The Reception of Aristotle's Metaphysics in Avicenna's Kitāb al-Šifā' : A Milestone of Western Metaphysical Thought /
:
This volume deals with the reception of Aristotle's Metaphysic s in the masterpiece on metaphysics by Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037 C.E.), one of the major exponents of Arabic philosophy: the Ilāhiyyāt (Science of Divine Things) of the Kitāb al-Šifā' ( Book of the Cure ), known in the Latin Middle Ages as Liber de Philosophia Prima sive Scientia Divina. The first part of the book (on the Arabic translations of the Metaphysics , al-Kindī and al-Fārābī) introduces the discussion of Avicenna's reshaping of the epistemological profile of the Metaphysics in Part II (his account of the subject-matter, structure, method and role of metaphysics in the system of sciences) and the recasting of its contents in Part III. The present volume provides the first systematic comparison of the Ilāhiyyāt with the Metaphysics and a comprehensive account of this latter's transmission in pre-Avicennian Greek and Arabic philosophy.

Thinking being : introduction to metaphysics in the classical tradition /
:
In Thinking Being , Eric Perl articulates central ideas and arguments regarding the nature of reality in Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, and Aquinas. He shows that, throughout this tradition, these ideas proceed from and return to the indissoluble togetherness of thought and being, first clearly expressed by Parmenides. The emphasis throughout is on continuity rather than opposition: Aristotle appears as a follower of Plato in identifying being as intelligible form, and Aquinas as a follower of Plotinus in locating the first principle "beyond being". Hence Neoplatonism, itself a coherent development of Platonic thought, comes to be seen as the mainstream of classical philosophy. Perl's book thus contributes to a revisionist understanding of the fundamental outlines of the western tradition in metaphysics.

Being in America : sixty years of the Metaphysical Society.
:
Since its founding in 1950, the Metaphysical Society of America has remained a pluralistic community dedicated to rigorous philosophical inquiry into the most basic metaphysical questions. At each year's conference, the presidential address offers original insights into metaphysical questions. Both the insights and the questions are as perennial as they are relevant to contemporary philosophers. This volume collects eighteen of the finest representatives from those presidential addresses, including contributions from George Allan, Richard Bernstein, Norris Clarke, Vincent Colapietro, Frederick Ferré, Jorge J. E. Gracia, Joseph Grange, Marjorie Grene, George Klubertanz, Ivor Leclerc, Ralph McInerny, Ernan McMullin, Joseph Owens, John Herman Randall, Jr., Nicholas Rescher, Stanley Rosen, John E. Smith, and Robert Sokolowski. Also included are Paul Weiss's inaugural address to the Society, an introduction chronicling the history of the Society, and an original Foreword by William Desmond and Epilogue by Robert Neville.

'Abd al-Lạtīf al-Bagdadi's philosophical journey : from Aristotle's Metaphysics to the 'Metaphysical Science' /
:
Although the philosopher ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Baġdādī (1162 -1231) received an extensive education in the thought of Avicenna, he still journeyed long in search of true philosophy. It was in Cairo that he finally discovered a model of philosophical metaphysics rooted in Greek thought as set out in Kindian and Farabian writings. This volume is devoted to the study of Aristotle's Metaphysics and other Greek metaphysical writing gathered together by this Muslim philosopher to form a 'Metaphysical Science' in his Book of the Science of Metaphysics ( Kitāb fī ʿilm mā baʿd al-ṭabīʿa ).
