Crises and the Roman Empire : proceedings of the Seventh Workshop of the international network Impact of Empire, Nijmegen, June 20-24, 2006 /

: This volume presents the proceedings of the seventh workshop of the international thematic network 'Impact of Empire', which concentrates on the history of the Roman Empire and brings together ancient historians, archaeologists, classicists and specialists on Roman law from some 30 European and North American universities. The seventh volume focuses on the impact that crises had on the development and functioning of the Roman Empire from the Republic to Late Imperial times. The following themes are treated: the role of crises in the empire as a whole; the relationship between crises and the Roman economy; modes in which crises influenced the presentation of emperors, and the impact of crises on and reception in (legal) writings.

Tradition and transformation : Egypt under Roman rule : proceedings of the international conference, Hildesheim, Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum, 3-6 July 2008 /

: In 30 BCE, Egypt became a province of the Roman empire. Alongside unbroken traditions-especially of the indigenous Egyptian population, but also among the Greek elite-major changes and slow processes of transformation can be observed. The multi-ethnical population was situated between new patterns of rule and traditional lifeways. This tension between change and permanence was investigated during the conference. The last decades have seen an increase in the interest in Roman Egypt with new research from different disciplines-Egyptology, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Epigraphy, and Papyrology-providing new insights into the written and archaeological sources, especially into settlement archaeology. Well-known scholars analysed the Egyptian temples, the structure and development of the administration beside archaeological, papyrological, art-historical and cult related questions.

The reliefs of the chapel of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep at Gebelein (CGT 7003/1-277) /

: In 1910 Ernesto Schiaparelli, along with the Italian Archaeological Mission on behalf of the Regio Museo di Antichità Egizie, excavated the area where, during the Eleventh Dynasty, King Nebhepetre Mentuhotep erected a chapel to the goddess Hathor at the site of Gebelein. Some of the blocks belonging to this chapel had already been moved to the Cairo Museum during the nineteenth century, and finds during Schiaparelli's campaign were taken to the Egyptian Museum at Turin. In this work, Elisa Fiore Marochetti presents documents from these two museums and gives an architectonic and decorative reconstitution of an unknown monument. The mostly unpublished blocks and fragments, presented here as the General Catalogue of the Turin Museum, follow a general introduction to the geographical, religious, and historical setting of Gebelein and of the chapel before Mentuhotep's reunification of the land. The dating of the chapel is formulated on the basis of the iconographical style of the reliefs and of the titulary borne by Mentuhotep. \'The publication therefore not only presents a valuable reference to the Egyptian antiquities housed in Turin's Egyptian Museum. It also presents a valuable addition to literature on Egyptian temple decoration and development, royal iconography, kingship and the course of events on the verge of the Middle Kingdom.\' Nico Staring, Macquarie University

The Vatican and Mussolini's Italy /

: Lucia Ceci reconstructs the relationship between the Catholic Church and Fascism. New sources from the Vatican Archives throw fresh light on individual aspects of this complex relationship: the accession of Mussolini to power, the war in Ethiopia, the racial laws, the comparison between Pius XI and Pius XII. This book offers a comprehensive reconstruction of this encounter, explaining the criteria that led Catholics to support a dictatorial, warmongering and racist regime. In contrast to the traditional periodization, the history begins with the childhood of Mussolini in the final years of the nineteenth century, and ends with the sudden collapse of his puppet regime, in 1945. This means to some extent placing in a different light the exceptional nature of the ventennio. The Italian original L'interesse superiore, Il Vaticano e l'Italia di Mussolini has won the "Friuli Storia" Prize for Studies of Contemporary History.

Greek Identity in the Western Mediterranean : Papers in Honour of Brian Shefton /

: The Greek colonies of the Western Mediterranean were central to the evolution of many aspects of Greek culture and in many cases developed an identity which was significantly different from that of mainland Greece and the Aegean. This volume seeks to explore aspects of the cultural identity of these colonies and how it evolved. It covers the colonial foundations in Italy, Sicily, Southern France, Spain and North Africa, and ranges from the 8th century BC to the early Roman empire. Topics covered include the ethnic identity of the earliest colonial foundations, the evolution of Greek states in the West, the Greeks' perceptions of their own identity and ways of representing it, and the role of the indigenous populations in the evolution of Western Greek culture.

Cassius Dio's forgotten history of early Rome : the "Roman history", Books 1-21 /

: In a radical change of approach, Cassius Dio's Forgotten History of Early Rome illuminates the least explored and understood part of Cassius Dio's enormous Roman History : the first two decads, which span over half a millennium of history and constitute a quarter of Dio's work. Combining literary and historiographical perspectives with source-criticism and textual analysis for the first time in the study of Dio's early books, this collection of chapters demonstrates the integral place of 'early Rome' within the text as a whole and Dio's distinctive approach to this semi-mythical period. By focussing on these hitherto neglected portions of the text, this volume seeks to further the ongoing reappraisal of one of Rome's most significant but traditionally under-appreciated historians.

Leaders and masses in the Roman world : studies in honor of Zvi Yavetz /

: It is largely thanks to Zvi Yavetz that the Roman plebs has become "Salonfähig". In numerous important studies Yavetz has focused his - and our - attention on the problem of the relationship between the ruler and the masses of the ruled. Thus, it seemed natural to choose various aspects of this relationship as the topic of a volume in his honour. The articles here contributed by thirteen eminent friends and colleagues deal with historical and theoretical questions of the relationship between "the one" and "the many", covering a period from the second century B.C., through the times of the Late Republic and the Principate, to Late Antiquity and, finally, to an intriguing view at modern totalitarianism as perceived from an Enlightenment perspective.

Spengler, U.von Wilamowitz), his university politics, his role in the First World War, his positions on Christianity and Judaism, history of philosophy, and particular research results and their effect.
