F. M van Helmont's Alphabet of Nature was one of many books published about language in the early modern period. The "language debate," as it has come to be called, was a topic of compelling interest to major figures such as Reuchlin, Rabelais, Paracelsus, Agrippa, Postel, Boehme, Kircher, Hobbes, Descartes, Comenius, Spinoza, Locke, Boyle, Newton, and Leibniz. At issue were profound questions about whether language is natural or artificial, ordained by God or created by man. The answers given entailed a web of consequences that could lead to arrest, imprisonment, even execution. It is therefore not surprising that van Helmont wrote his book while imprisoned in the dungeons of the Roman Inquisition.

Le Kitāb dā'irat al-aḥruf al-abjadiyya est un traité de magie pratique attribué à Hermès. Ce texte composite, qui ne peut être daté avec précision, est un ouvrage de magie basée sur la doctrine de la science des lettres ( 'ilm al-ḥurūf ). Le présent livre offre la première édition critique du texte, accompagnée d'une traduction annotée et d'une étude historique et philologique exposant les principes théoriques à la base des procédés décrits dans les recettes ainsi que des entités, objets et ingrédients utilisés (noms des anges invoqués, types de fumigations et d'encres, dessins et figures, et cetera). Il s'agit d'une des premières éditions critiques d'un traité de magie pratique des lettres, genre encore fort méconnu bien qu'abondamment représenté dans les manuscrits arabes. The Kitāb dā'irat al-aḥruf al-abjadiyya is a composite treatise of letter magic attributed to Hermes. The edition and annotated translation of the Arabic text are accompanied by an explanation of the theoretical principles underlying the procedures described in the recipes, and a discussion of the entities, objects and ingredients used. These include names of the angels to be summoned, types of incenses and inks to be used, sketches and images to be drawn, et cetera This is one of the first critical editions and translations of a full-length text of practical magic containing recipes pertaining to 'ilm al-ḥurūf (the science of letters). The book is addressed to Arabists and to any non-Arabist interested in the tradition of magic.

The art of the Hekatompedon inscription and the birth of the stoikhedon style /

The purpose of this book is to present the Hekatompedon Inscription at Athens ( IG I³ 4) as a major monument of Greek art, legitimately on a par with more famous landmarks of the Greek aesthetic tradition like the Parthenon Frieze. Inscribed most probably in the middle of the decade that saw the Greek response to the Persian invasion, the Hekatompedon Inscription has long been recognized for its historical and religious importance. This study looks at the inscription on its own terms: the unique fusion of its visual and textual content in that most Greek of epigraphical layouts, the stoikhedon style. Such an approach leads to the question of origins: where and why was the stoikhedon style formulated and where does the Hekatompedon Inscription stand in that development? Egypt's influential system of proportions and use of grids will be considered determinative for the very first time.
