From vines to wines in classical Rome : a handbook of viticulture and oenology in Rome and the Roman West /

: David L. Thurmond's From Vines to Wines in Classical Rome is the first general handbook on winemaking in Rome in over 100 years. In this work, Thurmond surveys the biology of the vine, the protohistory, history, viticulture, winemaking, distribution and modes of consumption of wine in classical Rome. He uses a close reading of the relevant Latin texts along with a careful survey of relevant archaeology and comparative practices from modern viticulture and oenology to elucidate this essential element of Roman culture.

The Jewish community of Rome : from the second century B.C. to the third century C.E. /

: This volume deals with the development of the Jewish community of Rome in the late Republican and Imperial periods. It uses both literary and archaeological evidence, but attaches a great importance to the epigraphic source. The first section studies the structure of the community, in comparison with patterns attested both in Diaspora and in Eretz-Israel. The second section examines the historical development of the Jewish presence in Rome, and the third section deals with the structure of the catacombs and studies some interpretative problems presented by inscriptions. Through this material the book tries to find the links between this community and Mediterranean Judaism.

From cave to dolmen : ritual and symbolic aspects in the prehistory between Sciacca, Sicily and the central Mediterranean /

: This text brings together the scientific contributions of a wide panel of Sicilian and mainland Italian specialists in prehistory. Taking inspiration from a conference organised by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Culturali e Ambientali of Agrigento and by the municipal council of Sciacca in November 2011, the decision was taken to broaden and deepen some of the main themes discussed on that occasion. Therefore this book focuses on the Sciacca region and its landscape which is extraordinarily rich in natural geological phenomena and associated archaeological activity, for example the Grotta del Kronio and the numerous dolmens present nearby.
