Gottes Herrschaft : eine Analyse der Denkschrift (Jes 6, 1-9, 6) /

: This volume analyses the so-called 'Denkschrift' (Isa 6:1-9:6) by focussing on the image of God's Reign. It discusses the literary formation and shows that the idea of God's Reign is the red line connecting independent texts in former times. The study focuses on the literary formation and on the images of God's Reign. Subjects included are the investigation of the literary form of Isa 6, comparisons with neo-assyrian prophecies and royal texts from Egypt and the discussion of literary form and origin of the messianic announcement in Isa 9. The final description of the image of God's Reign gives a deeper insight in the development of theological ideas in ancient Israel and is useful for a closer view on Judah's history of religion between the 8th and 5th centuries B.C.E.

The investigation focusses on the meaning and function of the term kābôd JHWH in the Hebrew Bible and presents three profiles of kābôd-Theology. While Ancient Near Eastern sources contain the root kbd / kbt always with the meaning 'heaviness' or 'to hounour', in biblical texts the authors developed the term towards an aspect representing his presence. The study shows that the Priestly sources of the Pentateuch, the Book of Isaiah and the Book of Ezekiel contain different images deriving from various sources - bilibcal and non-biblical - forming three literary profiles of the divine kābôd. The investigation of later Pentateuchal and Isaian texts shows that these texts interact while the profile of the Ezekialian tradition was not incorprated anymore.

The Fourth Gospel and the Scriptures : illuminating the form and meaning of scriptural citation in John 19:37 /

: In The Fourth Gospel and the Scriptures, new insights from 4QXII manuscripts and the Minor Prophets Scroll help unlock the mystery of John's unique form of scriptural citation. Focusing on 19:37, Bynum argues convincingly that John's citation from Zechariah is both accurate and historically reliable. Carefully considering the biblical textual milieu of the era brings to light John's concern for fidelity to the prominent Hebrew text of his day, and for the correctness of the Septuagint form of the citation. From this analysis new light is shed on the critical role the citation plays in the Johannine Passion Narrative, and its meaning within the theological development of the Fourth Gospel.

The uncertainty of a hearing : a study of the sudden change of mood in the Psalms of lament /

: An interesting feature in the lament psalms is the sudden change of mood. Unfortunately, as the term that has come to be associated with the subject indicates - 'Certainty of a Hearing' - the change of mood is understood only in terms of a movement from lament to praise. This has led to a redefinition of lament in terms of petition and an overemphasis on praise. The present book seeks to redress this one-sided emphasis by drawing attention to the other movements in the Psalter - the reverse movement from praise to lament, return to lament after praise and the alternation between the two. We do not only have a 'Certainty of a Hearing'; we also have an 'Uncertainty of a Hearing'.

Heralds of the good news : Isaiah and Paul "in concert" in the letter to the Romans /

: In this text-critical, literary, and theological investigation of Paul's interpretation of Isaiah in Romans, it is argued that Paul's citations and allusions evince sustained and careful attention to significant portions of Isaiah, in concert with other scriptural voices. Through a radical rereading of Isaiah, Paul appropriates these prophetic oracles as prefigurations of his own mission to Gentiles while simultaneously appealing to Isaiah as a witness to God's continuing fidelity to Israel. The book examines each of Paul's citations and allusions to Isaiah, situating them both within the milieu of early Jewish interpretive practices and within the context of Paul's unfolding argument in Romans. This volume contributes to the current debate about early Christian interpretation of scripture by tracing the complex and dynamic interrelationship in Paul's letter of Scripture, theology, and mission. The Bible in Aramaic. based on old manuscripts and printed texts /

: In 1924, Professor Sperber graduated from Bonn University with a dissertation on \'Das Propheten-Targum in seinem Verhältnis zum masoretischen Text\'. He was then invited to prepare a critical edition of the Targum. Thus Professor Sperber began an immense task. The Bible in Aramaic is the fruit of more than forty years of study, during which he made innumerable trips to various countries in order to visit libraries and examine manuscripts. The first part of the Bible in Aramaic appeared in 1959. Needless to say that this work is indispensable for students of the Old Testament. Let the reviews that have accumulated over the years speak for themselves.

