Erziehung ohne Streit ist kaum vorstellbar und das ist - so die überraschende These des Autors - kein Ärgernis. Im Gegenteil: Erziehung kann nur demokratisch sein, wenn Konflikte in der und über Erziehung akzeptiert, im Vertrauen auf eine gewaltarme Austragung riskiert und im öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Gespräch reflektiert und repräsentiert werden. Im Buch wird diese Einsicht in den Schriften der erziehungstheoretischen "Klassiker" Friedrich Schleiermacher und Klaus Mollenhauer aufgespürt. In einer kritischen Lektüre von Hannah Arendts agonalem Politikbegriff bringt der Autor moderne Erziehungstheorien und gegenwärtige Theorien radikaler Demokratie ins Gespräch. Erkennbar wird so, dass moderne Erziehungstheorien über einen demokratietheoretischen Sinn verfügen und Demokratie ohne ihre Erneuerung im Streitgeschehen der Erziehung nicht denkbar ist. Ziel demokratischen Erziehens ist nicht Harmonie, sondern das Eingehen, Ertragen und Erfahren demokratischer Auseinandersetzungen.

It is largely thanks to Zvi Yavetz that the Roman plebs has become "Salonfähig". In numerous important studies Yavetz has focused his - and our - attention on the problem of the relationship between the ruler and the masses of the ruled. Thus, it seemed natural to choose various aspects of this relationship as the topic of a volume in his honour. The articles here contributed by thirteen eminent friends and colleagues deal with historical and theoretical questions of the relationship between "the one" and "the many", covering a period from the second century B.C., through the times of the Late Republic and the Principate, to Late Antiquity and, finally, to an intriguing view at modern totalitarianism as perceived from an Enlightenment perspective.

Die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit engages with the topical question of the political role of the Roman plebs in the imperial period and seeks to reconstruct how it may have looked in practice and how it can be defined. Detailed source criticism of Tacitus, Suetonius, Dio Cassius, and others demonstrates that the passages thematizing citizens are primarily narrative in function. This approach further sharpens our understanding of the plebs' actual historical actions both regarding their causes, forms, and extent, as well as their attitude towards the emperors. This reappraisal allows for new insights and corrects numerous prior assessments, especially with regard to the function assigned the plebs as part of the so-called 'system of acceptance'. Die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit befasst sich mit der vieldiskutierten Frage, wie die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit ausgesehen haben mag und wie sie definiert werden kann. Die Autorin kann anhand intensiver Quellenkritik, insbesondere der Werke des Tacitus, Sueton und Cassius Dio, einerseits zeigen, dass die Passagen zum Volk in erster Linie eine narrative Funktion erfüllen. Andererseits ermöglicht genau dieser Zugang, die Kenntnisse über die historischen Aktivitäten zu schärfen: etwa hinsichtlich Auslösern, Formen oder Umfang, aber auch der Haltung der Plebs gegenüber den Principes. Dadurch werden neue Einblicke gewährt und etliche Positionen der bisherigen Forschung korrigiert. Als unhaltbar erweist sich insbesondere die Rolle, die der Plebs im sogenannten ,Akzeptanzsystem' zugesprochen wird.

Mostly German scholars and scholars working in Germany present original insights into a complex matter that although at the heart of international and intercultural relations is often treated in simplistic ways.

Political poetry across the centuries /

The volume dedicates itself to the rather neglected field of political poetry and offers a broad perspective across the centuries from Plato until the post-war period. The first part describes the social function of poetry in Plato, his reception in Heidegger and in Ezra Pound's poetry. A contribution on Milton complements this with a great poet`s reflection on central political questions. The second part, pre 20th century, is rounded off by two rulers from the edges of Europe or Asia who left their mark both on history and on the literary history of their country: the Georgian king Teimuraz I and the Persian ruler Shah Ismail. This theme is continued in the last contribution dedicated to an outstanding combination of political and poetic talent from recent history, Mao Zedong. Two other contributions refer to the epoch of WWI, Europe`s big cultural caesura, and they dedicate themselves to two eminently influential figures, Stefan George and Vladimir Mayakowsky.

\'Gegenstand dieses Buches ist die Analyse und Kritik der Moralphilosophie des Kommunitarismus, deren grundlegende Fragestellungen nach wie vor von hoher Aktualität sind. Führt das liberalistische Verständnis von Mensch und Gesellschaft zur Auflösung sozialer Bindungen? Benötigen wir eine Revitalisierung der Gemeinschaften mit ihren jeweiligen Werten? Muss das Ideal der Neutralität des Staates aufgegeben werden? Der Autor zeigt in umfassender Weise, dass einige Annahmen des Kommunitarismus durchaus plausibel sind, dass sich seine zentralen Thesen aber nicht aufrechterhalten lassen. Der Kommunitarismus unterschätzt die potentiellen Gefahren zu enger Gemeinschaftsbindungen. He then proceeds to discuss the far and near horizon of ethics as well as the relativistic consequences of a communitarian particularism based on the underlying assumption of incommensurability. In the last chapter, Stelzer provides his own account of a problem solving ethics by combining Karl Popper's fallibilism with the wide reflective equilibrium of John Rawls.

Zeno's Republic, a design of the ideal state consisting of gods and wise citizens, has been controversial since antiquity. The study looks at the controversial topics and tries to come to a new reading of the Republic as the vision of a society where life is lived according to natural law. The provocative call to promiscuity, incest and cannibalism can be explained within the frame of the cosmo-biological system, outlined by the founder of the school. This reading confirms that Stoic ethics with its central theory of oikeiosis is not concerned with the individual's self-discovery as with the cosmos' self-preservation. Attached is a collection of the fragments with German translations. Zenons Politeia, der Entwurf eines idealen Staates bestehend aus Göttern und Weisen, ist seit der Antike umstritten. Die vorliegende Studie behandelt nicht nur die kontrovers diskutierten Argumente, sie will auch zu einer neuen Deutung der Politeia als der Vision einer Gesellschaftsform führen, in der das Leben nach dem Gesetz der Natur verwirklicht ist. Die provokante Forderung nach Promiskuität, Inzest und Kannibalismus erfährt auf diese Weise eine Erklärung innerhalb des kosmo-biologischen Systems, das der Schulgründer geschaffen hat. Naturalism and Democracy , first published in German in 2014, presents a long-awaited commentary on Spinoza's Political Treatise (Tractatus politicus) . Its contents reflect a recent intensification in the interest in Spinoza's political philosophy in Germany. The volume addresses Spinoza's political philosophy according to its place within his philosophical system as a whole, beginning with his theory of the natural genesis of law and state. Following from this are commentaries on the foundations of political philosophy, the relation of natural and state law, the theory of sovereignty, and theory of international relations. These chapters lay the basis for four essays interpreting Spinoza's attempt to conceive of a systematic optimization of political and legal institutions for all three forms of governance (monarchy, aristocracy, democracy). The volume closes with an analysis of the current relevance of Spinoza's political thinking and his influence on contemporary debates.

East and West in the Roman Empire of the Fourth Century examines the (dis)unity of the Roman Empire in the fourth century from different angles, in order to offer a broad perspective on the topic and avoid an overvaluation of the political division of the empire in 395. After a methodological key-paper on the concepts of unity, the other contributors elaborate on these notions from various geo-political perspectives: the role of the army and taxation, geographical perspectives, the unity of the Church and the perception of the divisio regni of 364. Four case-studies follow, illuminating the role of concordia apostolorum , antique sports, eunuchs and the poet Prudentius on the late antique view of the Empire. Despite developments to the contrary, it appears that the Roman Empire remained (to be viewed as) a unity in all strata of society.
