The furniture from Tumulus MM /

: The Furniture from Tumulus MM , The Gordion Wooden Objects, volume 1, is a study of the furniture from the largest tomb at Gordion, Turkey, excavated in 1957 by the University of Pennsylvania Museum. The tomb dates to the eighth century BC and is thought to be the burial of the great Phrygian king Midas or his father. The objects, initially misunderstood, are now identified as nine tables, two serving stands, two stools, a chair, and an open log coffin. Three pieces are ornately carved and inlaid with religious symbols and complex geometric motifs. The wooden objects from Gordion are now recognized as the most important collection of well preserved wooden artifacts excavated from the Near East. Included in this volume are new photographs, reconstruction drawings, and eight scientific/technical appendices. Contributors include: Harry Alden, Burhan Aytuğ, Mary W. Ballard, Robert A. Blanchette, Roland Cunningham, Laure Dussubieux, Patrick E. McGovern, Benjamin Held, Walter Hopwood, Joseph Koles, Lynn E. Roller, Krysia Spirydowicz. \'...this work goes well beyond a typical site-specific object catalogue and makes important contributions to a wide range of scholarly fields, both technical and conceptual, from textile and wood analysis to anthropological and religious studies.\' Elizabeth P. Baughan, University of Richmond "The book succeeds in its main aims of making available every scrap of information about the finds, and it illuminates form, techniques, and function in a most convincing and stimulating manner." Catherine M. Draycott, Courtauld Institute of Art

Political Opposition in the Early Turkish Republic : The Progressive Republican Party 1924-1925 /

: The founding of the Progressive Republican Party in November 1924 marked the end of a power struggle within the Turkish nationalist movement. This struggle had been going on ever since the start of that movement in 1919 and had become acute after the establishment of the Turkish Republic in October 1923. The suppression of the party in 1925 marked the beginning of the period of one-party dictatorship which lasted until after the Second World War. This book describes the power struggles within the nationalist movement which gave birth to the party, its history, organization, power base, and ideological significance. A large number of important political documents from the period are presented in translation.

The Sultan of Vezirs : The Life and Times of the Ottoman Grand Vezir Mahmud Pasha Angeloviů (1453-1474) /

: Mahmud Pasha Angelovic served as Grand Vezir under Sultan Mehmed II, in the years following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, which were marked by an extensive imperial project, transforming the Ottoman principality into an empire. This book attempts to piece together the available evidence on Mahmud Pasha's Byzantine descent and family network, as well as his multi-faceted contribution to the founding of the new empire, through military leadership, diplomatic practices and architectural and literary patronage, considering also his execution and the creation of a posthumous legend presenting him as a martyr. Using Ottoman, Greek and Western sources, as well as archival material, this study focuses on the period of transition from Byzantine to Ottoman Empire and would be of interest to historians and other specialists studying that period.

Sinope :the results of fifteen years of research /
