This is the first full-scale companion on Hesiod to appear in English. The twelve contributions included in this volume cover a wide range of aspects of Hesiodic poetry, such as the relation between Hesiod and the literary traditions of the Near East and the entire span of works comprising the Hesiodic corpus, from the Theogony and the Works and Days to the Melampodia and the Aigimios. They also explore the language, style, poetics, and narrative art of Hesiod, as well as his influence on Hellenistic and Roman poetry, but also his reception by the ancient biographical traditions and scholia. The narrative voice in the Theogony of Hesiod /

This volume offers analysis of the narratological structure of the Theogony with the purpose of elucidating a major, unifying theme in this poem: the relationship between the divine and mortal realms. The techniques of narratology are herein employed to support the argument that Hesiod portrays the cosmos as sharply divided between gods and men. The Theogony should therefore be read as a didactic poem explaining primarily the position of man vis-à-vis the gods. The first half of this book discusses relevant scholarship and introduces the theme of relationship of gods to men in the Theogony . The second half of the book discusses how Hesiod employs Character-Text, Attributive Discourse, Embedded Focalization, Anachrony, and Commentary to achieve his didactic purposes.

A commentary on Hesiod : Works and days, vv. l-382 /

This is a word-for-word commentary on the first part (vv. 1-382) of Hesiod's Works and Days . Special attention has been paid to peculiarities of grammar and idiom, but also to figures of style and the poet's train of thought. All interpretations - many of them which are new - are documented as fully, but at the same time as concisely, as possible. This documentation, which will prove useful for the interpretation of many other texts, has been made more easily accesible by detailed indexes. Discussion of other views plays a considerable part in the commentary and will help the reader avoid a great number of minor and major misunderstandings. The commentary has been confined to the first part of the poem because this seemed to be more in need of a thorough explanation than the rest. It is also the most interesting part in so far as it forms a kind of manual of social morality. The basis concepts of this doctrine are carefully defined in the commentary, and their historical implications are briefly indicated.
