Calvinism and the making of the European mind /

Calvinism must be assigned a significant place among the forces that have shaped modern European culture. Even now, despite its history of religious fragmentation and secularization, Europe continues to bear the marks of a pervasive Calvinist ethos. The character of that ethos is, however, difficult to pin down. In this volume, many of the traditional scholarly conundrums about the relationship between Calvinism and the cultural history of Europe are revisited and re-investigated, to see what new light can be shed on them. For example, how has the ethos of Calvinism, or more broadly the Reformed tradition, affected economic thinking and practice, the development of the sciences, views on religious toleration, or the constitution of European polities? In general, what kind of transformations did Calvinism's distinct spirituality bring about? Such questions demand painstaking and detailed scholarly work, a fine sample of which is published in this volume.

Das Thema Europa bewegt nicht nur die Politik. Wie sah man Europa und was wollte man damit? Wie zeigt es sich jetzt und was für Probleme wirft es auf? Was wird von ihm angstvoll erwartet und sehnlich erhofft? Wie wollen wir es haben und wie sollen wir es gestalten? Was halten wir von seiner Integration und wie stellen wir uns diese vor? Derlei Fragen zu erörtern, fand ende September 1995 in Pozna??n??/Posen ein Symposium unter dem Titel statt, der jetzt auch der Haupttitel des hier angezeigten Jahrbuchs der Duitse Kroniek ist. Aus Deutschland und der Schweiz, den Niederlanden und Portugal waren Teilnehmer angereist zu inteerrkultureller und interdisziplinärer Diskussion. Fast alle der dort gehaltenen Vorträge sind in diesen Sammelband eingegangen, sowie noch einige andere Beiträge. Niederländisch-polnische Beziehungen gibt es auch ansonsten. Sie laufen nicht nur geographisch über Deutschland, das vereinigte nunmehr; schmerzliche Erinnerungen gehören dazu, unterschiedlich, aber erkennbar. Der Niederländer sieht in Polen die Aktualität einer nur allzu vertrauten, aber bei ihm selber abgeebbten Reizbarkeit, bei deutschen Autoren aber Hemmungen, welche in seltsamem Kontrast zur Virtuosität der Gedankenführung stehen. Polen fühlt sich seit langem von Europa verlassen und ihm dennoch nach wie vor zugehörig und erhofft sich dort nunmehr einen angemessenen Spielraum für die Verwirklichung neuer Möglichkeiten, während andere ja schon zu resignieren drohen. Denn auch der Europagedanke ist kompromittiert worden, und das wirkt sich in der Versuchung aus, ihn zu verabschieden und der Frage auszuweichen, was denn zu geschehen habe. Das wird referiert und kommentiert. Die Sinnfrage taucht auf, und philosophische Anstrengungen werden nachgezeichnet in Auseinandersetzung mit Ortega, ter Braak, Guardini, Heidegger, Jaspers, Canetti, Habermas. Bildende Kunst und Musik fehlen nicht ganz. So sei der Leser - der europamüde wie der hoffnungsfrohe - aufgefordert zur Teilnahme an solcher Besinnung.