L'énigme du bonheur : étude sur le sujet du bien dans le livre de Qohélet /

: This study deals with the question of happiness in the book of Qoheleth, starting with the contemporary debate among modern writers concerning the status of various encouraging statements that emerge out of a general context in which "all is vanity". The first part of this study describes the current position of research, examining the debated questions. The second part proposes an exegetical and contextual inquiry of the words for happiness, drawn up by these authors. The third part suggests a way of resolving the enigma of happiness, based upon an additional formula of happiness, located at the beginning of the second half of the book. Gradually, a conviction takes shape: happiness does not have the same status in the two parts of the book. If, at first, happiness is presented as the only alternative given by God to help man to hold on when faced with the fleetingness of things in life, it later becomes an art of living, apt to be taught to future generations.

Between philology and theology : contributions to the study of ancient Jewish interpretation /

: The essays by Florentino García Martínez collected in this volume reflect some of his most recent work on theological concepts as they are formed in the interpretations and in the imagination of ancient Jewish writers, and thus illuminate the nexus between philology and theology. The essays, five of which are published for the first time in English, engage a broad range of ancient Jewish texts ranging from Philo and the Dead Sea Scrolls, to Jubilees, 4 Ezra and the Targumim. Focus of the essays is the way in which ancient Jewish writers (and, in the case of 4 Ezra, Christian Renaissance authors) are interpreting and transforming earlier biblical traditions and how these new interpretations shape theological concepts.

Protest or propaganda : war in the Old Testament book of Kings and in contemporaneous ancient Near Eastern texts /

: In this study, the war stories from the Old Testament book of Kings are compared to ten extrabiblical texts. Narratological analysis is applied to deconstruct the ideology of the respective literary compositions. The Old Testament ideology of war seems to be neither typically Israelite, as Gerhardt von Rad put it, nor commonly Ancient Near Eastern, as Manfred Weippert thought it to be. This poses the question whether the reading experience of biblical war stories is so very different from, for instance, Assyrian royal inscriptions, both in terms of its literary value and its ideological bias. Narratological analysis turns out to be a strong tool for explaining the similarities and distinctive features of the respective texts.

Theologies in conflict in 4 Ezra : wisdom, debate, and apocalyptic solution /

: Recent scholarship on 4 Ezra has taken two divergent approaches, the first reading the dialogues between Ezra and Uriel as a reflection of theological debates in the author's time, and the second focusing on the psychological development of the protagonist. Combining the two approaches, this book offers a new interpretation of the dialogues as a literary representation of a debate between covenantal and eschatological wisdom, two branches of Jewish wisdom that emerged in the late Second Temple period. The inconclusive quality of the dialogues indicates the author's dissatisfaction with Uriel's attempt at a rational theodicy. Ezra's subsequent transformation points to the symbolic visions as the locus of the author's apocalyptic solution to the intractable theological problems raised in the dialogues.

Retelling Scripture : "the Jews" and the scriptural citations in John 1:19-12:15 /

: The last century of scholarship on the Old Testament citations in the Gospel of John has concentrated almost exclusively upon source-critical or redaction-critical issues with the aim of determining the Christological import of the citations. The current book brings a narrative-rhetorical methodology to bear upon the seven explicit Scriptural citations in the Gospel's 'Book of Signs' (1:19-12:50) that are prefaced by a distinct introductory formula (1:19-12:15). These citations are each addressed to, or imply, a particular textual audience, namely, 'the Jews'. This book argues that as such the citations do not merely have Christological significance but function at the narrative level to encourage an ideal reader to construct a particularly negative characterization of 'the Jews'.
