Honores inauditi bietet erstmals eine systematische Untersuchung der Ehrenstatuen Siziliens. Vor dem Hintergrund der wechselvollen Geschichte der Insel werden die Ehrenstatuen von den ersten archäologischen Zeugnissen für Könige in der Mitte des 3. Jhs. v. Chr. über die Kaiserzeit bis zum Ende der Praxis in der Spätantike in den Blick genommen. Das archäologische und epigraphische Material weist auf eine deutliche Kontinuität hin, zeigt aber auch Veränderungen der Monumente, der Beteiligten, bei der Sprache der Inschriften und bei ihrer räumlichen Anordnung. Dieser Wandel wird in einen Kontext mit übergreifenden Entwicklungen, aber auch mit lokalen Faktoren wie Stadtgeschichte und überregionalen Handelsrouten gestellt. Honores inauditi offers the first comprehensive study of honorary statues and their spatial and social context in Sicily. Based on a catalogue of mostly unpublished material, the book traces honorary statues throughout their historical development, starting from the first archaeologically known honorary statues erected for kings in the mid-3rd c. BC until the practice's decline in Late antiquity. Although continuously used, various changes are detected throughout time: the monuments' material and size, their display, the language of the inscriptions and the actors involved. These changes are contextualized by overarching developments such as trade routes, as well as local urban factors.

The Jews in Late Ancient Rome focusses on the Jewish community in third and fourth century Rome, and in particular on how this community related to the larger non-Jewish world that surrounded it. The book's point of departure is a refutation of the disputable thesis that Roman Jews lived in complete isolation. The book examines Jewish archaeological remains and Jewish funerary inscriptions from Rome from various angles, and compares them with Pagan and early Christian material and epigraphical remains. In the last part the author concentrates on an enigmatic legal treatise entitled the Collatio , identifying its author and exploring the implications of this identification. This study proposes a new way in which the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in late antiquity can be studied.

In The Beginning of the World in Renaissance Jewish Thought , Brian Ogren offers a deep analysis of late fifteenth century Italian Jewish thought concerning the creation of the world and the beginning of time. Ogren's book is the very first to seriously juxtapose the thought of the great Jewish thinker Yohanan Alemanno, Alemanno's famed Christian interlocutor, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, the important Iberian exegete active in Italy, Isaac Abravanel, and Abravanel's renowned philosopher son Judah, known as Leone Ebreo. By bringing these thinkers together, this book presents a new understanding of early modern uses of Jewish texts and hermeneutics. Ogren successfully demonstrates that the syntheses of philosophy and Kabbalah carried out by these four intellectuals in their quests to understand the beginning itself marked a new beginning in Western thought, characterized by simultaneous continuity and rupture.

This volume is the result of a conference, held at Manchester in July 2010, on processes of integration and identity formation in the Roman Republic. This book focuses especially on day-to-day contexts in which Romans and Italians interacted, which are essential for understanding long-term developments. The book discusses settlement patterns (e.g. Roman colonies), the Roman army, and the administration of Italy, as well as the long-term consequences of contact, such as growing social and economic networks, linguistic, religious, and cultural changes, transformations of identity in Rome and Italy, and demands for Roman citizenship by Italians. It combines new archaeological evidence with literary and epigraphic evidence, and thus gives an overview of current research on integration and identity in the Roman Republic.

Gomperz's essays, reprinted for the first time, are collected here in a photomechanical reprint and furnished with a new pagination. To respect the historical character of the collection no updating of the articles has been attempted. An Index of the Herculanean Papyri and a Concordance complete the book. Der Gedanke, eine Auswahl der Herculanensia minora von Theodor Gomperz, wenn auch als fotomechanischen Nachdruck, wieder vorzulegen, enstand sowohl aus dem Wunsch, diese Publikationen wieder zugänglich zu machen, als auch besonders aus dem Willen, bei dieser Gelegenheit dem Gelehrten, der sich ununterbrochen Zeit seines Lebens mit schöpferischem und unermündlichem Eifer den herkulanensichen Papyri gewidmet hat, die gebührende Anerkennung zukommen zu lassen. Unter den vielen herkulanischen Schriften von Gomperz wurde eine notwendige Auswahl vorgenommen. Um den historischen Charakter der Beiträge zu wahren, wurden Aktualisierungen vermieden, allerdings ein Index der herkulanischen Papyri hinzugefügt.
