Experiencing Etruscan pots : ceramics, bodies and images in Etruria /

: In a world without plastics, ceramics, alongside organic containers, were used for almost every substance which required protection or containment: from perfume to porridge. The experience of an Etruscan person, living day to day, would have been filled with interactions with ceramics, making them objects which can recall intimate transactions in the past to the archaeologist in the present. Characterising that experience of Etruscan pottery is the concern of this book. What was it like to use and live with Etruscan pottery? How was the interaction between an Etruscan pot structured and constituted? How can that experience be related back to bigger questions about the organisation of Etruscan society, its increasingly urban nature and relationship with other Mediterranean cultures?

Kom al-Ahmer — Kom Wasit II: Coin Finds 2012-2016: Late Roman and Early Islamic Pottery from Kom al-Ahmer

: and Kom Wasit, to investigate them intensively and reveal their importance. Kom al-Ahmer and Kom Wasit are located 6 km west of the Rosetta branch of the Nile, 35 km south of Rosetta, 40 km southeast of the port of Thonis-Heracleion, and 52 km southeast of the port of Alexandria (Figures i–ii). Given their well-connected location with respect to these Mediterranean and Nile ports, it can be assumed that a significant volume of commercial traffic moved through these sites. Historical sources and Hellenistic and Roman geographers located the capital of the Metelite nome in this region, and our research has made it possible to identify the likely location of the nome capital, Metelis, at Kom al-Ahmer, at least during the Roman, Late Roman, and Early Arab periods. This short introduction discusses the results of the study of two cultural materials finds, coins and pottery that brought to light massive information that can be gathered from a Delta site.

Greek Pottery from the Iberian Peninsula : Archaic and Classical Periods /

: Excavations on the Iberian Peninsula yield more and more Archaic and Classical Greek material every year. This is the first book to be published in English that discusses Archaic and Classical Greek pottery found in that area. The volume provides elaborate and up-to-date information. The first chapter (by A. Domínguez) is dedicated to Archaic pottery and covers the whole Peninsula; the second (by C. Sánchez) covers the Classical period, mainly based on the study of Attic pottery from Eastern Andalusia. Both chapters contain a catalogue with many illustrations. Not just finds are listed, but distribution and shape studies are included, as well as a discussion of how the local Iberian population viewed Attic painted pottery. The final chapter gives a general overview of trade, based upon the information presented in the previous chapters.

Persian pottery in the first global age : the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries /

: Persian Pottery in the First Global Age: the Sixteenth and Seventeeth Centuries studies the ceramic industry of Iran in the Safavid period (1501-1732) and the impact which the influx of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, heightened by the activities of the English and Dutch East Indies Companies after c. 1700, had on local production. The multidisciplinary approach of the authors (Lisa Golombek, Robert B. Mason, Patricia Proctor, Eileen Reilly) leads to a reconstruction of the narrative about Safavid pottery and revises commonly accepted notions. The book includes easily accessible reference charts to assist in dating and provenancing Safavid pottery on the basis of diagnostic motifs, potters' marks, petrofabrics, shapes, and Chinese models.

Pottery from the University of California, Berkeley excavations in the area of the Maški Gate (MG22), Nineveh, 1989-1990 /

: This work presents the pottery from the UC Berkeley excavations in 1989 and 1990. Nineveh is one of the longest occupied cities in the world, with a record of habitation extending back to at least the middle of the 7th millennium BC, continuing in an almost uninterrupted sequence through today. It was one of the major urban centres in which the fundamental features of modern civilisation first emerged. Its political and religious significance - particularly during its apogee as the capital of the Assyrian Empire in the late 8th and 7th centuries BC - secured its status as a legendary metropolis in history and literature.
