This book suggests a new approach to the social history of Jewish religious movements in the Second Temple and early Rabbinic periods. It argues that most of these movements and their traditions emerged within the context of complex interaction between traditional families and disciple circles. The first part of the book examines the development of Jewish religious movements during the Second Temple period. It culminates with the discussion of the Dead Sea Sect, which is analyzed as the first unambiguous example of a movement shifting from a social structure based on families to a social structure based on disciple circles. The second part of the book discusses the history of pharisaic and early rabbinic movements from a similar perspective. Topics covered in the book will be of interest to scholars of Judaism and Early Christianity.

Dr. 'Abd al-Razzāq al-Sanhūrī (1895-1971) is one of the most prominent jurists to emerge to date in the Arab world. His alarm at the growing social gap in his country, Egypt, during the first half of the twentieth century, fueled his vision of establishing moral social order by means of a new civil code. Although Sanhūrī's chosen tool was the legal text, this book argues that his vision was essentially a social one: to introduce the principles of compassion, solidarity and fairness, alongside progress and pragmatism, into polarized Egyptian society, whereby property laws acquired a social function, the laws of partnership were perceived as having an educational value, and contract law was activated as a balance favoring the weaker members of society. Accordingly, this book examines the drafting of the Egyptian Civil Code, exposing the hitherto unknown sociological strata of this act of legislation.

The Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 A.D.) originated from the North-African town of Lepcis Magna. His reign is seen as a time in which profound changes within Roman society became evident resulting in many provincials achieving important positions in the Roman state. The book examines this development from the perspective of a possible use of the non-Italian home and deities of the Emperor within Imperial iconographics. Important evidence for that are the native deities propagated by the Emperor. The book further discusses the relationship of Severus towards Roman gods and a possible sacralisation of the Emperor which might suggest changing attitudes towards the Emperor. The latter however has to be critically assessed and asked who was responsible for certain images. Was it the Imperial house or were it other groups? Der römische Kaiser Septimius Severus (193-211 n. Chr.) stammte aus dem nordafrikanischen Lepcis Magna. Seine Regierung wird als eine Zeit des Umbruchs charakterisiert, geprägt von einer Veränderung der römischen Gesellschaft, in die nun immer mehr Provinzialen in führende Positionen kamen und eine Verschiebung des Zentrums weg von Rom erfolgte. In dem Buch wird dieser Entwicklung aus der Perspektive der möglichen Instrumentalisierung einer nicht-italischen Heimat des Kaisers in der kaiserlichen Repräsentation nachgegangen. Wichtigstes Zeugnis dafür sind heimatliche Götter, die vom Kaiserhaus propagiert wurden. Außerdem betrachtet das Buch die religionspolitischen Schwerpunktsetzungen des Kaisers und die auf seine Person bezogenen Sakralisierungstendenzen, die auf eine möglicherweise veränderte Auffassung des Kaisertums zurückschließen lassen, wobei insbesondere zu fragen ist, ob dies auf das Kaiserhaus oder andere Gruppen zurückzuführen ist.

Using archaeological and inscriptional data this book explores the social history of the rarely studied local temples from Dynasty 0 to 11 (ca. 3000-2000 BC). A major focus is placed on the investigation of the temple votives, especially those from Hierakonpolis and Abydos. They are one of the most complex sources for the history of the temples between the provincial milieu and the kings. The book shows how these temples develop from locally based institutions to royal ones and how this overall process was embedded in the local history of each site. By focusing mainly on Anatolia and the Muslim population, Mehmet Beşikçi argues that the conditions of mobilization pushed the Ottoman state to become more centralized, authoritarian and nationalist, but the increasing dependence on people paradoxically also enlarged their space of action vis-à-vis state authority. The book demonstrates that people's responses to the state's needs constituted a wide spectrum ranging from voluntary support to open resistance such as desertion. In turn, the state responded by revising its mobilization policies and reformulating new mechanisms of control at the local level.

Although continuously used, various changes are detected throughout time: the monuments' material and size, their display, the language of the inscriptions and the actors involved. Historical and Archaeological Aspects of Egyptian Funerary Culture , a thoroughly reworked translation of Les textes des sarcophages et la démocratie published in 2008, challenges the widespread idea that the "royal" Pyramid Texts of the Old Kingdom after a process of "democratisation" became, in the Middle Kingdom, accessible even to the average Egyptian in the form of the Coffin Texts. Rather they remained an element of elite funerary culture, and particularly so in the Upper Egyptian nomes. The author traces the emergence here of the so-called "nomarchs" and their survival in the Middle Kingdom. The site of Dayr al-Barshā, currently under excavation, shows how nomarch cemeteries could even develop into large-scale processional landscapes intended for the cult of the local ruler. This book also provides an updated list of the hundreds of (mostly unpublished) Middle Kingdom coffins and proposes a new reference system for these.

A 17th-century French haberdasher invented the Black Mass. An 18th-century English Cabinet Minister administered the Eucharist to a baboon. High-ranking Catholic authorities in the 19th century believed that Satan appeared in Masonic lodges in the shape of a crocodile and played the piano there. A well-known scientist from the 20th century established a cult of the Antichrist and exploded in a laboratory experiment. Three Italian girls in 2000 sacrificed a nun to the Devil. A Black Metal band honored Satan in Krakow, Poland, in 2004 by exhibiting on stage 120 decapitated sheep heads. Some of these stories, as absurd as they might sound, were real. Others, which might appear to be equally well reported, are false. But even false stories have generated real societal reactions. For the first time, Massimo Introvigne proposes a general social history of Satanism and anti-Satanism, from the French Court of Louis XIV to the Satanic scares of the late 20th century, satanic themes in Black Metal music, the Church of Satan, and beyond.
