Gegenüber anderen Menschen haben wir Achtungspflichten aufgrund des Gebots, nicht zu schaden, aufgrund ihrer moralischen Rechte und eventuell auch aufgrund besonderer Nahbeziehungen, in denen wir zu ihnen stehen. Auch wenn wir uns selbst gegenüber keine derartigen Pflichten haben, ist insbesondere die Moral innerhalb von Nahbeziehungen wichtig für unser Verständnis von Selbstachtung. An ihnen lässt sich nachvollziehen, dass zu unserer moralischen Praxis auch die persönlichen Haltungen gehören, in denen wir einander begegnen. Selbstachtung ist eine selbstreflexive Haltung, die wir unter bestimmten Bedingungen einnehmen können. Sie einzuüben ist notwendig, um mitbestimmen zu können, wer man ist und sein will, und um sich um seiner selbst willen wertschätzen zu können.
