Brill's companion to Lucan /

: Although it was labeled an anti-epic for trumping the celebratory scope of the Roman national epos, Lucan's Bellum Civile is a hymn to lost republican liberty composed under Nero's tyrannical empire. Lucan lost his life in a foiled conspiracy to replace the emperor, but his poem survived the wreckage of antiquity and enjoyed uninterrupted readership. The present collection samples the most current approaches to Lucan's poem, its themes, its dialogue with other texts, its reception in medieval and early modern literature, and its relevance to audiences of all times.

Ancient worlds in film and television : gender and politics /

: More than a century ago, filmmakers made their primary focus innovative and widely promulgated visions of antiquity, creating a profound effect on the critical, popular, and scholarly reception of antiquity. In this volume, scholars from a variety of countries and varying academic disciplines have addressed film's way of using the field of Classical Reception to investigate, contemplate, and develop hypotheses about present-day culture, society, and politics, with a particular emphasis on gender and gender roles, their relationship to one another, and how filmic constructions of masculinity and femininity shape and are shaped by interacting economic, political, and ideological practices.

Thinking, knowing, acting : epistemology and ethics in Plato and ancient Platonism /

: The volume Thinking, Knowing, Acting: Epistemology and Ethics in Plato and Ancient Platonism aims to offer a fresh perspective on the correlation between epistemology and ethics, a topic of central importance in the Platonic tradition which has not yet received the attention it deserves. The first part deals with the social, juridical premises of Plato's philosophy, with particular regard to the relation between science and practical reason. The second part investigates the reception and development of these problems in Aristotle and the Platonic tradition. Other papers, on Solon and Galen, show that the conflict between knowledge and political action was also a central topic for the other Greek thinkers and contribute by contrast to a better evaluation of the originality of Platonism.

A Companion to Rome (c. 400-1050) /

: Rome was the most accomplished urban form of Mediterranean antiquity. Due to its remarkable and complex urban continuity, it remained the version of a way of living that other cities aspired to achieve throughout the early Middle Ages. Yet Rome between 400 and 1050 is often only studied as an idea that inspired imaginations, or for the papacy's role in cultural transmission across Europe. This volume drastically refocuses our attention on Rome's inhabitants, their identities, relationships, institutions, experiences, agencies, and spaces, and on how these local aspects interacted with the city's universal character. It also bridges two periods of Rome that are typically separated, namely late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Through collaborative authorship of thematic essays, it integrates Anglophone discourses and approaches to Rome by scholars from Italian as well as other European traditions. Contributors are: Margaret Andrews, Shane Bobrycki, Giulia Bordi, François Bougard, Samuel Cohen, Marios Costambeys, Joseph Dyer, Clemens Gantner, Caroline Goodson, Robert Heffron, Julia Hillner, Mark Humphries, Paul Johnson, Maijastina Kahlos, Paolo Liverani, Markus Löx, Carlos Machado, Federico Marazzi, Maya Maskarinec, Silvia Orlandi, Riccardo Santangeli Valenzani, Kristina Sessa, Lucrezia Spera, Francesca Romana Stasolla, Michela Stefani, Francesca Tinti, Dennis Trout, Andrea Verardi, Massimiliano Vitiello, Giorgia Vocino, Veronica West Harling, and Sarah Whitten.

The ancient Mediterranean environment between science and history /

: Scientists, historians and archaeologists are at last beginning to collaborate seriously on studies of the long-term history of the environment. The fruit of an international conference held in Rome in 2011, The Ancient Mediterranean Environment between Science and History brings together scientists and scholars who are interested in the interaction of their several disciplines as well as in specific problems such as the effects of climate change and other environmental factors on historical developments and events, the sources of the energy and fuel used in ancient civilizations, and the effects of humans on the lands around the Mediterranean. The collection balances broad Mediterranean-wide studies and tightly focused studies of particular regions in Italy and Jordan.

Silius Italicus and the Tradition of the Roman Historical Epos /

: The aim of this volume is to study Silius' poem as an important step in the development of the Roman historical epic tradition. The Punica is analyzed as transitional segment between the beginnings of Roman literature in the Republican age (Naevius and Ennius) and Claudian's panegyrical epic in late antiquity, shedding light on its 'inclusiveness' and its peculiar, internal dialectic between antiquarian taste and problematic actualization. This is an innovative attempt to connect epic poems and authors belonging to different ages, to frame the development of the literary genre, according to its specific aims and interests throughout the centuries.

Brill's companion to Silius Italicus /

: Only recently have scholars turned their attention to Silius Italicus' Punica , a poem the reputation of which was eclipsed by the emergence of Virgil's Aeneid as the canonical Latin epos of Augustan Rome. This collection of essays aims at examining the importance of Silius' historical epic in Flavian, Domitianic Rome by offering a detailed overview of the poem's context and intertext, its themes and images, and its reception from antiquity through Renaissance and modern philological criticism. This pioneering volume is the first comprehensive, collaborative study on the longest epic poem in Latin literature.
