka, Wolfgang Behr, Thomas Fröhlich, Lisa Indraccolo, Paulus Kaufmann, Iso Kern, Ralf Müller, Gregor Paul, Lisa Raphals, Fabian Schäfer, Ori Sela, Rafael Suter, Christian Uhl, Viatcheslav Vetrov, Yvonne Schulz Zinda, and Nicholas Zufferey.

This new volume of essays marks eighty years since the death of Marmaduke Pickthall. His various roles as translator of the Qurʾan, traveller to the Near East, political journalist writing on behalf of Muslim Turkey, and creator of the Muslim novel are discussed. In later life Pickthall became a prominent member of the British Muslim community in London and Woking, co-worker with Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, supporter of the Khilafat movement, and editor of the journal Islamic Culture under the patronage of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Marmaduke Pickthall: Islam and the Modern World makes an important contribution to the field of Muslims in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. Justus van Effen (1684-1735) geldt algemeen als een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse schrijvers uit de achttiende eeuw. Buitenlandse onderzoekers noemen hem een briljant essayist en een sleutelfiguur bij de overdracht van het ideeëngoed van de Verlichting. Dat alles uitsluitend op basis van zijn Franstalige publicaties. In eigen land daarentegen kent men Van Effen alleen als auteur van De Hollandse Spectator , waarin hij optrad als moreel en literair leidsman voor de opkomende burgerij. Maar over de persoon zelf achter al deze anonieme geschriften was tot dusver weinig of niets bekend. In deze biografie wordt daarom voor het eerst gepoogd om met behulg van archiefgegevens een totaalbeeld te geven van het leven en werk van Van Effen.
