Euripidea Tertia is a companion volume to the Loeb Classical Library edition of Euripides. It discusses places in the text primarily of the late plays where the editor's choice of variants or adoption of conjectures required some explanation and also places where the translation needed explaining. The plays covered are Iphigenia Taurica, Ion, Helen, Phoenissae, Orestes, Bacchae, Iphigenia Aulidensis , and Rhesus , with addenda on earlier plays. Reviewers of the earlier volumes Euripidea and Euripidea Altera have commented on the cogency and sensitivity of his textual arguments. Serious students of Euripides, tragedy, textual criticism, and Greek metre will all want to read this book.

Shared storytelling in Euripidean stichomythia /

Long, stichomythic dialogues in the tragedies of Euripides are connected with some of the greatest problems of critical appreciation. The form is considered unnatural particularly when characters use stichomythia to tell stories to each other. In Shared Storytelling in Euripidean Stichomythia Liesbeth Schuren tries to rehabilitate Euripidean stichomythia, using pragmatic and narratological approaches. In the section devoted to pragmatic analysis, comparison between the turn-taking systems in Euripidean stichomythia and naturally occurring conversation establishes to what extent convention and realism are operative. Using narratological arguments, the traditional apparatus is expanded to suit the dialogic nature of narrative stichomythia. Analysis of narrative presentation in storytelling with two interlocutors results in a multi-faceted perspective, an effect unique to narrative stichomythia.

In Memories of an Impossible Future: Mehdi Akhavān Sāles and the Poetics of Time Marie Huber traces the quest for a modern language of poetry through different figurations of temporality in the works of one of Iran's foremost poets. Akhavān is placed in dialogue with European thinkers and emerges as an original voice in world literature. Chapters examine aspects of rhythm and metaphor, messianism and historicity, and functions of time in Akhavān's lyric and epic poems. Through a range of close readings Huber seeks to understand Akhavān's texts as crystallisations of a historical moment, both rooted in the Persian tradition and pointing beyond it. Her analyses combine attention to philological detail with meditations on the philosophical significance of Akhavān's poetics.

The Bellum Gallicum and the Shakespearean play are better known, but Caesar's partisan account of the Roman civil war culminating in the battle of Pharsalus offers a historical text of perennial interest and relevance. Two introductory chapters contextualize this book and offer a traditional narrative of political and military history for 49-48 BCE. There follow seven chapters that are dedicated to each of the geographical theatres of civil war. These chapters show how Caesar's testimony sheds important light upon the nature of Roman rule in the Mediterranean, but also explore the problems to be encountered in using potentially tendentious testimony.

And yet the genres developed together, were performed together, and influenced each other to the extent of becoming polar opposites. In Aristophanes and His Tragic Muse , Stephanie Nelson considers this opposition through an analysis of how the genres developed, by looking at the tragic and comic elements in satyr drama, and by contrasting specific Aristophanes plays with tragedies on similar themes, such as the individual, the polis, and the gods. The study reveals that tragedy's focus on necessity and a quest for meaning complements a neglected but critical element in Athenian comedy: its interest in freedom, and the ambivalence of its incompatible visions of reality.

Kazimierz Twardowski (1866-1938) is the founder of the Lvov-Warsaw School with its strong tradition in logic and its scientific approach to philosophy. Twardowski's unique way of doing philosophy, his method, is of central importance for understanding his impact as a teacher. This method can be understood as a philosophical grammar, which is also how Leibniz conceived his universal language of thought. Analytic philosophy in the twentieth century can be characterized by its opposition to psychologism, on the one hand, and its opposition to metaphysics, on the other. This is changing now, as questions within the philosophy of mind and metaphysics are raised by analytic philosophers today. Maria van der Schaar shows in her book that we can improve our analytic methods by making use of Twardowski's philosophical grammar. Twardowski's positive attitude to psychology and metaphysics may also help us to develop an analytic metaphysics and to get a better understanding of the relation between psychology and philosophy.

Nasrin Askari explores the medieval reception of Firdausī's Shāhnāma , or Book of Kings (completed in 1010 CE) as a mirror for princes. Through her examination of a wide range of medieval sources, Askari demonstrates that Firdausī's oeuvre was primarily understood as a book of wisdom and advice for kings and courtly elites. In order to illustrate the ways in which the Shāhnāma functions as a mirror for princes, Askari analyses the account about Ardashīr, the founder of the Sasanian dynasty, as an ideal king in the Shāhnāma . Within this context, she explains why the idea of the union of kingship and religion, a major topic in almost all medieval Persian mirrors for princes, has often been attributed to Ardashīr.
