Auf der Grundlage des Werkes von Michel Henry untersuchen die in der Festschrift "Immanenz und Einheit" gesammelten Beiträge das Verhältnis von Immanenz und Einheit unter allgemein systematischen und praktischen Gesichtspunkten. Dabei wird zunächst die Grundlegung dieses Verhältnisses in der abendländischen Metaphysik und in der Phänomenologie, insbesondere im philosophischen Denken Henrys, in den Blick genommen. Darauf aufbauend werden durch Vergleiche zwischen Henrys Philosophie einerseits und den Ansätzen Meister Eckharts, Fichtes, der christlichen Theologie und fernöstlicher Religionen andererseits religionsphilosophische Perspektiven dieses Verhältnisses aufgezeigt. Schließlich werden die ethischen Konsequenzen des Verhältnisses von Immanenz und Einheit analysiert und dessen existentiell-lebenspraktische Bedeutung herausgestellt. Daher bietet die Festschrift einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis des für die Philosophie Michel Henrys so bedeutenden Verhältnisses von Immanenz und Einheit. Based on the oeuvre of Michel Henry, the contributions collected in the Festschrift "Immanenz und Einheit" examine the relation between immanence and unity under general systematic and practical aspects. First, the foundation of this relation in occidental metaphysics and in phenomenology, especially in the thinking of Michel Henry, is analysed. Then, the view of Michel Henry is compared with those of Meister Eckhard, Fichte, Christian theology and eastern religions in order to develop the perspectives of this relation for the Philosophy of Religion. Furthermore, the consequences of the relation between immanence and unity for ethics and its existential significance are considered. Thus, the Festschrift offers a significant contribution to the understanding of the relationship between immanence and unity which is especially relevant for the thinking of Michel Henry.

In Community Building in the Shepherd of Hermas , Mark Grundeken investigates key aspects of Christian community life as reflected upon in the early Christian writing the Shepherd of Hermas (2nd century C.E.). Grundeken's thematic study deals with various topics: the community's identity, including its (alleged) 'Jewish Christianness', (lack of) resurrection belief, sectarian tendencies and its relation to the authorities and to the emperor cult; social features, encompassing gender roles and charity; and rituals such as baptism, metanoia , Eucharistic meals, the Sunday collection, dancing (and singing), the 'holy kiss' and reading of Scripture. The many fruitful entries prove Hermas to be one of the main texts for studying the development of community building in the early church.

C.H. Turner pioneered the study of the language and style of Mark's Gospel in a series of articles in the 1920s entitled \'Notes on Marcan usage\'. All but one appeared in the Journal of Theological Studies - one further \'Note\' is published now for the first time. It is Turner's articles, reprinted with editorial additions, that form the backbone of the present book. Comparable articles by those who have followed in C.H. Turner's footsteps (G.D. Kilpatrick, J.K. Elliott, N. Turner) are also included. Some of these are published for the first time. The Derveni Papyrus: Unearthing Ancient Mysteries is devoted to this fascinating and challenging document, discovered in 1962 in a tomb in Derveni, near Thessaloniki, and dated c. 340-320 BCE. It contains a text probably written at the end of 5th c. BCE, which after some reflections on minor divinities and unusual cults, comments upon a poem attributed to Orpheus from an allegorical and philosophical perspective. This volume focuses on the restoration and conservation of the papyrus, the ideas of the anonymous author about Erinyes and daimons, the quoted Orphic poem in comparison with Hesiod's Theogony and Parmenides' poem, the exegetical approach of the commentator, his cosmogonic system, his attitude regarding mystery cults and his peculiar theology.

This book deals with some (fragmentary) poems of Alcaeus, Archilochus, Hipponax and Stesichorus. The choice of the poems was determined by external factors: all of them are written on papyrus and were first published during the last few decades. After the first edition the fragments were discussed by many scholars, mainly in periodicals. The authors of this volume have assembled the results of this scholarly work and used it as a foundation for a carefully contituted text and an extensive overall commentary. In this way the poems will be more easily accessible than they were hitherto.

