This volume on Apollonius of Rhodes, whose Argonautica is the sole full-length epic to survive from the Hellenistic period, comprises articles by eighteen leading scholars from Europe and America. It examines in a systematic fashion the two major factors which have been assumed to be responsible for the state of the transmitted text of Propertius: dislocation and interpolation. It also covers a large number of notorious cases of verbal corruption and discusses problems of the manuscript tradition on the basis of the most recent research. Beyond questions of textual criticism and history in the narrow sense the book provides also important exegetical remarks on many Propertian passages and deals in a separate chapter with problems of book and poem structure.

The Gorgon's Severed Head looks at three plays of Euripides, one early, one middle and one late in his career. Innovations in genre, in the use of the traditional stories, in the representation of women and of gender issues are present at every period. In all three plays characters are depicted creating themselves and each other. Chapter One on Alcestis looks at the artistry of the two main characters and is especially concerned with finding a role for Admetus, the play's most serious problem. The second chapter treats the physical displacement of the myth in Euripides' version of the Electra-Orestes story. A last section approaches the layers of time and space in Phoenissae .
