: The summer was a hot and somnolent one in Egypt this year, and as usual, during the hot season, most archaeological activities ceased. An exception was made for the removal of three temples in the northern stretch of Lower Nubia, where the high water of the Aswan reservoir covers the monuments for the greater part of the year, only receding in the very hottest months of the summer. This year, in the baking heat that afflicts Upper Egypt and Nubia in the summer, engineers and work gangs of the Antiquities Department laboured for two months to dismantle and remove the small temples at Debud, Tafa, and Qertassi. These are all built-in masonry and are small enough so that the blocks can be numbered as removed, to be loaded on barges, and carried away for re-erection outside the zone to be flooded by the High Dam's reservoir. The work was done in good time, despite the torrid heat, and represents the first real step in the salvage problem with which the world's Egyptologists are so concerned.

: The following item has been contributed by Dr. William K. Simpson, Research Associate of the Center in Cairo: "A publication of great interest has recently appeared. It is entitled Report on the Monuments of Nubia Likely to be submerged by Sudd-el-Ali Water, published by the Government Press, Cairo, 1955, for the Antiquities Department of the Ministry of Education. After a preface by the Director-General of the Antiquities Department, Professor Mustafa Amer, there follows a letter addressed to the Minister of Education by Dr. Selim Hassan. In the letter he mentions the great need for a project to save the monuments, and that the assistance of foreign colleagues and UNESCO would be gratefully accepted. The committee, which visited Nubia in December, 1954, and January, 1955, consisted of Dr. Selim Hassan (president), Dr. Ahmed Fakhry, Labib Habachi, architect Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim, and architect Mustafa Sobhi Mohammed. The results of their survey and their recommendations, together with cost estimates, are the subjects of the report. An account of previous scientific work is given before their description of the sites.

Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern palaces. $n Volume II : Proceedings of a workshop held at the 10th ICAANE in Vienna, 25 -26 April 2016

: The study of the semiotics of palaces in the Ancient Near East and Ancient Egypt provides the historian with diverse information as size and type of architecture demonstrate the kind of representation chosen by rulers towards their world. Some features were adopted from temples in order to stage the appearance of the ruler like a divine epiphany. Some further integrate a temple within the palace, showcasing the desire of the ruler to live with a specific deity under one roof for divine support and protection. The importance of this ruler can also be reflected by the size of the throne room and the number of columns, showing as well a hierarchy in the use of space within the whole building complex and its different units. For instance, the presence of a rather intimate throne room or a second small throne room points to space for confidential exchange between the ruler and his visitors. The capacity of storerooms additionally gives us insight into the economic power standing behind the palace. The comparison of different elements between palatial and domestic architecture also proves helpful in identifying the origins of particular components.0Exploration of such semiotics was initiated with the publication of the first palace volume in 2018 (Verlag der ÖAW, Vienna) following a conference held in London 2013. The present volume stands in direct continuation and is the result of a second palace conference that took place at the 10th ICAANE 2016 in Vienna. Besides introducing other palaces in Egypt and Nubia, this volume is dedicated primarily to Near Eastern palaces which are presented and studied by prominent experts in this field

: The response to the suggestion that brief papers be presented by members at the Annual Meeting on November 15, 1961, has been most gratifying. More papers have been offered than the time at our disposal can accommodate, and the Executive Committee has been obliged, regretfully, to exclude certain papers of great interest, to be read by title and later published in the News-letter, if those offering the contributions will agree. A number of members üho have not wished to present papers have signified their enthusiastic approval of this new departure by promising attendance at the meeting. In response to many requests, a large part of the afternoon session will be devoted to Nubia and its salvage problems.

: REPORT ON THE WORK AT ABU SIMBEL carried on by the ’’Centre de Documentation et d’Etudes sur 1'Histoire de 1'Art et de la Civilisation de 1’ancienne Egypte" This item has been contributed by Dr. Charles F. Nims, Epigraphic Survey, Oriental Institute, University of Chicago, Luxor The first week after arrival at Abu Simbel was occupied by the work of organization and the photogrammetric survey. The latter was undertaken by a team of three French scholars, assisted by Drs. Mahmoud Tolba and Hasan Mostafa of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Cairo. In charge was Professor Poiuilliers, Directeur de 1'Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, a pioneer in all the applications of aerial survey. He served as chief of aerial observation for the AEF in 1916-1918. The first to apply the principles of aerial mapping to the study of architecture, it was his survey which was the basis of the photogrammetric section of the Report on the Monuments of Nubia (unfortunately without the mention of his name). By combining surveying and stereo (3-D) photography, he has been able to make very accurate measurements of buildings in the least possible time. From the results of the work'at Abu Simbel a model of the temple and an architectural study are now being prepared in Paris.