Demotic funerary stelae and other short texts gathered from many publications

With this volume of Short Texts the collection of epigraphical texts initiated in the first volume of our series reaches completion with the demotic funerary stelae, 247 in all. All those with known provenance are listed in geographical order from South to North resulting in sometimes bulky listings for several individual places: for example of 24 nos. for Dendara, 79 for Abydos (even two new, hitherto unpublished ones), 22 for Akhmim, 43 for Memphis, or 36 for the Delta, with, at the end, only 19 of unknown provenance. The chapter on Memphis notably presents the demotic parts of the stelae of the High Priests of Memphis, among which several are exceptionally long and renowned for their varied contents. In addition to all this there is also a sizeable chapter with 42 Serapeum stelae, even two previously unpublished ones. The small reproductions of the stelae collected towards the end of the volume provide a vivid illustration of the varying styles of all these different cultural centres. The second part of the volume presents Addenda to the first three volumes of Short Texts, covering some 200 more pages of text. These show what almost a full decade of Demotic Studies may produce in the fields of, e.g., mummy linen and graffiti. Among these are also nearly fifty pages with mummy labels including three previously unpublished ones, over ten published since our last volume, and notably thirty-eight labels from the Louvre, some published by Revillout as far back as the nineteenth century. We had left these out of our vol. II in view of the proposed Louvre Catalogue that was then expected to appear, but we now think they ought to be made readily accessible side by side with the other published mummy labels that we have gathered in these volumes from however Many Publications.
The naos of Amasis : a monument for the reawakening of Osiris /
:
The naos AM 107 of the Museum of Antiquities of Leiden was built by king Amasis in the VIth century BC, a period that saw an intense production of monolithic shrines. Despite its not impressive dimensions, however, the naos of Leiden stands out for its originality. What is particularly interesting about this monument is that its distinctiveness is strictly connected to the nature of its recipient. Amasis dedicated the naos to Osiris Hemag, one of the most important and enigmatic Osirian forms of the first millennium BC. Osiris Hemag represents Osiris in a crucial moment of his existence, his reawakening. It was precisely this aspect of the god that strongly influenced both the shape and the decoration of the naos, creating a unique effect: indeed, this is the only Egyptian naos showing on his surfaces groups of guardian-deities who had the task to protect the body of Osiris and to assist him in his rebirth and rejuvenation. This naos is not only a shrine housing a statue of Osiris Hemag, but it is also a monument conveying a new definition of the god and ideas concerning his rebirth.

Living in the Ottoman ecumenical community : essays in honour of Suraiya Faroqhi /

This book dedicated to Suraiya Faroqhi shows that the early modern world was not only characterized by its having been split up into states with closed frontiers. Writing history "from the bottom", by treating the Ottoman Empire and other countries as "subjects of history", reduces the importance of political borders for doing historical research. Each social, economic and religious group had its own world-view and in most of the cases the borders of these communities were not identical with the political frontiers. Regarding the Ottoman Empire and the other early modern states as systems of different ecumenical communities rather than only as political units offers a different approach to a better understanding of the various ways in which their subjects interacted. In this context the term ecumenical community designates social, religious and economic groups building up cross-border communities. Different ecumenical communities overlapped within the boundaries of a state or in a specific area and gave them their distinctive characters. This festschrift for Suraiya Faroqhi aims to describe some of the close contacts between various ecumenical communities within and beyond the Ottoman borders.

Celebrated today for his groundbreaking work in logic and the foundations of mathematics, Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848) was best known in his own time as a leader of the reform movement in his homeland (Bohemia, then part of the Austrian Empire). As professor of religious science at the Charles University in Prague from 1805 to 1819, Bolzano was a highly visible public intellectual, a courageous and determined critic of abuses in Church and State. Based in large part on a carefully argued utilitarian practical philosophy, he developed a non-violent program for the reform of the authoritarian institutions of the Empire, which he himself set in motion through his teaching and other activities. Rarely has a philosopher had such a great impact on the political culture of his homeland. This volume contains a substantial collection of Bolzano's writings on ethics and politics, translated into English for the first time. It includes a complete translation of the treatise On the Best State , his principal writings on ethics, an essay on the contemporary situation in Ireland, and a selection of his Exhortations, dealing with such topics as enlightenment, civil disobedience, the status of women, anti-Semitism and Czech-German relations in Bohemia. It will be of particular interest to students of central European philosophy and history, and more generally to philosophers and historians of ideas.
