Das vorliegende Buch widmet sich den Lebensumständen und der Berufsethik der arabischen Ärzte des Mittelalters. Auf der Grundlage zahlreicher biographischer, protreptischer, deontologischer und isagogischer Schriften untersucht Bürgel verschiedenste Aspekte der medizinischen Ausbildung, der Berufsausübung und der Rolle von Ärzten in der islamischen Gesellschaft. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der Bewahrung und Weiterentwicklung der antiken griechischen Berufsethik. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Wechselbeziehungen zwischen wissenschaftlicher Medizin und islamischer Religion. The present book investigates conditions of life and professional ethics of the Arab physicians in the Middle Ages. Based on a multitude of biographical, protreptic, deontological, and isagogic texts, Bürgel analyzes diverse aspects of medical education, professional conduct, and the role of doctors in Islamicate societies. Special attention is given to the survival and further development of ancient Greek professional ethics. Another focus is on the interrelations between scientific medicine and Islamic religion.

Current questions on whether Hellenistic Egypt should be understood in terms of colonialism and imperialism, multicultural separatism, or integration and syncretism have never been closely studied in the context of healing. Yet illness affects and is affected by nutrition, disease and reproduction within larger questions of demography, agriculture and environment. It is crucial to every socio-economic group, all ages, and both sexes; perceptions and responses to illness are ubiquitous in all kinds of evidence, both Greek and Egyptian and from archaeology to literature. Examing all forms of healing within the specific socioeconomic and environmental constraints of the Ptolemies' Egypt, this book explores how linguistic, cultural and ethnic affiliations and interactions were expressed in the medical domain.

Martin Lister (1639-1712), who served as physician to Queen Anne, was a prominent Fellow of the Royal Society (F.R.S.), and he was made an honorary M.D. by Oxford in 1684.The first scientific arachnologist and conchologist, and a major benefactor of the Ashmolean Museum, he corresponded regularly on natural history and medicine with its first and second keepers, Robert Plot (1640-1696) and Edward Lhwyd (1660-1709). Lister's unpublished papers were among the largest of his donations to Oxford's fledgling museum of science. In the mid-nineteenth century, these collections passed from the Ashmolean to the Bodleian Library. They contain the bulk of his correspondence, though sizeable quantities of his outgoing letters are held elsewhere, chiefly in the Royal Society, the Natural History Museum and the British Library's collection of Sloane Manuscripts. This volume is a critical edition of this correspondence from 1678 to 1694, encompassing the years he established a medical practice in London and completed his major works on conchology.
