Radical frame semantics and biblical Hebrew : exploring lexical semantics /

: Since James Barr's work in the 1960s, the challenge for Hebrew scholars has been to continue to apply the insights of linguistic semantics to the study of biblical Hebrew. This book begins by describing a range of approaches to semantic and grammatical analysis, including structural semantics, cognitive linguistics and cognitive metaphors, frame semantics, and William Croft's Radical Construction Grammar. It then seeks to integrate these, formulating a dynamic approach to lexical semantic analysis based on conceptual frames, using corpus annotation. The model is applied to biblical Hebrew in a detailed study of a family of words related to "exploring," "searching," and "seeking." The results demonstrate the value and potential of cognitive, frame-based approaches to biblical Hebrew lexicology.

A Comparative Lexical Study of Qur'ānic Arabic /

: This work does not aim to be an etymological dictionary of Qur'ānic Arabic, nor does it attempt to suggest some new genetic classification of the Semitic languages. Rather, it offers insights into the internal lexical relationships attested in a number of Semitic varieties. The work is based on a quantitative analysis of a substantial corpus of the Arabic lexicon with a view to investigating lexical relationships within a number of Semitic languages. Qur'ānic Arabic is the source of a lexical mass comparison exercise involving Akkadian, Ugaritic, Aramaic, Syriac, Hebrew, Phoenician, Epigraphic South Arabian and Ge'ez. Moreover, the lexical links identified in this study are in themselves linguistic indicators of the various degrees of cultural proximity characterising the various Semitic languages.

Pelagonius and Latin veterinary terminology in the Roman Empire /

: The language of Latin veterinary medicine has never been systematically studied. This book seeks to elucidate the pathological and anatomical terminology of Latin veterinary treatises, and the general linguistic features of Pelagonius as a technical writer. Veterinary practice in antiquity cannot be related directly to that of the modern world. In antiquity a man could claim expertise in horse medicine without ever passing an examination. Owners often treated their own animals. The distinction between 'professional' and layman was thus blurred, and equally the distinction between 'scientific' terminology and laymen's terminology was not as clear-cut as it is today. The first part of the book is devoted to some of the non-linguistic factors which influenced the terminology in which horse diseases and their treatment were described.

Nacktheit im Alten Ägypten : Episteme, Lexeme und (Re-)Konstruktionen /

: There is an overwhelming wealth of material on nudity and nakedness which has come down to us from Ancient Egypt. As a socio-cultural construct found in images and texts, the naked/nude body can be associated with negative, positive, and neutral connotations. Ancient Egyptian image-text-compositions can be used to study what was perceived as "naked" or "nude" and how the body was emically evaluated in certain situational contexts. Of special interest are also the epistemes surrounding the naked/nude body and how it was perceived and interpreted by researchers, whose conceptualizations of corporealities are sometimes biased. This monograph offers a comprehensive analysis of the representations and meanings of the naked/nude body in Pharaonic Egypt between the 5th and 30th Dynasties (c. 2300-350 BC). The focus is on a lexicological and lexicographical analysis of the conceptual field [nudity/nakedness]: Seven lexemes are analyzed in detail in order to grasp the semantic nuances and situational use of terms in the context of Ancient Egyptian texts. Taking into account a broad spectrum of text types, a solid foundation is laid for comparing statements about the naked/nude body found in texts with visual culture consisting of two- and three-dimensional pictorial representations. Alongside insights into the Ancient Egyptian lexicon, this study contributes to the cultural and social anthropology of Ancient Egypt, showing how nakedness/nudity was contextually and discursively constructed. The result is a nuanced view of nakedness/nudity as a culturally shaped concept, providing fresh insights into clothing and gender roles in Ancient Egypt.
