This first volume of the new Brill series "Ancient Philosophy andamp; Religion" is a collection of articles by scholars of Classics, Ancient Philosophy, and Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity. The articles are based on papers presented at two colloquia on the interface between Ancient Philosophy and Religion at the universities of Aarhus and Cambridge. They focus extensively on Platonic philosophy and piety and sketch an emerging religio-philosophical discourse in ancient Judaism (both in the Sibylline Oracles and 4 Maccabees). Furthermore, this volume studies Seneca's religio-philosophical understanding of 'consolation', compares early depictions of Jesus with those of ancient philosophers, and, finally, reconsiders responses of pagan philosophers to Christianity from the second century to Late Antiquity.

The works of Plutarch, notably his Moralia , provide us with exceptional evidence to reconstruct the spiritual and intellectual atmosphere of the first centuries CE. As a priest of Apollo at Delphi, Plutarch was a first range witness of ancient religious experience; as a Middle Platonist, he was also actively involved in the developments of the philosophical school. Besides, he also provided a more detached point of view both regarding numerous religious practices and currents that were permeating the building of ancient pagan religion and the philosophical views of other schools. His combining the insider and the sensitive observer's perspectives make Plutarch a crucial starting point for the understanding of the religious and philosophical discourse of Late Antiquity.

Der Band ,,Bausteine zu einer Geschichte der Philosophie an der Universität Graz" enthält die Vorträge eines Symposiums, das aus Anlaß des 100-jährigen Bestandsjubiläums des Grazer Philosophischen Institutes im Herbst 1997 veranstaltet wurde. Außerdem finden sich darin Aufsätze und Studien veröffentlicht, die aus einem Projekt der Forschungsstelle für österreichische Philosophie hervorgegangen sind, welches einer eingehenderen Untersuchung der Geschichte der Philosophie an der Grazer Universität mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Jesuiten- und Lyzeumszeit gewidmet war; zur Vervollständigung des Gesamtbildes werden schließlich noch weitere, eigens für diesen Sammelband verfaßte Arbeiten über Grazer Philosophen präsentiert. Der frühen historischen Phase sind die ersten drei Beiträge des Bandes gewidmet, wobei in der ausführlichen Studie ,,Zur frühen Philosophielehre an der Grazer Jesuitenuniversität" erstmals der Versuch unternommen wird, die Inhalte des philosophischen Unterrichts, wie er am Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts im Rahmen der ,,ratio studiorum" angeboten wurde, am Beispiel eines vollständigen Kurses darzustellen. Die folgenden Aufsätze behandeln jeweils einzelne, an der Grazer Universität wirkende Lehrer oder befassen sich mit Problemen, die mit Ideen und Lehrmeinungen im Zusammenhang stehen, die von Grazer Philosophen vertreten bzw. angeregt wurden. In einigen Beiträgen werden zudem übergreifende Traditionslinien herausgearbeitet, die sich aus der von Alexius Meinong begründeten sog. ,,Grazer Schule" wie auch aus anderen Impulsen (besonders den von Alois Riehl und Hugo Spitzer ausgehenden) entwickelten. Die Reihe der hier vorgestellten Philosophen wird schließlich bis in die Gegenwart fortgeführt: So zeigen die Beiträge, in denen das philosophische Werk zweier prominenter Denker - nämlich Roderick M. Chisholms und Stephan Körners - gewürdigt wird, sowie die Selbstdarstellungen der Grazer Emeriti Ernst Topitsch und Rudolf Haller das breite und vielfältige Spektrum philosophischen Lehrens und Forschens an der Grazer Universität. The question of theological truth : philosophical and interreligious perspectives /

