The Feast of the Desert of Apa Shenoute : a Liturgical Procession from the White Monastery in Upper Egypt

: An edition and translation of a trilingual manuscript recording the rite of a medieval liturgical procession at the White Monastery (Dayr al-Anba Shinudah) in Upper Egypt, accompanied by two introductions. Primarily in Coptic, with selected sections in Greek and Arabic, the original text is preserved in the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris (BN Copte 68), and it includes rubrics of biblical passages and a sermon by Shenoute meant to be read at different points during the procession. The first introduction situates the manuscript in relation to the history, archaeology, and ritual practice of the monastery. The second introduction provides a technical description of the manuscript and of the editorial methods used in producing the edition. The introductions, edition, and translation are supplemented by tables with selected images, an index of biblical citations, and a bibliography

From gnostics to monastics : studies in coptic and early christianity in honor of Bentley Layton /

: This collection of studies is offered in honor of Bentley Layton by twenty-three of his colleagues and former students. Prof. Layton taught the history of ancient Christianity and also the Coptic language at Yale University for forty years beginning in 1976. At that time he was already recognized internationally as a leading figure in the publication and study of the Coptic Gnostic texts from the Nag Hammadi Codices and in Coptic linguistic and manuscript studies, two areas of research that are represented in this volume by sections on Gnostic, Valentinian, and Manichaean literature, and on Coptic language and texts. A section on Egyptian monasticism pays tribute to Prof. Layton's fundamental contributions to the study of the late antique monastic leader and Coptic author Shenoute. A final section looks north across the Mediterranean Sea to early Chistianity in the Wider Late Roman World.

A newly discovered Greek Father : Cassian the Sabaite eclipsed by John Cassian of Marseilles /

: This is a critical edition of texts of Codex 573 (ninth century, Monastery of Metamorphosis, Meteora, Greece), which are published along with the monograph identifying The Real Cassian , in the same series. They cast light on Cassian the Sabaite, a sixth century highly erudite intellectual, whom Medieval forgery replaced with John Cassian. The texts are of high philological, theological, and philosophical value, heavily pregnant with notions characteristic of eminent Greek Fathers, especially Gregory of Nyssa. They are couched in a distinctly technical Greek language, which has a meaningful record in Eastern patrimony, but mostly makes no sense in Latin, which is impossible to have been their original language. The Latin texts currently attributed to John Cassian, the Scythian of Marseilles, are heavily interpolated translations of this Greek original by Cassian the Sabaite, native of Scythopolis, who is identified with Pseudo-Caesarius and the author of Pseudo Didymus' De Trinitate . Codex 573, entitled The Book of Monk Cassian , preserves also the sole extant manuscript of the Scholia in Apocalypsin, the chain of comments that were falsely attributed to Origen a century ago. A critical edition of these Scholia has been published in a separate edition volume, with commentary and an English translation (Cambridge).
: A critical edition of texts written by Cassian the Sabaite and preserved in Codex 573 of the Monastery of Metamorphosis (the Great Meteoron), in Meteora, Greece; the codex is entitled "The book of Monk Cassian the Roman." Cf. Preface, pages [xi]. : 1 online resource (xv, 715 pages) : Includes bibliographical references (p. 639-695) and indexes. : 9789004225275 : 0920-623X ; : Available to subscribing member institutions only.
