Demotic funerary stelae and other short texts gathered from many publications

: With this volume of Short Texts the collection of epigraphical texts initiated in the first volume of our series reaches completion with the demotic funerary stelae, 247 in all. All those with known provenance are listed in geographical order from South to North resulting in sometimes bulky listings for several individual places: for example of 24 nos. for Dendara, 79 for Abydos (even two new, hitherto unpublished ones), 22 for Akhmim, 43 for Memphis, or 36 for the Delta, with, at the end, only 19 of unknown provenance. The chapter on Memphis notably presents the demotic parts of the stelae of the High Priests of Memphis, among which several are exceptionally long and renowned for their varied contents. In addition to all this there is also a sizeable chapter with 42 Serapeum stelae, even two previously unpublished ones. The small reproductions of the stelae collected towards the end of the volume provide a vivid illustration of the varying styles of all these different cultural centres. The second part of the volume presents Addenda to the first three volumes of Short Texts, covering some 200 more pages of text. These show what almost a full decade of Demotic Studies may produce in the fields of, e.g., mummy linen and graffiti. Among these are also nearly fifty pages with mummy labels including three previously unpublished ones, over ten published since our last volume, and notably thirty-eight labels from the Louvre, some published by Revillout as far back as the nineteenth century. We had left these out of our vol. II in view of the proposed Louvre Catalogue that was then expected to appear, but we now think they ought to be made readily accessible side by side with the other published mummy labels that we have gathered in these volumes from however Many Publications.

The Royal Mortuary Cult Complex in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. Part I : the Chapel of Tuthmosis I

: The volume is an "editio princeps" of the Chapel of Thutmosis I, a shrine located in the southern part of the upper terrace of the Theban funerary complex of Hatshepsut. The shrine was built by order of the queen to commemorate her father and housed the pharaoh?s mortuary cult in relation to that celebrated for the queen in the adjoining Chapel of Hatshepsut. Its decoration, patterned upon that of the Chapel of Hatshepsut, although significantly smaller in scale, follows iconographic schemes in vogue from the illustrious era of the Old Kingdom and the pyramid temples of the great pharaohs of more than a thousand years earlier.0Forgotten and completely demolished after the mortuary cults ceased to be celebrated in the royal temples at Deir el-Bahari, the chapel has been mostly inaccessible until now. It has now been studied and a reconstruction of its fragmented decoration has been proposed, linking the preserved remains and the separate blocks and fragments painstakingly positioned above them, to aid in a visual identification of what is in situ and what is not. An exhaustive architectural analysis appended to the volume, including axonometric views, places the decoration in the context of the temple and its building history

An Undertakers' Archive from the Kynopolite Nome (P. Kynopolites)

: This book provides a comprehensive edition of five well-preserved Greek papyri from an archive of undertakers (nekrotaphoi) from the late Ptolemaic Kynopolite nome, four of which unpublished. The texts contain a wealth of information on mummification practices and funerary taxation in this era, in particular concerning the use of the embalming products kedria (Egyptian sfy) and pharmakon (Egyptian phr.t), the traditional seventy-day funerary period, and a mummification procedure in which bodies are temporarily buried in the sand. All this and more is discussed in an extensive commentary combining Greek and Egyptian evidence.

Faience Figurines in Their Archaeological and Museological Contexts (Egypt, Nubia, and the Levant, 2100-1550 BC)

: This is the second of two volumes that explores the world of faience figurines in Egypt and the adjacent areas of the Levant and Nubia during the Middle Bronze Age (2100-1550 BC). Its companion volume is titled Miniature Forms as Transformative Thresholds (BMPES 7). This volume serves as a catalogue raisonne for faience figurines and provides a detailed analysis and description of over 1150 pieces along with their archaeological and museological contexts. The volume is accompanied by numerous drawings, photos, cards, archival material, graphs, tables, maps, and plans. The research is primarily based on material coming from documented archaeological contexts, with two main unpublished cores from Lisht and Byblos, but also includes material from more than 150 sites. The museological research focuses on three main collections: the Petrie Museum, the British Museum, and the Musee du Louvre, but also encompasses a total of 35 different museums in 33 different cities across Europe, Northern Africa, Western Asia, Russia, and the USA, as well as private collections and public auctions. The volume covers not only faience figurines, but also provides a comprehensive study of the material dimension and culture of the late Middle Kingdom (1850-1650 BC), encompassing a diverse range of object groups, including a large corpus of pottery and stone vessels, as well as information on the people and society from that period

