Domitianè - Kaiè Latomia (Umm Balad) : Le praesidium et les carrières /

: The excavations carried out at Domitianè/Kainè Latomia (Umm Balad) in 2001‑2003 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs/IFAO have added to our knowledge of the occupation of the Eastern Desert of Egypt in Roman times. This site, located in the Porphyrites massif, has a rock deposit of "granito verde fiorito di bigio" (gray flowered green granite). The attempt to exploit it led to the construction of a small fort by the army under Domitian. It served as a base for the quarry workers. The gate inscription, although very mutilated, indicates a date of construction around 88–92. This early phase does not seem to go beyond the beginning of Trajan’s reign. The praesidium was probably abandoned thereafter, until around 146, when it was reoccupied for only a short period of time, before being abandoned again. The examination of the two quarries provides a lot of information about the organization of the work, but what can be established about their respective histories remains speculative for the most part. The use of Kainè Latomia finally ended in failure, probably due to the poor quality of the stone. However, some blocks were sent to Rome where they were used first of all for the decoration of the Domus Flavia (Flavian Palace) on the Palatine. 4e de couverture .

Guide to Deir el-Medina : village of artists /

: The site of Deir el-Medina is unique in its particularly well-preserved archaeological remains, which represent an exceptional ensemble in Egypt (consisting of a village, a necropolis and a temple), and in the rich documentation that it has delivered across the millennia. The inhabitants of Deir el-Medina--artists as well as craftsmen--dug and decorated the hypogea of the sovereigns in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. They did not restrict the use of their talents to benefit only the sovereigns, but decorated, or had decorated by the most skilled amongst them, their own tombs and were buried with hundreds of cult objects and grave goods. The scribes kept archives, which constitute an incredible wealth of information for the history of the New Kingdom and the functioning of the royal sites. They also had literary interests, and some of them established libraries, which are considered among the richest of those that have survived. Walking around the site of Deir el-Medina and studying the paintings that adorn the walls of the rock tombs, the visitor will get to know the spirit of its occupants, their earthly ambitions, the religious and funerary universe of their conception of the afterlife and also the feasts of the multiple deities who composed the local pantheon. Coming upon the temple, built in the Ptolemaic period, comes as a perfect ending to this archaeological walk

Europos-Doura.

: This first issue of Europos-Doura Varia 1 follows Doura-Europos Études (I-V) who latest issues dealt with developments in the French-Syrian Expedition of Doura-Europos (MFSED) between 1986 and 1997. The change in the name of the site that this issue is introducing takes into account new historical discoveries that entail a shift from 'Doura-Europos' to Europos-Doura'. Europos was the name for a Greek phrourion then the Hellenistic and Parthian city for five centuries. Nevertheless, the name 'Doura' was used for half a century after the Roman conquest until the name 'Europos' came back during the last years of the city. Therefore, Europos seems more relevant to name this site while attaching the name of Doura to it. Articles in this volume are devoted to archaeological excavations findings of this site along with papers regarding materials and historical debates. These arguments enrich perceptions of the famous expeditions of F. Cumont (1922-1924) and M.I. Rostovtzeff (1928-1937). While the MFSED relies on these accounts, the articles in this volume modify sometimes the legacy of these expeditions.
