The Role of State Parties to the Rome Statute in the Interpretation of the Statute : An Evaluation of Past Practice and Future Prospects /

: This book offers a groundbreaking and thought-provoking examination of the intricate interplay between the role of State Parties to the Rome Statute in the interpretation of the Statute, particularly when the International Criminal Court (ICC) holds the explicit authority to do so. Utilizing the interpretation rules under Article 31(3) of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, it demonstrates how State Parties, through their subsequent agreements and practice continue to influence treaty interpretation under the Rome Statute. The book highlights specific examples where State Parties have enacted amendments to the rules and passed resolutions during related ongoing ICC cases, prompting questions about their influence on the ICC's interpretive decisions. The nuanced relationship between State Parties and the ICC in interpreting the Statute is explored, revealing the inherent tension that emerges from the overlapping interpretive roles. It provides insightful recommendations for navigating and alleviating such tensions.

Objects of the past in the past : investigating the significance of earlier artefacts in later contexts /

: How did past communities view, understand and communicate their pasts? And how can we, as archaeologists, understand this? In recent years these questions have been approached through studies of the extended occupation and use of landscapes, monuments and artefacts to explore concepts of time and memory. But what of objects that were already old in the past? Interpretations for these items have ranged from the discard of scrap to objects of veneration. Evidence from a range of periods would suggest objects of the past were an important part of many later societies that encountered them, either as heirlooms with remembered histories or rediscovered curiosities from a more distant past. This volume brings together a range of case studies in which objects of the past were encountered and reappropriated.

Jeannette Rankin, Republican Party Radical /

: Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to serve in the U.S. Congress, has understandably been celebrated for improving government diversity. However, she did not fit in comfortably with that body's chauvinistic routine, encountering hostility to her ideas, to her gender, and even to her presence during the two terms that she was able to serve. It is the claim of the present work that she is better understood as a radical: a feminist, a pacifist, an advocate for the rights of the poor, a supporter of Irish nationalism, an American Civil Liberties Union leader, and a keen labor union ally.
