Greece and Rome have long featured in books for children and teens, whether through the genres of historical fiction, fantasy, mystery stories or mythological compendiums. These depictions and adaptations of the Ancient World have varied at different times, however, in accordance with changes in societies and cultures. This book investigates the varying receptions and ideological manipulations of the classical world in children's literature. Its subtitle, Heroes and Eagles , reflects the two most common ways in which this reception appears, namely in the forms of the portrayal of the Greek heroic world of classical mythology on the one hand, and of the Roman imperial presence on the other. In deze geannoteerde bibliografie van jeugdboeken, waarin Nederlands-Indië en Indonesië een rol spelen, worden 1244 titels gerangschikt. Deze oorspronkelijk Nederlandstalige titels verschenen tussen 1825 en 1991. Van elke titel is een volledige bibliografische beschrijving op genomen, aangevuld met gegevens over eventuele herdrukken en vindplaatsen. Van elke uitgave wordt tevens een samenvatting gegeven, waarin ook informatie is opgenomen over plaats, streek of land waar het verhaal is gestitueerd en onder welke bevolkingsgroep (Indonesisch, Indo-Europees, Nederlands) en sociale klasse het zich afspeelt. Registers op auteurs, illustratoren, uitgevers, titels en onderwerpen ontsluiten de bibliografie en de annotaties. Een inleiding verantwoordt de werkwijze en signaleert een aantal grote lijnen in de Indische jeugdliteratuur. Deze unieke bibliografie is het resultaat van vele jaren speur-en verzamelwerk van Dorotheé Buur (1938) die als documentaliste/archiviste is verbonden aan de afdeling Documentatie Geschiedenis Indonesië van het KITLV. Haar bibliografie maakt een onbekend en onderschat genre lectuur en literatuur toegankelijk, waarin geschiedenis en actualiteit, alsook opvattingen, mentaliteit en vooroordeel alle hun weerslag vinden.