In today's world, the boundaries within which Christian theologians operate are becoming ever more permeable, and Christian theology is increasingly influenced and challenged by multiple "outside" factors. In Western Europe, two such factors stand out in particular: the so-called "turn to religion" in continental philosophy and religious diversity. Theologians working with contemporary continental philosophers and theologians engaging the multireligious world tend to work quite separately from one another. The aim of the present book is therefore to initiate a conversation between these two groups of theologians. The question of truth was chosen because it is both a key issue in contemporary-philosophical debates (in the continental and analytic traditions) and one that arises in complex and problematic ways in the praxis of, and theoretical reflection on, interreligious dialogue. Some of the pressing questions that are addressed by the contributors to this volume are: What is truth? What is theological truth? How does the issue of truth arise from interreligious encounter? To what extent can or should the nature of truth be discussed explicitly during interreligious dialogue? Or should the question of truth be rather postponed in the interest of successful interreligious encounter? Is there a hermeneutical concept of truth and, if so, how can it be of help for theological reflection on the question of truth and on the role and place of truth in the context of dialogue between religions?

Naturalized epistemology and philosophy of science /

Much has happened in the field of contemporary epistemology since Quine's "Epistemology Naturalized" was published in 1969. Even before Ronald Giere published his article "Philosophy of Science Naturalized," naturalized philosophy of science had been influenced by the so-called historical approach. Kuhm, Lakatos, Feyerabend and Laudan all contributed importantly to this trend. In this light it has emerged, without a doubt, that philosophy of science is closely related to epistemology. New perspectives on pragmatism and analytic philosophy /

The strong influence of pragmatism in the early 20th-century international debate, its subsequent and apparently inexorable decline, and its recent revival are intertwined with the fate of other currents of thought that have marked the development of contemporary philosophy. This volume clarifies the most recent events of this development focusing on key theoretical issues common both to American classic philosophical tradition and analytical thought. Many essays in this volume belong to what we can call "new" pragmatism, namely a pragmatist perspective that is different from the postmodernist "neo" pragmatism à la Rorty. The volume shows that both pragmatists and analytic thinkers stress the importance of logic and scientific method in order to deal with philosophical problems and seek for a clarification of the relation between our ethical values and our understanding of natural facts. Moreover, the anti-skeptic attitude that characterizes pragmatism as well as most part of analytic philosophy, and their common attention to the problems of language and communication are emphasized. The more sophisticated tools for addressing both theoretical and methodological problems developed by analytic philosophy are pointed out, and the essays show the possible integration of these two forms of speculation that, for too a long time, mutually disregarded one another.

Physics and philosophy of nature in Greek Neoplatonism : proceedings of the European Science...

Traditional scholarship has generally neglected the philosophy of nature in Greek Neoplatonism. In the last few decades, however, this attitude has changed radically. Natural philosophy has increasingly been regarded as a crucial aspect of late antique thought. Furthermore, several studies have outlined the impressive historical legacy of Neoplatonic physics. Building on this new interest, the ten papers published here concentrate on Neoplatonic philosophy of nature from Plotinus to Simplicius, and on its main conceptual features and its relation to the previous philosophical and scientific traditions. The papers were presented at a conference sponsored by the European Science Foundation in Castelvecchio Pascoli in June 2006. This volume makes an important contribution to the understanding of Greek Neoplatonism and its historical significance.

On Proclus and his influence in medieval philosophy /

Proclus (c. 410 - 485) was one of the major Greek philosophers of late Antiquity. In his metaphysics he developed and systematized fundamental problems of Plato's thought, such as participation; transcendence - immanence; causation - participation - return; henads and monads. In a theological way he interpreted some of Plato's dialogues. In the tradition of the neo-platonic school of Athens he tried to bring together Orpheus, Pythagoras and Plato. Before and after his works had been translated into Latin, Proclus influenced the Christian West through the Liber de causis (\'Book of Causes\'), a Latin translation of an anonymous Arab version of his Elementatio theologica . Among those who commented on the Liber or on some of its theses, were many well-known philosophers: Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Master Eckhart, Berthold of Moosberg and William of Ockham. The Liber de causis stimulated discussions about the concepts of God, first and second causality, universals, metaphysics of being as opposed to metaphysics of the one. In the volume various specialists discuss these problems: Saffrey, De Rijk, Meyer, Steel, De Libera, Aertsen, Beierwaltes and Bos.
