The lack of a well organised index of synonyms of plant names for the period of the later Middle Ages has increasingly been felt by historians, philologists and sociologists to be one of the big lacunas in their field. In his Boec van medicinen in Dietsche (Brill, 1967) Willem F. Daems presented in a Synonymarium van Middelnederlandse Plantennamen a summary of the plant names which occurred in a single text conceived in c. 1300. He now evaluates, assigns parameters for meaning to and in the majority of cases identifies the pharmaco-botanical material contained in about 100 medieval manuscripts and text editions (German, Dutch and English). The depth and breadth of the author's botanical knowledge is widely recognised and the combination of this with his background in history and philology make this book a long-awaited and indispensable standard reference work in the field.

In Speech and Thought in Latin War Narratives , Suzanne Adema offers linguistic and narratological tools to analyse and interpret narratorial choices in speech and thought representation in Latin narratives. Her approach combines insights from (cognitive) linguistic and narratological theories and has been tested and adjusted through corpus based research (Caesar, Vergil, Sallust). The approach is a useful tool to unveil rhetorical uses of speech and thought representation in Latin war narrative by means of close readings of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum 1 and 7, and Vergil's Aeneid 11 and 12. Focusing on the attitudes of the narrators towards war, Adema provides new insights into these texts and offers linguistic and narratological contributions to literary and historical discussions about the Bellum Gallicum and the Aeneid .

The language of the freedmen in Petronius' Cena Trimalchionis /

Realistic representation of the speech of the lower classes in ancient literature is largely confined to the comic genres, and Petronius' realism in this area is more thorough-going than that of any other ancient author. A vast scholarly literature has grown up around the question of how faithfully the speeches of Petronius' freedmen reflect characteristics of actual popular speech; this literature is reviewed and evaluated. A survey of the phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic peculiarities in these speeches is then undertaken, in which they are compared with other 'vulgar' Latin sources such as the Pompeian inscriptions; Petronius is in fact one of our most important early sources for the study of popular Latin. The way in which Petronius used specific varieties of non-standard Latin to characterize different freedmen speakers is explored: Petronius has subtly modulated his freedmen's speeches to reflect differing emotional states and the different attitudes of the speakers toward their social position. The present study is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject undertaken in over forty years in any language and the only one in English.

In four separate studies, Andreas Heil shows that Seneca, in his tragedies Thyestes , Hercules furens , Troas ( Troades ) and Medea , handles dramatic time less experimentally than has been assumed before. In all of these plays, taking into consideration the accompanying action on the stage and the characters' respective points of view, a gradually developing plot can be reconstructed. Thus, the survey considerably deepens our understanding of Seneca's dramatic technique. In vier Einzelstudien zeigt Andreas Heil, daß Seneca mit der dramatischen Zeit in seinen Tragödien Thyestes , Hercules furens , Troas ( Troades ) und Medea weniger experimentell verfährt, als bislang angenommen wurde. In allen untersuchten Stücken läßt sich - berücksichtigt man die begleitende Bühnenhandlung und die jeweilige Figurenperspektive - eine sukzessive sich entwickelnde Handlung rekonstruieren. Die Untersuchung leistet somit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis der dramatischen Technik Senecas.

Plato is well known both for the harsh condemnations of images and image-making poets that appear in his dialogues and for the vivid and intense imagery that he himself uses in his matchless prose. Through their resemblance to true reality, images have the power to move their viewers to action and to change themselves, but because of their distance from true reality, that power always remains problematic. Two recurrent problems addressed here are how an image resembles what it represents and how to avoid mistaking that image for what it represents. In Figures de l'épouvante grecques de l'antiquité au présent , Maria Patera examines an unfamiliar aspect of the Greek pedagogy of fear, illustrated by narratives about four Greek terrifying figures: Lamia, Mormô, Gellô and Empousa. These female bogeys belong to the children's world. Each of those figures provokes fear in a particular way, according to its own characteristics (metamorphosis, hybridity, cannibalism, et cetera). By means of a diachronic comparison of the ancient figures with their Byzantine and modern Greek namesakes, each of them is assigned a proper position within its specific historical, cultural, and religious context. Dans Figures de l'épouvante grecques de l'antiquité au présent , Maria Patera examine un aspect mal connu de la pédagogie grecque, celui de la peur, illustré à travers des récits principalement destinés aux enfants à propos des épouvantails Lamia, Mormô, Gellô et Empousa. Ces quatre figures féminines appartiennent aux chambres enfantines et aux contes de bonnes femmes.
