This volume provides the first critical edition of Boethius' De divisione . The importance of Boethius' treatise is twofold: it was widely read in the medieval schools, and it preserves the only known vestiges of Porphyry's commentary on Plato's Sophist and of Andronicus' treatise on diaeresis. The book is in four main sections: prolegomena in three parts, dealing with the date, source(s), and text of De divisione ; critical text with apparatus and English translation; detailed philological and philosophical commentary; appendix, bibliography, and word index. This is the first edition of De divisione based on the earliest extant manuscripts, and the first complete commentary in any modern language. It will be of particular interest to students of later ancient and medieval philosophy and literature.

In Platonici minores Marie-Luise Lakmann offers a collection of all philosophers considered to be "Middle Platonists" (1st century BC to AD 2nd century). The collection includes 85 "minor" Platonists, arranged in alphabetical order, little known figures seldom discussed in modern research. For each philosopher all known facts about life and teaching are presented with a bibliography. This is followed by a collection of fragments and testimonia relating to the Platonist. Each original text is accompanied by a German translation. An appendix includes a brief presentation of all "major" Platonists of this period. The volume provides a complete conspectus of an important period in the history of philosophy, bringing together many scattered materials and throwing new light on what is already known of the Middle Platonism.

Nearly a century before Descartes, Gómez Pereira published the Antoniana Margarita with the purpose of demonstrating the thesis of animal automatism, among many other things. The author included in his book several proofs of animal insensitivity and an original model aimed at explaining animal behaviour in the grounds of a purely mechanical system. In this sense, Pereira's work represents a critical appraisal of the traditional scholastic theory of the animal mind, as well as one of the first efforts to develop this question in the field of empirical observation and physio¬logical knowledge. It is precisely for this reason that Gómez Pereira must be recognized as one of the most valuable thinkers of the Spanish Renaissance. This book addresses the problems surrounding Cicero's Academici Libri , including why the work exists in two different editions, why and when the work became fragmentary, and how it managed to survive. It achieves this by tracing the history and influence of the work from Antiquity to the present day. The main part of the book studies the manuscript tradition of the work. All extant manuscripts are fully described and their textual relationships are established. Historical information is assessed in order to show the part which manuscripts played in intellectual life, conclusions are reached on the archetype of the work and a full stemma of the tradition is built. The book contains a wealth of bibliographical information and will serve as a base for further study in the transmission of Cicero's works.
