Ships and sea-power before the great Persian War : the ancestry of the ancient trireme /

: This book presents a new theory about the developments in shipping and naval organization that culminated in the invention - around 530 BC in the eastern Mediterranean - of the trireme, and the subsequent adoption of this first specialized warship of antiquity by all the naval powers of the time. New interpretations are proposed of Greek and Assyrian iconographic data and of hitherto ignored evidence in Herodotos and Thukydides, the non-military factors determining developments are emphasized. Thukydides' fundamental essay on the genesis of Greek sea-powers is studied in depth, the rarity of these sea-powers stressed, and the peculiar background of the naval power of Phokaia and the Samian tyrant Polykrates exposed. The problem of the trireme's place of origin, the factors determining its invention, probably in Saïte Egypt, and its immediate adoption by the Persian king Kambyses are discussed. The first naval operations of the Persians are surveyed, reasons and circumstances of the trireme's introduction into the navies of the Greek city-states analysed with special attention for Themistokles' navy bill. The book offers ancient historians and classical philologists a radically new approach to archaic maritime and naval history. It will also be useful to (nautical) archaeologists.

Politics and persuasion in Aristophanes' Ecclesiazusae /

: This study shows that the Ecclesiazusae is an affirmation of the importance of persuasion in the fourth- century democracy. Praxagora, the attractive and articulate female protagonist, virtually personifies peitho , the realm of both political persuasion and erotic seduction. The ability of peitho to address both public and private motivations makes it the perfect instrument to resolve the tension in the fourth century between selfishness and civic participation. This is, after all, the central issue in the later episodes of the play.

Homeric morality /

: Homeric Morality is an attempt to answer two questions: whether or not the Homeric gods are concerned with 'justice' in human society, and what mechanism controls the social behaviour of Homeric man. It shows that the gods distribute good and bad fortune to men not in response to their moral behaviour, bus as required by fate; men, however, believe that the gods are concerned with human morality, and subsequently their behaviour is restrained by their faith in the moral gods as well as by many other forces, social and emotional. This volume, taken as a whole, serves as a sustained critique of two influential works in the field, The Justice of Zeus by H. Lloyd- Jones and Merit and Responsibility by A.W.H. Adkins.

Eduard Meyer : Leben und Leistung eines Universalhistorikers /

: Eduard Meyer (1855-1930) was among the most important historians of his age. After Mommsen he is the best known German ancient historian. From 1902 he taught ancient history in Berlin and from 1919/20 he was vice-chancellor. Warrior women : the anonymous Tractatus de mulieribus /

: This study analyzes the anonymous Tractatus de Mulieribus , a brief, virtually unknown Greek work, telling of fourteen outstanding women, Greek and barbarian, notable for their intelligence, initiative and courage. The first part of the book is a comprehensive introduction to the treatise and includes - in addition to the original text and an English translation - an examination of both the content and form of De Mulieribus , particularly as a catalogue of women. The times, methods, and purposes of the anonymous author are also investigated. Commentary-essays on the individual women then follow. A wide variety of sources are utilized in order to sketch the fullest possible portrait of each of these lively women. This book, the very first study of De Mulieribus , is a useful introduction to a remarkable treatise.

Xenophon's Sparta : an introduction /

: Xenophon is usually believed to have written his Hellenica as a general ''history of his own times'' in Greece, and is criticized for his disproportionately close attention to Spartan affairs and his apparent bias in favour of the Spartans. But his treatment of Sparta is much more coherent and purposive than has been noticed; and knowing the cirumstances of his life, we should consider that there were ample reasons of prudence (at least) for him to have written with much circumspection about Sparta and especially about Agesilaus and Agesilaus' friends. This methodical interpretative study of Lysander in the Hellenica as well as of the Polity of the Lacedaemonians demonstrates that Xenophon wrote aobut this city - famous for the communal life of its citizens - with critical and philosophic intent. As a case study in reading classical history, it might signal the need for a complete reevaluation of other historians as well.

Grammar as interpretation : Greek literature in its linguistic contexts /

: Looking at its subject from the standpoint of modern discourse analysis, this study deals with problems of style and grammar in Greek and Latin texts. Its aim is to shed light on the interaction between the mechanism of the Greek and Latin languages as interactive tools and the structure of the texts that have come down to us. The interpretive orientation offered differs from most literary studies in its taking linguistic observations as point of departure, and its considering grammar as a positive factor in the interpretive process. It differs from most linguistic studies in the field in demonstrating the importance of linguistic methodology for classical philology in general. The book contains studies of various authors, genres, and text types, preceded by an introductory essay on the role of grammar in philology.

Greek readers' digests? : studies on a selection of subliterary papyri /

: This volume discusses Greek subliterary papyri containing mythical catalogues, stories of the Mythographus Homericus, and summaries of Iliad, Odyssey , tragedies, comedies, and poems of Callimachus. The first part of the book explores the following questions: what kind of knowledge is transmitted in the papyri and how is this done? How is the knowledge related to that found in other literature? What do we know about the function and readership of these papyri? Although comparable questions have been asked before regarding some papyri, this study attempts to present a more precise and comprehensive picture based on a systematic examination of all the relevant papyri. The second part contains all the papyrus texts discussed in the first part, thereby offering a convenient aid to the reader and a useful instrument for future research.

A textual history of Cicero's Academici libri /

: This book addresses the problems surrounding Cicero's Academici Libri , including why the work exists in two different editions, why and when the work became fragmentary, and how it managed to survive. It achieves this by tracing the history and influence of the work from Antiquity to the present day. The main part of the book studies the manuscript tradition of the work. All extant manuscripts are fully described and their textual relationships are established. Historical information is assessed in order to show the part which manuscripts played in intellectual life, conclusions are reached on the archetype of the work and a full stemma of the tradition is built. The book contains a wealth of bibliographical information and will serve as a base for further study in the transmission of Cicero's works.

Commentaries on Pindar.

: This volume contains word-for-word commentaries on Pindar's Olympian Odes 10 and 11, and on Nemean 11 and Isthmian 2. These are preceded by a large number of notes on Olympian 1, intended to form a supplement to D.E. Gerber's edition (1982). The author has tried to explain peculiarities of grammar and nuances of meaning as fully as possible, but due attention is paid to figures of style and problems of poetic structure. The interpretations proposed by the author - many of which are new - are accompanied by an adequate documentation, including a critical examination of other views. This documentation has been made more easily accessible by detailed indexes, one of subjects and one of Greek words. The book forms a sequel to volume I, which contains commentaries on Olympians 3, 7, 12, 14. A third volume on Pythians 1, 8, 10 is intended to conclude the series.
