Aspekte des Menschseins im Alten Mesopotamien : eine Studie zu Person und Identitat im 2. und 1. Jt. volume Chr. /
:
Being the first monographic study of this kind in the field of Assyriology, this book comprises an investigation of Ancient Mesopotamian concepts of the human person. Concentrating on Akkadian cuneiform texts from the 2nd and 1st millennium BC, the author examines the characteristics and attributes attached to human beings and the notions of the person as a composite being through a semantic analysis of Akkadian terms for the body, body parts and aspects of the self, which can be termed \'souls\'. Through an examination of a wide range of textual sources and an interdisciplinary approach, this study shows that the Mesopotamian views of personhood share amazing similarities with those of the neighbouring ancient cultures, but often differ from our own. "...in short, as a piece of modern Assyriological scholarship it is very well done and a tribute to its author's capabilities and accomplishments." Benjamin R. Foster, Yale University

Care of the self : ancient problematizations of life and contemporary thought /
:
The studies included in the Care of the Self: Ancient Problematizations of Life and Contemporary Thought focus on different manifestations of "taking care of the self" present in ancient and contemporary thought. Each of these studies approaches the issue of taking care of the self from a different perspective: Part I by Vladislav Suvák focuses on Socrates' therapeutic education; Part II by Lívia Flachbartová centres on Diogenes' ascetic practices; and Part III by Pavol Sucharek concentrates on Henri Maldiney's existential phenomenology. Taking care of the self ( epimeleia heautou ) is not just one of a great many topics associated with ancient ethics. Echoing Michel Foucault, we could say that the care of the self applies to all problematizations of life.

Self-Identity and powerlessness.
:
In Self-Identity and Powerlessness , Alice Koubová proposes a conception of human existence that does not essentially depend on the definition of self-identity. The author shows that the philosophical stress on human identity fails to grasp essential aspects of human existence. By emphasizing the moments of Dasein's powerlessness in Heidegger's fundamental ontology, she develops - in her analysis of various philosophers, literary examples, and social psychology -an original phenomenology of alternation of existence and affair. How necessary is identity for thinking? Are we capable of philosophical thought even when we have neither ourselves, nor the world under our full control? Is it possible to relax, become powerless, and yet think precisely? These questions are to be answered in this book.

The Stain of Errors on the Self /
:
Using an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of the self, this study focuses on a gap left by previous philosophers. This shortcoming is related to the nature of the self to commit errors that become part of the identity of the self. These
