Cultural expression in the Old Kingdom Elite Tomb /

: 'Cultural Expression in the Old Kingdom Elite Tomb' considers the material and immaterial culture left behind by the ancient Egyptian elite in their tombs starting some 5000 years ago. The book intends to understand this culture reflecting the 'intention' of the ancient Egyptians. All these 'intentions' are now inaccessible to us, a paradox indeed. The author starts by examining the ways in which other Egyptologists have understood tomb culture over the past century.

The origins and use of the potter's wheel in ancient Egypt /

: The invention of the wheel is often highlighted as one of humankinds' most significant inventions. Wheels do not exist in nature, and so can be viewed entirely as a human-inspired invention. Machinery too, was relatively rare in the ancient world. The potter's wheel is arguably the most significant machine introduced into Egypt, second only perhaps to the drill, the loom and the bellows for smelting metal. This volume examines this topic.

: The theme of this study is the large-scale exploitation of different stone products that took place in Norway during the Viking age and the Middle Ages (c. AD 800-1500). The research is based on analyses of two different quarry landscapes in western Norway: the quernstone quarries in Hyllestad, Sogn og Fjordane, and the bakestone quarries in Olve and Hatlestrand, Hordaland. The centre of attention is the production of utility artefacts: quernstones, millstones and bakestones, as well as more symbolic products such as stone crosses.

Statio amoena : sostare e vivere lungo le strade Romane /

: New archaeological research and new studies on a rich and diverse body of extra-archaeological sources have recently reported the attention of the international scientific community on the subject of parking places, within the more general theme of the smaller settlements in the Roman world and their evolution in late antiquity and early medieval times. This volume brings together contributions from scholars from three different generations, starting from different sources and methodological approaches, converging towards the construction of an area of common reflection on a theme still relatively underdeveloped. The goal is to lay the foundation for a deepening of the interdisciplinary debate and to develop new research projects.

Digging up Jericho : past, present and future /

: Digging Up Jericho: Past Present and Future, arising from a conference exploring the heritage, archaeology and history of the Jericho Oasis, includes contributions by 21 internationally significant scholars. Once dubbed the 'Oldest City in the World', Jericho has been the focus of intense archaeological activity and media interest in the 150 years since its discovery. From early investigations in the 19th century, through Kathleen Kenyon's work at the site in the 1950s, to the recent Italian-Palestinian Expedition and Khirbat al-Mafjar Archaeological Project, Jericho and its surrounding landscape has always played a key role in our understanding of this fascinating region. Current efforts to get the site placed on the World Heritage List only enhance its appeal. Covering all aspects of work at the site, this volume offers the opportunity to re-evaluate and assess the legacy of this important site.
