This volume deals with the relation between Jacques Derrida's writing and Neoplatonism (ancient, patristic, medieval). Starting from the undeniable fact of Derrida's continuous engagement with this tradition, the present study deals not only with the actual reading of the Neoplatonists by Derrida ("Derrida after Neoplatonism") but also with a hypothetical reading of Derrida by Neoplatonism ("Neoplatonism after Derrida"). Thus, the intended audience is both philologists and philosophers interested in the encounter of ancient and contemporary thought. Separate chapters are devoted to a general study of Neoplatonism and Deconstruction, commentaries on three Derridean texts in which their 'Neoplatonic' implications are developed, and a treatment of the problem of non-discursive thought in which all Neoplatonic and Derridean perspectives are transcended.

Legal issues of personal status - including those implicating women's rights - continue to be a focal area of shari'a judicial practice in the Muslim world. Changing ideas of marriage, relations between the spouses, divorce, and the rights of divorcees and widows challenge the courts around the Arab world. In this context, the areas that came under the Palestinian Authority in 1994 command particular attention: the particular political and socio-economic circumstances that surround Palestine's progress toward full statehood have created a remarkable crucible for the synthesis of a new family law in the Arab world. This rigorous study of the interpretation and application of personal status law in the Palestinian West Bank (and to a lesser extent in the Gaza Strip) is the most extensive yet attempted. It presents a systematic analysis of the application of Islamic family law in nearly 10,000 marriage contracts, 1000 deeds of talaq (unilateral divorce) or khul' (divorce with renunciation), and 2000 judicial rulings over a time span that includes Jordanian rule and Israeli military occupation, updating this with material from the beginning of the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority. Taken into account are the sources of law used in the shari'a courts of the West Bank: the successive codes of family law (the Jordanian Law of Personal Status 1976 and its predecessor the Jordanian Law of Family Rights 1951), and traditional Hanafi rules and texts, along with commentaries by prominent contemporary shari'a scholars and Appeal Court decisions - as well as the amendments and modifications being sought by civil society actors (notably women's groups) in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as in Jordan.

Psalms or Psalter? This study creates a new, solid foundation for discussions on the psalm manuscripts found in the Judean Desert. A variety of explanatory models, statistics and synthetic hypotheses have already been produced in the course of numerous analyses and interpretations. However, the disparate and fragmentary character of the manuscripts has barely received any attention since the main focus has mostly been on discussions of the content. For the first time, the entire preserved fragment material of the psalm manuscripts from the Judean Desert is here being presented and edited as a whole. In this way, it can be defined and analyzed in future studies. New ways of exploring the contents will particularly result with regard to the best preserved psalm roll, 11QPs a. Psalmen oder Psalter? Die vorliegende Studie schafft eine neue, tragfähigere Basis für die Auseinandersetzung um die Psalmenhandschriften aus der Wüste Juda. Im Rahmen zahlreicher Analysen und Interpretationen wurden schon vielfältige Erklärungsmodelle, Statistiken und Gesamthypothesen zu den Psalmenhandschriften geliefert. Da das Hauptaugenmerk der meisten Untersuchungen bislang auf der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung lag, wurde der disparate und fragmentarische Charakter der Manuskripte kaum berücksichtigt. Erstmals wird nun das gesamte erhaltene Fragmentenmaterial der Psalmenhandschriften aus der Wüste Juda umfassend dargestellt und aufbereitet. Auf diese Weise lässt es sich definieren und für weitere Untersuchungen auswerten. Gerade in Hinsicht auf die besterhaltene Psalmenrolle 11QPs a ergeben sich so ganz neue Wege zur Erschließung der Handschrift.

Lucian's Alexander the False Prophet is the only literary testimony to a highly influential cult of the 'New Asclepios Glycon' which, as archaeological evidence continues to document, spread all over the eastern Mediterranean basin throughout the second and third centuries AD. This book offers an analysis of the complete manuscript tradition, a newly constituted text and a German translation. The extensive introduction deals with (1) the archaeological evidence, (2) the question of Lucian's historical reliability, (3) the reasons for Lucian's opposition to the oracle of Abonuteichos, (4) the institutions and the teaching of the cult at Abonuteichos. Furthermore, there is a commentary on all philological and historical questions and on those issues relevant to the history of religions. Lucian's Alexander is not one of his satirical bravuras, but a strikingly successful attempt at writing a work of contemporary history - a practical example of what the author himself has theoretically discussed in his work, How to Write History .

