Special Delivery to Wah-sut: An Eighteenth Dynasty Ostracon’s Inventory of Precious Materials /

: The following publication analyzes Ostracon SA. 2708 discovered during 2001 University of Pennsylvania Museum excavations in the ancient South Abydos town, Wah-sut. The ostracon enumerates a local delivery of unworked precious and semiprecious materials including gold, lapis lazuli, and jasper during the Eighteenth Dynasty. The ostracon provides a glimpse into the development and continued occupation of Wah-sut from the late Middle Kingdom into the New Kingdom and reveals evidence of deliveries of semiprecious stones in South Abydos not otherwise represented in the archaeological record. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/jarce.52.2016.a015

A New Ramesside Copy of the Teaching of Amenemhat: The Hieratic Ostracon from Abydos /

: A newly excavated ostracon from Abydos bearing the concluding chapter of “The Instruction (a.k.a. Teaching) of King Amenemhat” opens up an interesting enquiry. An ostracon found in the immediate vicinity of a New Kingdom royal memorial temple and carrying an excerpt from a major literary text is an important find, as it develops our insight into New Kingdom educational practices and intellectual quests. The range of ostraca types and text genres appearing in the area of the temple of Ramesses II points to a fully functional temple organization with a building phase and an operational phase, with supplies and literate personnel on site, potentially in different administrative roles. Studies in educational and intellectual pursuits, in turn, are key to expanding our comprehension of the functions—and enjoyment—of Egyptian culture.

An Ostracon Depicting a King at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC 1920.255) /

: Publication of a gured ostracon held in the Art Institute of Chicago. Likely deriving from a western Theban context, the limestone flake bears a sketch of a king on the recto and textual inscriptions on the verso. An evaluation of the drawing, as well as an edition of the previously unpublished hieratic texts, is presented. The pristine surface of the figured recto in contrast to the multiple uses on the verso suggests that the object had a complex use history. Uses as a ritual object and for scribal practice are considered. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/jarce.56.2020.a003

Dead Sea Scrolls Handbook /

: Dead Sea Scrolls Handbook presents Hebrew and Aramaic transcriptions of approximately 450 non-biblical texts from Qumran, arranged according to the sequential number of the composition and the Qumran Cave. Thus, the texts are arranged as follows: 1Q14, 1QpHab, 1Q15, 1Q16, 1Q17, and so forth. This arrangement provides straightforward access to the texts in a single volume and facilitates usage of the Handbook . The Handbook 's texts, derived from the works of competent and accomplished Qumran scholars, represent significant contributions to Qumran studies.

Qumran, the site of the Dead Sea scrolls : archaeological interpretations and debates : proceedings of a conference held at Brown University, November 17-19, 2002 /

: Today, archaeology plays an ever growing role in Qumran studies. Fifteen papers presented in 2002 at Brown University provide the necessary data to break new ground in the recent debate about the character of Qumran. Section I discusses material from old and new excavations that help assess the validity of the traditional Qumran-Essene hypothesis. Part II discusses various aspects of the main settlement such as division of space, the character of period III, the date of the cave scroll deposits and the use of food. Part III deals with the Qumran cemetery and a similar graveyard at Khirbet Qazone. Part IV places Qumran into a wider regional context, concentrating on local agriculture and ceramic production. The articles strongly call for a new awareness for archaeological detail and, in their various ways, instigate a renewed debate about how to bring texts and material culture into a meaningful dialogue.

Sixty-five papyrological texts : presented to Klaas A. Worp on the occasion of his 65th birthday /

: This volume contains editions of sixty-five Greek, Demotic, Coptic and Arabic texts from Egypt, contributed as a token of friendship and respect by forty-six of Klaas Worp's colleagues and co-authors upon his retirement from the Papyrological Institute of the University of Leiden in August 2008. The contents are as diverse as Klaas Worp's own wide range of interests, and provide a vivid impression of life and culture in Graeco-Roman Egypt. The texts are written on papyrus, potsherds, parchment, paper and wood. They include both literary and documentary papyri and ostraca, and date from the third century BC to the eleventh century AD. They are published fully, most for the first time, with transcriptions and translations, and are accompanied by photographs.

Flores Florentino : Dead Sea Scrolls and other early Jewish studies in honour of Florentino Garcia Martinez /

: This volume contains forty-eight essays, presented by friends, colleagues and students from many countries, in honour of Florentino García Martínez, director of the Groningen Qumran Institute, editor-in-chief of the Journal for the Study of Judaism, and professor in Leuven. The majority of the essays are in the areas of the honoree's own scholarship and interests, including primarily Qumranica, but also many other fields of Second Temple Judaism, from late biblical texts and Septuagint up to early rabbinic writings. Florentino's own polyglottism, evident from his bibliography, and his close relations with many scholars from Southern Europe, is reflected in the inclusion of a few French, Spanish and Italian articles in this volume.

Ramesside Hieratic Stela of the Sandal Maker Penone in the Egyptian Museum Cairo (TR. 27.6.24.3) /

: The hieratic stela (TR. 27.6.24.3) in the Egyptian Museum Cairo represents an interesting deposition which belongs to the sandal maker, Penone, and a woman named Ta‘at. This stela represents one of the earliest known incised hieratic examples from the Ramesside Period. The article presents a full transcription and translation with commentary on the text. Particular attention is paid to the palaeography of the text. It also shows the purpose of writing this kind of subject on this stela instead of an ostracon or papyrus. The choice of the hieratic rather than the hieroglyphic script for this stela is examined as well.

The language of the papyri /

: The modern rediscovery of the Greek and Latin papyri from Egypt has transformed our knowledge of the ancient world. We cannot, however, make the same claim in the specific area of language study. Although important studies of the language of the papyri have appeared sporadically over the past century, we are still dealing today with a linguistic resource of extraordinary richness which has hardly begun to be explored. Every scrap of papyrus and every ostracon (potsherd) or tablet unearthed has the potential to change some aspect of the way we think about the Greek and Latin languages. This book demonstrate that potential, by gathering together essays from seventeen scholars who present a variety of perspectives and methodological approaches. The Language of the Papyri charts current directions of international research, and will also provide a stimulus for future work."--Jacket.

New Kingdom ostraca from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridg e

: This book publishes a previously unknown collection of hieratic ostraca from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The texts include a broad range of genres, including wisdom literature, religious hymns, magical texts, medical recipes, private letters, administrative notes, scribal exercises ( Kemit ), and copies of tomb inscriptions. Each ostracon is presented with photographs, facsimile drawings and hieroglyphic transcriptions, as well as translations and brief philological commentaries. Many of the texts can be linked to the village of Deir el-Medina on internal evidence, and the book offers new data to scholars working with material from this famous site.
