Spatial 'Christianisation' in context : strategic intramural building in Rome from the 4th-7th C. AD /

: This text closely examines the location of the earliest purpose-built Christian buildings inside the city of Rome in their contemporary context. It argues that some of these were deliberately sited by their builders so as to utilise prominent positions within the urban landscape or to pragmatically reuse pre-existing bath facilities for Christian liturgical practice.

The traditio legis : anatomy of an image /

: The bearded and mature figure of Christ stands majestically raising his right hand, open palm facing the viewer. In his left he holds an unfurled scroll. Saints Peter and Paul appear on either side, Peter approaching to catch or protect the dangling bookroll. This image, the so-called traditio legis, first appeared in late fourthcentury Rome in a variety of media, from the monumental to the miniature, including mosaic, catacomb painting, gold-glass and, the most numerous group, marble relief carving on sarcophagi. This monograph engages in a close reading of the traditio legis, highlighting its novelty and complexity to early Christian viewers.

The Tekenu and Ancient Egyptian Funerary Ritual /

: What is the 'Tekenu'? What was its function? What are its origins? These are questions upon which Egyptologists have long pondered but have not, until now, produced any major work to provide answers. Previous treatments of the 'Tekenu' largely adopt a selective approach focusing on a specific form. Rarely has the 'Tekenu' been examined profoundly in all its forms or contexts and its possible origins have been commented upon merely in passing. The aim of this book is to provide a provocative examination and interpretation of the 'Tekenu' in an endeavour to proffer plausible answers hitherto eluding scholars. Attested from the Fifth Dynasty until, and including, the Saite Period, the 'Tekenu' is a puzzling icon which is depicted within the funerary scenes in the tombs of some ancient Egyptian nobles. In this work four distinct types of 'Tekenu' are identified and classified and then a Corpus Catalogue is formed. This book will be of interest to the serious student as well as to anyone fascinated by the hidden messages to be revealed in the funerary iconography of ancient Egyptian tombs.

The role of the lector in ancient Egyptian society /

: The lector is first attested during the 2nd Dynasty and is subsequently recognised throughout ancient Egypt history. In previous studies the lector is considered to be one of the categories of the ancient Egyptian priesthood. He is perceived to be responsible for the correct performance of rites, to recite invocations during temple and state ritual, and to carry out recitations and perform ritual actions during private apotropaic magic and funerary rites. Previous treatments of the lector have rarely considered the full extent of his activities, either focusing on specific aspects of his work or making general comments about his role. This present study challenges this selective approach and explores his diverse functions in a wide ranging review of the relevant evidence.

Maritime-related cults in the coastal cities of Philistia during the Roman period : legacy and change /

: This title questions the origins and the traditions of the cultic rites practised during Roman times along the southern shores of the Land of Israel. This area was known since biblical times as 'Peleshet' (Philistia), after the name of one of the Sea Peoples that had settled there at the beginning of the Iron Age. Philistia's important cities Jaffa, Ashkelon, Gaza and Rafiah were culturally and religiously integrated into the Graeco-Roman world. At the same time, each city developed its own original and unique group of myths and cults that had their roots in earlier periods. Their emergence and formation were influenced by environmental conditions as well as by ethno-social structures and political circumstances. Philistia's port cities served as crossroads for the routes connecting the main centres of culture and commerce in ancient times.

The hippos of Troy : why Homer never talked about a horse /

: This title addresses perhaps the most famous episode in Classical mythology: the Wooden Horse of Troy. The triumph of Dionysos : convivial processions, from antiquity to the present day /

: Dionysos carried the blessing of wine to the whole world, and his triumphant return from India became a popular subject for the arts of Greece and Rome in many media. It became associated with Alexander the Great's comparable victories and later served as a message of immortality for any mortal prince. The iconography survived the ancient world into Renaissance and neo-Classical arts, and may even have contributed to the practices of modern circus parades with their wild animals, maenad-snake-charmers and clown-satyrs: an unusual, indeed unique, survival.
