The French May : Actors and Dynamics of a Global Crisis /

: It is now time to stop revering May 68 as a political myth, but to consider it as it was, meaning as a social movement that unexpectedly turned into a tremendous political crisis, bringing French institutions near to collapse. Relying on original data, such as unprecedented archives and personal interviews with former sixty-eighters, the book brings new light on how the revolt was unleashed not only among Paris students but the whole French population, challenged all established hierarchies, shook culture and mores, deeply affected its participants' life course, and contributed to a worldwide context of protest.

Assessing iron age marsh-forts : with reference to the stratigraphy and palaeoenvironment surrounding the Berth, North Shropshire /

: This volume assesses marsh-forts as a separate phenomenon within Iron Age society through an understanding of their landscape context and palaeoenvironmental development. These substantial monuments appear to have been deliberately constructed to control areas of marginal wetland and may have played an important role in the ritual landscape.

From Sasanian Mandaeans to Ṣābians of the marshes /

: This historical study argues that the Mandaean religion originated under Sasanid rule in the fifth century, not earlier as has been widely accepted. It analyzes primary sources in Syriac, Mandaic, and Arabic to clarify the early history of Mandaeism. This religion, along with several other, shorter-lived new faiths, such as Kentaeism, began in a period of state-sponsored persecution of Babylonian paganism. The Mandaeans would survive to become one of many groups known as Ṣābians by their Muslim neighbors. Rather than seeking to elucidate the history of Mandaeism in terms of other religions to which it can be related, this study approaches the religion through the history of its social contexts.

Protagoras claims to be able to educate the young. If «Man is Measure of Everything», anybody can make everybody 'better'... To Plato, this doesn't add up. Insofar as pedagogy aims at making humans become better beings, to Plato it supposes a sound conception of 'being' per se. This study explores the ontological implications of homo mensura , Protagoras' premiss, in the 'Theaetetus' - a dialogue which is rarely read ontologically. If the Protagorean premiss doesn't support the pedagogical claim, the 'Protagoras' might not even be about the educational questions under discussion, but turn out to contain a 'hidden' discourse....

Leaders and masses in the Roman world : studies in honor of Zvi Yavetz /

: It is largely thanks to Zvi Yavetz that the Roman plebs has become "Salonfähig". In numerous important studies Yavetz has focused his - and our - attention on the problem of the relationship between the ruler and the masses of the ruled. Thus, it seemed natural to choose various aspects of this relationship as the topic of a volume in his honour. The articles here contributed by thirteen eminent friends and colleagues deal with historical and theoretical questions of the relationship between "the one" and "the many", covering a period from the second century B.C., through the times of the Late Republic and the Principate, to Late Antiquity and, finally, to an intriguing view at modern totalitarianism as perceived from an Enlightenment perspective.

Emotions, Ethics and Mass Atrocities : Perspectives from Scholars, Teachers and Practitioners /

: "I can vividly recall the feeling of exhaustion I felt listening to this harrowing account. ... At the same time I felt a deep respect for this man who was able to tell his story with great serenity, and I was bothered by my own fatigue and loneliness, which felt so futile next to his."   An Michels, team leader at the Victims and Witnesses Section, International Criminal Court . Mass atrocities cause horrendous suffering. Scholars, students and practitioners who grapple with these crimes are continuously exposed to victims' suffering, perpetrators' ordinariness and imperfect transitional justice mechanisms. How do we cope with our emotions? What ethical implications then arise? Private conversations among colleagues have often taken place hesitantly, fearful it will distract from the actual work. This book, however, brings these conversations to the fore through a series of deeply personal and purposeful reflections to open up new and important conversations. Contributors are: Andy Aydin-Aitchison, Annalisa Battista, Thijs B. Bouwknegt, Anne-Marie de Brouwer, Patrick Cammaert, Koko Christiaanse, Marije Luitjens, Brianne McGonigle Leyh, An Michels, Caecilia Johanna van Peski, Furtuna Sheremeti, Alette Smeulers, Maartje Weerdesteijn and Martin Witteveen.

: ’’The 1953-54 season has been the best tourist season in Luxor since the ar, but strangely enough, we have seen fewer Egyptologists than usual. No excavation, went on since the French Institute is still unable to resume, and the Department of Antiquities did no excavating as such. M. Chewierاs work at Karnak was concentrated on removing the mass of fallen blocks up against the west face of the left (north)tower of the Second Pylon. These loose blocks have been entirely removed now and work can begin toward consolidating the tower. In this mass of blocks M. Chevrier found, for example, blocks with the cartouches of Horemheb which had been recut by Seti و Ramses تد and IV. Also beneath the pile, there was the broken but very nice, nearly life-size, red granite statue presumably of Queen Henuttawy. It had stood literally on the insteps of the colossal standing statue of the High Priest Pinodjem son of Plankh, the parts of which were found last season.
