Commerce, Culture, and Community in a Red Sea Port in the Thirteenth Century : The Arabic Documents from Quseir /

: This book is the first comprehensive study of the Arabic documents uncovered in Quseir, Upper Egypt, during the 1980s. The hundreds of paper fragments shed light on activities and operations of a family shipping business on the Red Sea shore in the thirteenth century. Part One is an introductory essay on historical and cultural context of these documents. The three chapters deal with, respectively, the "Sheikh's house," where the documents were found, the Red Sea commerce as reflected in the trade activities around the house, and aspects of popular culture as revealed through the texts. Part Two comprises a critical edition of eighty-four Arabic texts, the majority of which have never been published before, with translation and commentary.

Makārim al-akhlāq : Sharḥ-i aḥwāl u zindagānī-yi Amīr ʿAlī Shīr Navāʾī /

: Ghiyāth al-Dīn Khwāndamīr (d. after 942/1535-6) is a Persian historian who worked for several Timurid rulers in Herat. After the capture of Herat by the Uzbeks in 912/1507 and their ousting by the Safavids in 916/1510, Khwāndamīr held no further public office there. In 927/1520 he went to Agra where he entered the service of the founder of the Mughal dynasty Bābūr (d. 937/1530) and, following the latter's death, his son Humāyūn (d. 963/1556). He died in India, where he was also laid to rest. Khwāndamīr is especially known for his Ḥabīb al-siyar , a universal history from the beginning of time until the reign of Shāh Ismāʿīl I (d. 930/1524). The present work, written at the beginning of his career, is a monument to the greatness of his first patron, the vizier Mīr ʿAlī Shīr Nawāʾī (d. 906/1501). Khwāndamīr's personal involvement in many of the events that it describes lends this work its special interest.

From al-Andalus to Khurasan : documents from the medieval Muslim world /

: As in many areas of pre-modern history, the study of medieval Islamic history has been critically hindered by the lack of available evidence. Unlike many parallel fields, however, the shortage of contemporary documentary evidence for medieval Islam has less to do with the survival of documents and archives as with their accessibility. A rich documentary legacy survives, but because of its inaccessibility and unfamiliarity to all but the most specialised scholars in the field, it has remained sadly underutilised. This volume contributes to the redressing of that problem. It collects papers given at the conference "Documents and the History of the Early Islamic Mediterranean World," including editions of unpublished documents and historical studies, which make use of documentary evidence from al-Andalus, Sicily, Egypt, the Arabian Peninsula, Syria and Khurasan. Fünfundzwanzig arabische Geschäftsdokumente aus dem Rotmeer-Hafen al-Quṣayr al-Qadīm (7./13. jh.) [p.quseirarab. ii] /

: The Quṣayr Documents, one of the few Arabic archives unearthed in situ, shed new light on a lonely 13th-century outpost on the Red Sea shore where Egyptian donkey caravans met with ships coming from the Ḥidjāz and South Arabia. This is the publication of another twenty-five business letters and process slips from al-Quṣayr al-Qadīm. These unspectacular but elucidative documents follow clear rules in phraseology and in layout, as is shown by a multitude of close parallels with Arabic papyri and papers and with Judeo-Arabic Geniza documents. The book includes a short introduction on how online search strategies can be used in dealing with Arabic mass sources. For more titles about Papyrology, please click here .

Tārīkh-i Āl-i Saljūq dar Ānāṭūlī /

: The Saljuqs were a Turco-Muslim dynasty which ruled over Persia and parts of Central Asia and the Middle East from the 11th through the 13th century. After the death of Malikshāh I in 485/1092, the Great Saljuq empire was dissolved among his quarreling descendants, leading to the emergence of a whole series of smaller Saljuq states in Central Asia, Persia, Asia Minor, Syria, and Iraq. In Asia Minor, the Saljuqs of Rūm established themselves definitely with the coming to power of Qilič Arslan I in Konya in 485/1092. The Rūm Saljuqs continued their reign with different degrees of success, unison, and independence from other powers until the beginning of the 14th century. The present present work, a Persian history of the Saljuqs with an emphasis on the Saljuqs of Rūm, was written in Konya, around 756/1355. Rich in information, it is only second to the Mukhtaṣar of Ibn Bībī's (d. after 1285) Saljūq-nāma.

Theophrastus of Eresus : sources for his life, writings, thought, and influence /

: These two volumes represent the first fruits of an international project to produce a new collection - text, translation and commentary - of the fragments and testimonia relating to Theophrastus (c. 370-288/5 B.C.), Aristotle's pupil and successor as head of the Lyceum. The need for a new collection was apparent: the standard collection, by Wimmer, is already 120 years old, whereas we now have far better texts of many of the ancient authors in which fragments and testimonia of Theophrastus occur. Whilst classicists have devoted the past hundred years to bringing into the light the work of the major post-Aristotelian schools, the contribution of Theophrastus has remained obscure. The second printing contains corrections to the first. This first stage of the project presents the texts, critical apparatus and English translation of the fragments and testimonia. It contains a long methodological introduction, an index of Theophrastean texts and concordances with other collections (Scheider, Wimmer and the several recent partial editions). The second stage of the project, which Brill will also publish will consist of 9 commentary volumes, planned at present as follows: 1. Life, Writings, various reports (M. Sollenberger, Mt. St. Mary's College) 2. Logic (P.M. Huby, Liverpool University) 3. Physics (R.W. Sharples, University College London) 4. Metaphysics, Theology, Mathematics, Psychology (P.M. Huby, Liverpool University) 5. Human Physiology, Living Creatures, Botany (R.W. Sharples, University of London) 6. Ethics, Religion (W.W. Fortenbaugh, Rutgers University) 7. Politics (J. Mirhady) 8. Rhetoric, Poetics (W.W. Fortenbaugh, Rutgers University) 9. Music, Miscellaneous Items and Index of proper names, subject index, selective index of Greek, Latin and Arabic terms (several authors/editors). Most of the nine commentary volumes will include significant discussion of Arabic texts, with contributions by Dimitri Gutas (Yale University) and Hans Daiber (Free University of Amsterdam). It is expected that the first commentary volume, volume 5, will appear in the course of 1993.
