The Persianate World: Rethinking a Shared Sphere is among the first books to explore the pre-modern and early modern historical ties among such diverse regions as Anatolia, the Iranian plateau, Central Asia, Western Xinjiang, the Indian subcontinent, and southeast Asia, as well as the circumstances that reoriented these regions and helped break up the Persianate ecumene in modern times. Essays explore the modalities of Persianate culture, the defining features of the Persianate cosmopolis, religious practice and networks, the diffusion of literature across space, subaltern social groups, and the impact of technological advances on language. Taken together, the essays reflect the current scholarship in Persianate studies, and offer pathways for future research.

This volume contains a collection of studies describing and analyzing stereotypes of women in the religions of Ancient Israel and Mesopotamia, and in Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Medieval Christianity, Islam, Indian Sufism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Tibetan religions, and modern Neopaganism. In all these traditions the stereotypes are based on generalizations, which are socially, culturally or religiously legitimized, and which seem to have a lasting influence on society's conceptions of women. They represent oversimplified opinions, which are, however, regularly challenged by the women who are affected by them. In all traditions the stereotypes are ambiguous, either because women have challenged their validity, or because historical developments in society have reshaped them. They influence public opinion by emphasizing dominant views, as a strategy to restrain women and to keep them controlled by the rules and morals of a male-dominated society.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the Arabic documents uncovered in Quseir, Upper Egypt, during the 1980s. The hundreds of paper fragments shed light on activities and operations of a family shipping business on the Red Sea shore in the thirteenth century. Part One is an introductory essay on historical and cultural context of these documents. The three chapters deal with, respectively, the "Sheikh's house," where the documents were found, the Red Sea commerce as reflected in the trade activities around the house, and aspects of popular culture as revealed through the texts. Part Two comprises a critical edition of eighty-four Arabic texts, the majority of which have never been published before, with translation and commentary.

The formula 'for the life of' is often found in votive inscriptions, cast in Aramaic and other languages, which originate from the Syrian-Mesopotamian desert and adjacent areas and which roughly date from the first three centuries A.D. They belong to objects like statues and altars that usually were erected in temples and other structures with a ritual or sacred function. The inscriptions establish a relationship between the dedicator and one or more beneficiaries, those persons for whose life the dedication was made. Since the social context evidently bears on both the meaning of the inscriptions as well as the status of the dedications, this volume deals with the nature of the relationships and the socio-religious function the dedications perform.

Témoignages de ses travaux, mais aussi de son regard attentif sur la vie quotidienne en Égypte, Étienne Drioton a laissé une importante collection de clichés réalisés entre 1924 et 1952, dont beaucoup sont encore inédits. Cet ouvrage vous propose de lui emboîter le pas au fil du Nil. Tout d'abord l'égyptologue nous entraîne vers les sites archéologiques de Haute Égypte : Médamoud et Tôd, où il travaille entre 1925 et 1936, puis Karnak, Louqsor et Deir el-Médineh. À côté de la réalisation d'une multitude de clichés de sites et de fouilles, il s'intéresse aussi à la réalité quotidienne des habitants de ces contrées. Il entre dans les villages, réalise des portraits de personnages typiques, rencontre les fellahs, fixe par l'image les travaux des champs. En juin 1936, alors qu'il est Directeur général du Service des antiquités au Caire, le pays se présente comme un vaste chantier. Ici on fouille, là on reconstitue un monument. En tenue civile ou coiffé du tarbouche officiel, il visite les sites, accompagnant parfois de hautes personnalités qui ont marqué l'histoire. Ce sont pour nous autant d'occasions de découvrir les vestiges de l'Égypte pharaonique tels qu'ils se présentaient en cette première moitié du XXe siècle. Voyage sur le Nil en compagnie du roi Farouk, reconstitution du complexe funéraire de Djeser à Saqqara, découvertes des tombes royales de Tanis, sont autant de points forts qui jalonnent cet album. This volume examines the influence of literacy on the development of different genres of mourning in ancient Greece. The oral tradition of lament in the Homeric poems forms the point of departure for close readings of epigraphic material and written texts commemorating the dead in the archaic and classical periods, including grave epigrams, threnoi, tragedy, and Athenian epitaphioi . These texts reveal the non-linear development of Greek literacy and offer insight into the ongoing influence of lament in diverse poetic genres and the evolving uses of death and mourning in different media. In particular, the discussion focuses on the role of writing in commemorating soldiers and the evolution of the written memorial into a historical and civic medium of communication.