Plague in antiquity

: This volume came about based on the recognition that the rise and spread of Covid-19 has led contemporary scholarship to consider the possibility that there will be an increasing acceleration of new and highly transmissible plagues, viruses and other diseases linked to the mass travel and trade that characterizes hyper-globalisation. As historians and archaeologists studying the civilisations of the most distant past, we felt that we had something to contribute to this conversation through providing a historical perspective, with the twin goals of relieving the social anxiety caused by pandemics and taking advantage of our present experiences to see how we might view our own research in a fresh, new light. Archaeologists and scholars of ancient history know that epidemic plagues and other environmental catastrophes are nothing new: disease and illness are clearly represented in the archaeological and historical record. The chapters in this volume focus on plague in antiquity, centred primarily on the ancient Near East. Chronologically, they span the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity, and regionally they cover Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Levant, Cyprus, Anatolia and the Indus valley. The contributors discuss a range of topics related to plague-its causes and transmission, environmental factors, responses and treatments, disruptions and social effects-drawing on ancient texts, modern sociology, archaeological evidence and cultural material remains. The variety of contributions demonstrates that rather than being anomalous, various forms of illness were normal, recurring and prevalent within the ancient world. The authors refer to the current Covid-19 pandemic, which was also inspiration in producing this work. This volume contributes to the contextualistion of plague, pestilence, disease and disability within wider and deeper human history

The Feast of the Desert of Apa Shenoute : a Liturgical Procession from the White Monastery in Upper Egypt

: An edition and translation of a trilingual manuscript recording the rite of a medieval liturgical procession at the White Monastery (Dayr al-Anba Shinudah) in Upper Egypt, accompanied by two introductions. Primarily in Coptic, with selected sections in Greek and Arabic, the original text is preserved in the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris (BN Copte 68), and it includes rubrics of biblical passages and a sermon by Shenoute meant to be read at different points during the procession. The first introduction situates the manuscript in relation to the history, archaeology, and ritual practice of the monastery. The second introduction provides a technical description of the manuscript and of the editorial methods used in producing the edition. The introductions, edition, and translation are supplemented by tables with selected images, an index of biblical citations, and a bibliography

'PTOLEMY'S ZOO'

King Seneb-Kay's tomb and the necropolis of a lost dynasty at Abydos

: This volume is the publication and analysis of the tomb of pharaoh Seneb-Kay (ca. 1650-1600 BCE), and a cemetery of associated tombs at Abydos, all attributable to a group of kings of Egypt's Second Intermediate Period. The tomb of Seneb-Kay has provided the first known king's tomb of pharaonic Egypt that included decorated imagery in the burial chamber. That evidence, discussed in detail in the volume, allows us to identify this previously unknown ruler along with a group of seven similar tombs that can be attributed to an Upper Egyptian Dynasty that survived for approximately half a century during a period of pronounced territorial fragmentation in the Nile Valley. The book examines the architecture and artifacts associated with these tombs, as well as presents an osteological analysis of the bodies of Seneb-Kay and the other anonymous individuals buried at South Abydos. Seneb-Kay's skeletonized mummy was recovered inside his tomb and provides a rare opportunity to examine the body of a king of this era. He is the earliest substantially preserved body of an Egyptian king to survive in the archaeological record, and the first known Egyptian pharaoh whose skeletal remains show that he died in battle. The analysis of his death in a military encounter, along with insights from the other skeletal remains indicates a line of kings whose rise to power was associated with their social background as members of the military elite. The book examines the wider implications of these bodies in terms of the pronounced militarization of society in the Second Intermediate Period. Seneb-Kay's tomb has also provided extensive evidence through its use of reused blocks bearing decoration, of earlier elite and royal monuments at Abydos. The combination of evidence provides a new archaeological and historical window into the political situation that defined Egypt's Second Intermediate Period
