Northern Pontic Antiquities in the State Hermitage Museum /
:
This volume, written by staff of the State Hermitage, one of the world's finest museums, publishes Graeco-Roman antiquities kept there. Much of the material has been unearthed during the museum's field projects in Berezan, Myrmekion and Nymphaeum. Many items are published here for the first time. In addition, there are new studies and reinterpretations of well-known material. The book also contains reviews and notes on new publications on the Black Sea from Eastern and Western Europe and North America. The volume provides a good account of the manifold activities in which the staff of the Department of the History and Culture of the Ancient World, and of the Hermitage in general, are engaged. The book is very richly illustrated, with nearly 150 photographs, line drawings, maps etc.

Wealth, Aristocracy and Royal Propaganda under the Hellenistic Kingdom of the Mithradatids in the Central Black Sea Region of Turkey /
:
A rebellious kingdom on the margins of the great Roman Empire or a kingdom in pursuit of a wider sovereignity? In spite of its notorious political history under the reign of Mithradates VI (120-63 BC), the social and economic history of the Black Sea region constitutes an uncharted territory. This book is a first comprehensive study of the archaeological, literary, and numismatic evidence from the central Black Sea region of Turkey during the Hellenistic Period. The monetary policies of the Pontic cities, testimonial to regional unification under Mithradates and his political influence on neighbouring lands are studied in separate sections. The section on the discovery of a remarkable tomb at Amisos reveals the emergence of the Pontic cities early as the fourth/early 3rd century BC.

Egyptianization and Elite Emulation in Ramesside Palestine : Governance and Accommodation on the Imperial Periphery /
:
A strong Egyptian presence and governance of 13th and 12th centuries B.C. Palestine has since long become clear from both textual and archaeological evidence. How this Egyptianization came about in Ramesside Palestine forms the focus of the present study. Carolyn Higginbotham convincingly attends to internal factors affecting the region's cultural and political development. Two models are carefully considered. The prevailing theory, that Egyptian policy shifted from economic and political domination to military occupation, is contrasted with a new, convincing model, elite emulation, derived from modern core-periphery studies. The author's conclusion is that Egyptian policy remained largely unchanged, and that the increased Egyptianization of the material culture represents voluntary adoption of the overpowering Egyptian culture by the Palestinian ruling class. The appendices are especially important for scholars interested in ancient international connections in Palestine; they catalogue all Egyptian and Egyptian-style material from LB IIB - Iron 1A Palestine.

Gallo-Roman Bronzes and the Process of Romanization: The Cobannus Hoard /
:
This book constitutes the first comprehensive publication of a cache of eight bronzes from east-central Gaul. The types of objects and accompanying inscriptions suggest that these bronzes originally came from a sanctuary of a god named Cobannus. The first part of the book describes, analyzes, and interprets the individual objects, which are divided between the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Shelby White - Leon Levy Collection. The latter part of this work places the cache within a chronological, cultic, and cultural context. The Cobannus hoard is valuable not only from an artistic point of view but also for the information it provides on many different aspects of the religious, social, and political life of Roman Gaul. The book is lavishly illustrated, with 2 maps and 117 illustrations.

Antique Dealing and Creative Reuse in Cairo and Damascus 1850-1890 : Intercultural Engagements with Architecture and Craft in the Age of Travel and Reform /
:
"The commodification of Islamic antiques intensified in the late Ottoman Empire, an age of domestic reform and increased European interference following the Tanzimat (reorganisation) of 1839. Mercedes Volait examines the social life of typical objects moving from Cairo and Damascus to Paris, London, and beyond, uncovers the range of agencies and subjectivities involved in the trade of architectural salvage and historic handicraft, and traces impacts on private interiors, through creative reuse and Revival design, in Egypt, Europe and America. By devoting attention to both local and global engagements with Middle Eastern tangible heritage, the present volume invites to look anew at Orientalism in art and interior design, the canon of Islamic architecture and the translocation of historic works of art"--

The antiquities trade in Egypt 1880-1930 : the H.O. Lange papers /
:
"The vast collections of Egyptian objects on display in Western museums attract millions of visitors every year, and they reinforce a cultural fascination for this ancient civilisation that has been a feature of European intellectual history since Roman times. This book tells the story of how these objects came to be here. ... The book presents the first in-depth analysis of this market during its 'golden age' in Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th Century. It is primarily based on the archival material of the Danish Egyptologist H. O. Lange (1863-1943) who, during two prolonged stays in Egypt (1899/1900 and 1929/1930), bought objects on behalf of Danish museums. The travel diaries, and the accompanying photographs, are complemented by a wide range of other sources, including contemporary travel guides and various travel memoirs, which together paint an extraordinarily detailed picture of the extensive antiquities trade."

Before Vijayanagara : Prehistoric Landscapes and Politics in the Tungabhadra Basin /
:
Vijayanagara: Warfare and the Archaeology of Defence investigates those features of the Vijayanagara site that allowed this greatest of southern Indian capitals to function as a fortifed citadel, resisting invaders for almost two hundred years, before finally succumbing after the catastrophic battle of January 1565. The volume systematically documents the surviving earthen and granite ramparts of the city that are spread over a vast urban area, incorporating the Royal Centre and Urban Core of the capital, and also the twin city of Anegondi. The author's investigation covers walls, bastions and parapets, barbicans and gateways, moats and ditches, all of which achieved an effective system of surveillance and communication. Brubaker subjects these diverse archaeological data to statistical analysis by measuring constructional and formal variations of these features in the different parts of the site using qualitative and quantitative scales. The explanations that he offers for these variations contribute to a new understanding of the functioning of the Vijayanagara site as a military citadel, as well as to the overall development of fortifcations in southern India during the 14th to 16th centuries. In particular, the author considers the new strategies of gunpowder and artillery introduced into India at this time, and their seemingly negligible impact on Vijayanagara's fortifcations. Brubaker's study, illustrated with photographs, topographic maps, detailed archaeological surveys and statistical tables, makes it the definitive investigation of the subject.
