200 years ago, on September 8, 1814, in the northern French city of Bourbourg, a boy was born into a family of local entrepreneurs connected to the local political or judicial elite. The young Charles-Etienne Brasseur was lucky to spend days and days in the impressive library of Alexandre Nicolas Muchembled, the son of his godmother. The reading of exciting travel books there mapped out the course of his truly adventurous life to come. Although a rebellious schoolboy, he acquired a huge knowledge in many fields by his omnivorous reading of books and journals. He was also a very curious young man, delving into the private libraries of the local grand families, resulting in him contributing many historical articles to newspapers and learned societies. At the age of 24, while still in high school, he published his first novel. This text tells his story.

Témoignages de ses travaux, mais aussi de son regard attentif sur la vie quotidienne en Égypte, Étienne Drioton a laissé une importante collection de clichés réalisés entre 1924 et 1952, dont beaucoup sont encore inédits. Cet ouvrage vous propose de lui emboîter le pas au fil du Nil. Tout d'abord l'égyptologue nous entraîne vers les sites archéologiques de Haute Égypte : Médamoud et Tôd, où il travaille entre 1925 et 1936, puis Karnak, Louqsor et Deir el-Médineh. À côté de la réalisation d'une multitude de clichés de sites et de fouilles, il s'intéresse aussi à la réalité quotidienne des habitants de ces contrées. Il entre dans les villages, réalise des portraits de personnages typiques, rencontre les fellahs, fixe par l'image les travaux des champs. En juin 1936, alors qu'il est Directeur général du Service des antiquités au Caire, le pays se présente comme un vaste chantier. Ici on fouille, là on reconstitue un monument. En tenue civile ou coiffé du tarbouche officiel, il visite les sites, accompagnant parfois de hautes personnalités qui ont marqué l'histoire. Ce sont pour nous autant d'occasions de découvrir les vestiges de l'Égypte pharaonique tels qu'ils se présentaient en cette première moitié du XXe siècle. Voyage sur le Nil en compagnie du roi Farouk, reconstitution du complexe funéraire de Djeser à Saqqara, découvertes des tombes royales de Tanis, sont autant de points forts qui jalonnent cet album. Sa bibliographie, en annexe, rappelle qu'il était avant tout un chercheur, un immense savant dont les travaux novateurs ont fait avancer la science de l'égyptologie.

The way in which children were perceived, integrated, and raised within the family and the community established the very foundations of Egyptian society. Childhood in Ancient Egypt is the most comprehensive attempt yet published to reconstruct the everyday life of children from the Predynastic period to the end of the New Kingdom. Drawing on a vast wealth of textual, iconographic, and archaeological sources stretching over a period of 3,500 years, Amandine Marshall pieces together the portrait of a society in which children were ever-present in a multiplicity of situations. The ancient sources are primarily the expressions of male adults, who were little inclined to take an interest in the condition of the child, and the feelings of young Egyptians and all that touches on their emotional state can never be deduced from the sources. Nevertheless, by cross-referencing and comparing thousands of documents, Marshall has been able to explore how ancient Egyptians perceived children and childhood, and whether children had a particular status in the eyes of the law, society, and the Egyptian state. It is a consolidated tradition that the 'Proceedings of the International Congresses of Coptic Studies' include both papers organized thematically - according to sections and panels - and a larger group of general reportraits, provided with a rich bibliography, about new research trends and acquisitions in a particular field of Coptology: art, archaeology, literature, linguistics, monasticism, Gnosticism, magic, etc. 'The Proceedings of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies', in particular, contain the reportraits delivered during the Cairo Congress of 2008 (covering the period 2002-2008) and those pronounced during the Rome Congress of 2012 (covering the period 2008-2014), the latter characterized by two new reportraits: "Shenutean studies" and "Ethiopic studies in relation to Egyptian culture". Moreover, it is worth mentioning that for the first time some papers are organized in panels dedicated to very specific topics, in which current research is particularly alive, such as "Bawit: a monastic community, its structure and texts", "Thebes in Late Antiquity", or "The reconstruction and edition of Coptic Biblical Manuscripts".