Being different : more Neoplatonism after Derrida /

Having now benefited from viable editions and studies of many of the most important authors within the Neoplatonic tradition of western philosophy, it is time for us to read these materials more actively in terms of the philosophical developments of the late twentieth century that provide the greatest opportunities for intertextual exploration. The hermeneutical project that beckons was begun in Stephen Gersh's Neoplatonism after Derrida: Parallelograms (Brill, 2006) and is raised to a higher power in his present volume. Here a new course is charted in the reading of such ancient authors as Proclus, Damascius, Augustine, Pseudo-Dionysius, and Meister Eckhart through a critical engagement with the deconstructions of pagan and Christian Neoplatonic texts in the writings of Jacques Derrida.

Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt eine neue Lesart von Johann Gottlieb Fichtes populärer Schrift "Die Bestimmung des Menschen" (1800) vor, deren wesentliche Aussagen mit zentralen Thesen zeitgenössischer differenztheoretischer Theorieentwürfe, wie etwa dem erkenntnistheoretischen Konstruktivismus Niklas Luhmanns, der Dekonstruktion Jacques Derridas und - mit Einschränkungen - der modernen Evolutionstheorie in der Folge Charles Darwins, in Beziehung gesetzt und konfrontiert werden. In kritischer sowie affirmativer Auseinandersetzung mit gegenwärtigen Theorieansätzen erweist sich so die Anschluss- und Leistungsfähigkeit sowie die immer währende Aktualität des Fichteschen Denkens. Ein abschließender Rückblick bringt die populärphilosophischen Überlegungen Fichtes mit dessen wissenschaftlichen Ausführungen der 1798/99 vorgetragenen Vorlesungen über die "Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo" in Verbindung und ordnet sie vor deren Hintergrund in die Arbeit Fichtes in Jena von 1794 bis 1799 ein. Auf diese Weise wird schließlich die andauernde Bedeutung der Wissenschaftslehre Fichtes für die Philosophie des 21. Jahrhunderts und darüber hinaus offenbar.

People and land in the holiness code : an exegetical study of the ideational framework of the law in Leviticus 17-26 /

This work proposes a reconstruction of the thought world underlying the Holiness Code (Leviticus 17-26). It focuses on the notions of people and land, which are central to the way the law is presented in this corpus. Important themes treated include the sons of Israel, the resident alien, the call to holiness, the camp in the desert and the land as the property of the Lord. The conceptual universe of the Holiness Code is entirely dominated by the notion of the presence of the Lord in his sanctuary, in the midst of his people. It is this presence which requires the Israelites to observe holiness and confers upon the land its particular status. The priestly conception of the relationship between God, people and land finds interesting parallels in the ideology of holy places evidenced in writings from the Ancient Near East.

Die Dissertation untersucht, wie sich die Krimireihe "Die drei ???" von einer klassischen Kinder- und Jugendserie zu einem generationsübergreifenden Kultphänomen entwickelt hat. Sie analysiert, wie die Serie Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene langfristig bindet. Mithilfe literatur- und medienwissenschaftlicher Methoden werden narrative Strukturen, intertextuelle Bezüge, mediale Verfahren und Marketingstrategien identifiziert, die die sogenannte "Mehrfachadressierung" ermöglichen. Ein zentrales Ergebnis der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines Kriterienkatalogs, der die textimmanenten und außertextuellen Faktoren erfasst, die den All-Age-Erfolg bedingen. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass "Die drei ???" nicht nur als Kinderkrimi, sondern als "gewachsene" kulturbedeutsame All-Age-Reihe zu verstehen sind - ein Beispiel für die erfolgreiche Transformation eines Kinderformats zu einem wirtschaftlich bedeutenden, generationsübergreifenden Phänomen.
