An English-Hindustani Vocabulary /

Hindustani, also known as Hindi-Urdu, was one of the most popular languages during the eighteenth century. It is widely spoken in Northern India, Deccan, and parts of Pakistan. It retained its grammar and core vocabulary of the then-medieval Delhi province dialects with Persian, Arabic, and Turkic words. This language was developed as the result of linguistic diversity during the Muslim hegemony in India. Hindustani was further developed during the British era. Even, the father of the Indian nation, Mahatma Gandhi, also favoured Hindustani as the language of India. But today, it is generally associated with the language spoken by North Indian and Deccani Muslims. This book is a bilingual work, representing 5184 English words, and 3000 Hindustani colloquial words, and this list contains common words spoken on an everyday basis by the countryside population of Northern India.

A Badaga and English Dictionary : Glossary and Gazetteer (3 Parts) /

The two authors were jointly responsible for the first version of this Badaga Dictionary (Berlin 1992). It is now extensively revised and expanded to two volumes, and - unique for a Dravidian dictionary - it includes some 2000 local place-names. The vocabulary documented here was partly collected by the two authors during long-term fieldwork, but otherwise came from records of Badaga folk literature. Although there are several dialects of the language, these have not yet been systematically studied; but dialectal variations are nonetheless recorded wherever they are known. An introductory essay examines the status of the language, while another essay outlines the cultural history of the Badaga people. Many entries here include the bibliographic references to the extensive Nilgiri regional literature, and these will prove invaluable to natural scientists, even those not concerned with the Badaga language. Thousands of entries also include notes on religious or cultural beliefs and practices in the Nilgiri Hills.

The absence of a specialized bilingual dictionary (or glossary) of terminology which would facilitate the work of both scholars and students of archaeology (and, to a lesser degree, history) has long been noted. Several dictionaries or compact encyclopaedias of archaeological terms have been published in both Greek and English since the 19th century (some of the latter have been translated in Greek as well). All of them however have been written in one of those languages, explaining (quite often with useful images) each term but not providing its equivalent in the other language. It is hoped that the present work will cover this lacuna in international bibliography.

Fragments of Languages : From 'Restsprachen' to Contemporary Endangered Languages /

The book deals with the concept of fragmentation as applied to languages and their documentation. It focuses in particular on the theoretical and methodological consequences of such a fragmentation for the linguistic analysis and interpretation of texts and, hence, for the reconstruction of languages. Furthermore, by adopting an innovative perspective, the book aims to test the application of the concept of fragmentation to languages which are not commonly included in the categories of 'Corpussprache', 'Trümmersprache', and 'Restsprache'. This is the case with diachronic or diatopic varieties - of even well-known languages - which are only attested through a limited corpus of texts as well as with endangered languages. In this latter case, not only is the documentation fragmented, but the very linguistic competence of the speakers, due to the reduction of contexts of language use, interference phenomena with majority languages, and consequent presence of semi-speakers.
