The articles in Phenomenology and the Metaphysics of Sight explore the uses and resonances of the paradigm of sight across the phenomenological tradition, with particular reference to the works of Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty. The axes of this investigation are the phenomenological readings of the notion of sight in ancient Greek philosophy, the ways in which phenomenology leads us beyond the primacy of sight, and the rivalry between the paradigm of sight and those of touch and hearing. The aim of this collection is to demonstrate that the use of the paradigm of sight pervades phenomenology and partially explains both the development of its self-criticism and its view on the history of philosophy.

Die Differenzdiskurse, die heute legitimierend für Gesellschaft, Religion oder Philosophie in Anspruch genommen werden, stoßen sich an der prinzipiellen "Ungeteiltheit" solcher Erfahrungsmöglichkeit vor jeder besonderen Erkenntnis. Die radikal phänomenologische Wahrheit solcher Einheit erarbeiten wir daher mit Meister Eckhart als "Ab-Grund" des Absoluten sowie in Übereinstimmung mit der Lebensphänomenologie Michel Henrys als rein immanente "Praxis". Dieses philosophisch-mystische "Gespräch" mit Meister Eckhart versucht aber nicht nur, im anfangslosen Leben und der durch keine weitere Bestimmung verstandenen "Gottheit" eine strukturelle Übereinstimmung aufzuweisen, sondern daraus zugleich eine notwendige Kulturerneuerung zu gewinnen. Insofar as phenomenology continues to offer, by virtue of its self-understanding, the best technique provided for philosophical analysis of experience, phenomenology is obligated to respond to the category of mysticism. It is especially with Michel Henry and Meister Eckhart that we see phenomenology and mysticism coincide. They both put into play a radical reduction as a unity of reflection/praxis, which exposes to view how the self-appearance and the self-enactment of life come together in their respective self-affections or "trials of experience."

Selfhood and appearing : the intertwining /

What is the relation between our selfhood and appearing? Our embodiment positions us in the world, situating us as an object among its visible objects. Yet, by opening and shutting our eyes, we can make the visible world appear and disappear-a fact that convinces us that the world is in us. Thus, we have to assert with Merleau-Ponty that we are in the world that is in us: the two are intertwined. Author James Mensch employs the insights of Jan Patočka's asubjective phenomenology to understand this double relationship of being-in. In Post-Deconstructive Subjectivity and History , Aniruddha Chowdhury argues that deconstruction is not only not a dissolution of subject, as it is often opined, but an affirmation of the singular (ethical) subject and singular history, singularity conceived as alterity, difference and non-identity. Part of the emphasis of the singular history is to conceive the historical relation as figural and as one of repletion with difference. Recently, the predominance of natural sciences seems to have cast doubt on the legitimacy of the human sciences. Adopting a phenomenological and hermeneutical point of view, this book is intended to contribute towards a justification of the human sciences, taking account of quintessentially human characteristics. By this reasoning, rooted in a consciousness of phenomena in themselves, a Thomistic realism is advanced wherein scientific inquiry yields objective truth and presupposes a causal principle. This principle, as an inferably true modality, strictly implies a first cause. And this cause as a supreme norm, causally created human nature as it ought to be. So with no naturalistic fallacy, a naturalistic ethics is inferred from our psycho-biological nature that also informs art and politics. Politics, as the institutionalization of ethics, is inferable from ethical prescriptions that are as certifiably true as the descriptions of science that inform it.

Based on the oeuvre of Michel Henry, the contributions collected in the Festschrift "Immanenz und Einheit" examine the relation between immanence and unity under general systematic and practical aspects. First, the foundation of this relation in occidental metaphysics and in phenomenology, especially in the thinking of Michel Henry, is analysed. Then, the view of Michel Henry is compared with those of Meister Eckhard, Fichte, Christian theology and eastern religions in order to develop the perspectives of this relation for the Philosophy of Religion. Furthermore, the consequences of the relation between immanence and unity for ethics and its existential significance are considered. Thus, the Festschrift offers a significant contribution to the understanding of the relationship between immanence and unity which is especially relevant for the thinking of Michel Henry.
