The Handmaid's Tales in Gileadverse : Dynamics of a transmedia storyworld /

: In an innovative approach to the world-famous novelist Margaret Atwood and her oeuvre, this book traces the development of the transmedia universe built around Gilead, spanning over two novels, a serial, fan fiction, and social media. It offers a new perspective on 'The Handmaid's Tale' and - by extension - on the dynamics of world building that is difficult, if not altogether impossible, to analyze on the example of larger universes and media franchises. Each chapter offers insight into a different part of the Gilead universe, or a different point of entry, tracing character development, world expansion, the incongruities, and the intricate web of connections between particular elements. The loose threads are tied in 'The Testaments', which is both the grand finale and a springboard for new growth. This book will enable graduate students and scholars of transmedia or Atwood studies to discover new aspects of this storyworld, and to better understand other, larger and more complex ones.

An Unruly Classic: Kalīla and Dimna and Its Syriac, Arabic, and Early Persian Versions /

: In this collected volume, members of the KalÄ«la and Dimna project discuss, from different perspectives, a core aspect of their work with this textual tradition: the study of variation and mutability. The aim is to shed light on KalÄ«la and Dimna 's so-called mouvance and establish typologies of textual mobility and instability across linguistic traditions and historical periods, as well as to develop analytical tools to describe, classify, represent, and interpret these dynamics. As will be shown, the progressive digitalization of philology in the last decades has offered the unique opportunity of putting the concept of mouvance into practice. Contributors: Theodore S. Beers, Jan J. van Ginkel, Beatrice Gründler, Khouloud Khalfallah, Mahmoud Kozae, Rima Redwan, Johannes Stephan, Isabel Toral.

Adventure at Arms : On the Narrative Formation of Violence /

: Adventure fiction suggests that social conflicts can be displaced from the centre to the periphery of culture in order to be settled there by violent means. Its protagonists are endowed with extraordinary physical agency and a strange resilience to bodily and psychic wounds. This volume proposes a critical analysis of adventurous violence that foregrounds narratological issues as well as their socio-historical, political, and anthropological implications. Predicated on a broad diachronic perspective that challenges simple generalizations, the articles presented here cover a wide array of genres from ancient romance to the swashbuckling novel and a variety of contexts ranging from early modern state-building to colonialism, imperialism, and modern warfare.

The spectacular return of the repressed is one of the determinants of the particular rhythm of modernity. The machine also plays its part. When the desires and fears linked to the machine, abandoned, silent, hidden behind the veil of progress, emerge, they create a kind of phenomenology of the machine, which for many decades constituted a point of reference for literary and artistic activities. The machine is, so to speak, interiorised; inextricably linked to affects and desires, it becomes what I propose to call an intimate machine. This process is explored here through the works of Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes and others, including Roussel, Artaud and Didi-Huberman, as well as in contemporary erotic literature.

World Literature in and for Pandemic Times /

: Exploring the emotional and political ramifications of pandemics worldwide, the contributors to this collection treat material from wisdom literature and philosophy to historical fiction, poetry, graphic novels, and hypertexts, and they discuss works from Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, India, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Turkey, and the United States. Even now that the Covid-19 pandemic has been brought under some degree of control, the lessons-and the wounds-of this traumatic time will long be with us. As we prepare for the inevitable appearance of the next pandemic, world literature can help us create solidarity and collective connection in the years ahead.

Emotion and Calculation : Marriage Markets and Match Making from Early Modernity to the Present /

: Love and economics are usually considered to be opposites: While love is seen as an irrational, unexplainable and ungovernable feeling towards another person, economics is regarded as the art of egoistic, profit-oriented, rational calculations and actions. But are they, really? By examining a wide range of literary and historical sources throughout European modernity, the papers assembled in this volume investigate how the process of finding a partner or spouse interlaces love and economics. In their analysis of Early Modern marriage legislation, drama, Spanish novellas, Jane Austen's novels, films, dating apps and more, they reveal major cultural-historical changes in the notions of love and economics, and stress the role that concepts of gender, epistemic discourse, and media play in their interrelated history. Yet, despite their differing findings, they all show one thing: that "opposition" is far too simple a term to grasp the complicated relation of emotion and calculation.

Storytelling, Seafaring, and Travel Writing : The Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean /

: Storytelling, Seafaring, and Travel Writing advances research on Islamic travel writing, with a particular concentration on the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. Ranging from the late antiquity to the present, this collection explores how storytelling, travelogues, and seafaring narratives have contributed to cultural discourses and intellectual traditions. By examining Arab seafaring and travel from new angles and through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary lenses, these essays challenge conventional interpretation. Essential for scholars and researchers in Islamic studies, philosophy, literary analysis, and cultural history, it illustrates how real and imagined narratives have profoundly influenced cross-cultural exchanges and the construction of moral and cultural paradigms over time.

Anarchetypes : A Re-evaluation of Marginal Literary Forms and Genres /

: Why have literary works and corpuses - such as ancient Greek-Roman novels, Renaissance chivalric literature, early modern extraordinary voyages, classical French and English romances, or modern fantasy - been rejected from the canon of high literature? This volume aims at introducing the concept of anarchetype, in contrast to the concept of archetype, in order to define the "flawed design" of texts which, contrary to the Aristotelian tradition, have no closed structure or global organic meaning. This new-formalist approach will allow the re-evaluation of literary narrative and genres which have been judged by rhetors and theorists as marginal leftovers and failures devoid of aesthetic value. Contributors are: Maria Barbu, Carmen Borbély, Corin Braga, Ruxandra Cesereanu, Marius Conkan, Laura T. Ilea, Călina Părău, Radu Toderici, and Alex Văsieș.

World Literature as Geoculture /

: World Literature as Geoculture applies a geopolitical perspective to literature. It considers literature, along with all other cultural elements, as both formed by and constitutive of a region's, nation's, or continent's global position. The book opens with a chapter discussing the general relation between geopolitics and world literature. It then turns to more detailed discussions of the relations between nation and literature, European literature, comparative literature and translation, global south relations, the rise and fall of literary movements or currents as reflecting geopolitical shifts, and the position of small or minor literatures. Specific chapters focus on magical realism, Edward Said, Chinese comparative literature scholarship, and Flemish literature.

Littérature de voyage et autobiogéographie (XIXe-XXIe siècles) /

: This volume is the first to introduce autobiogeography as a new interpretative framework for reading travel writing from the nineteenth century to the present day. It explores a wide range of French (and Francophone), English, and Polish texts, and examines, in different ways, the intricate relationships between the traveller's autobiographical writing and geography - between self and space. Through this innovative perspective, the volume reveals the tensions and resonances that emerge between travellers and the spaces they inhabit, the transformations of the self in motion, the plurality of perspectives on a single place, and the forms of "autobiogeofiction" in which the encounter with space transcends lived experience to become creation.
