Indian Ocean Migrants and State Formation in Hadhramaut : Reforming the Homeland /

The author discusses the modern history of Hadhramaut in a novel way. Linked to the Indian Ocean through a long history of migration, she traces the ways in which members of the diaspora and travellers interacted with the homeland through their remittances, political initiatives and the introduction of new ideas and institutions. The book is based on a wide range of hitherto unused Hadhrami and British sources as well as on fieldwork in Yemen and Indonesia. Exemplary life-histories of merchants and scholars illustrate the wide range of concerns for the establishment of stable polities in a tribal society. This is linked to the careful analysis of the impact of imperial rule both in the lands of the diaspora and in Hadhramaut in chapters focussing on state- and institution-formation. Developments in Hadhramaut are regarded as a prism for the development of modernity in the wider Muslim and Indian Ocean worlds which was adapted to local conditions and needs.

More than a hundred years ago on 27 September 1914, a bunch of weary Indians reached Calcutta on a Japanese steamship called the Komagata Maru from Vancouver, Canada. This was the 'bloody' climax of one of the most fascinating episodes in the Indian national movement that continues to inspire popular culture and scholars even today. The present compilation not only gives a complete profile of the Komagata Maru incident but throws light on the Descriptive Roll of Sikhs and Punjabis arrested in connection with the event. The saga of the Komagata Maru is a significant reminder of the character of the criminal exploitation which the colonizers generally inflicted on the people they colonized. The notion of civilizational superiority of the Whites was intrinsic to Imperialism. The commemoration of Komagata Maru is an occasion to explore and investigate how the ruling groups come to imagine and construct 'Others' and 'Undesirables'. Viewing the Komagata Maru project as a 'deliberate plot to foment sedition' pointed to another kind of argument, widely contrary to the perception and objective of the passengers and Baba Gurdit Singh. Over the years the tragic journey of Komagata Maru has inspired South Asian poets and playwrights, historians and journalists to reconstruct and memorialize the event from multiple perspectives. This volume is an attempt to situate the whole event in its historical perspective.

Goli Taraqqi's narratives of displacement and emigration are approached through a theoretical lens that foregrounds the significance of space and the role of retrospective self-narration in acts of cultural representation. Ghardashkhani studies Taraqqi's autobiographical narratives with an emphasis on the unstable meanings of homeland and Farang (a culturally constructed term signifying the West) and, thereby, accounts for Taraqqi's ironical style of narration in her memories of homeland recollected in exile.

Migration and Christian identity in Congo (DRC) /

Christianity and migration have greatly influenced society and culture of sub-Saharan Africa, yet their mutual impact is rarely studied. Through oral history research in north eastern Congo (DRC), this book studies the migration of Anglicans and the subsequent reconfiguring of their Christian identity. It engages with issues of religious contextualisation, revivalism and the rise of Pentecostalism. It examines shifting ethnic, national, gender and generational expressions, the influence of tradition, contemporanity, local needs and international networks to reveal mobile group identities developing through migration. Borrowing the metaphor of 'home' from those interviewed, the book suggests in what ways religious affiliation aids a process of belonging. The result is an original exploration of important themes in an often neglected region of Africa.

Religion, Ethnicity and Transnational Migration between West Africa and Europe focuses on the West African migrants' presence in Europe and the way they negotiate religion and ethnicity in a new context. Special attention is given to the diversity of religious background of the migrants and to exploration of interreligious (especially Christian-Muslim) relations. These dimensions of transnational migration have not been widely researched, yet. After introducing the new African religious diaspora, the situation of the Senegalese, Ghanaian and Fulbe migrants - both Christian and Muslim - in France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland is analysed. The impact the migrants make on their communities of origin in Africa is also taken into account.
