In Violence in the Hebrew Bible scholars reflect on texts of violence in the Hebrew Bible, as well as their often problematic reception history. Authoritative texts and traditions can be rewritten and adapted to new circumstances and insights. Texts are subject to a process of change. The study of the ways in which these (authoritative) biblical texts are produced and/or received in various socio-historical circumstances discloses a range of theological and ideological perspectives. In reflecting on these issues, the central question is how to allow for a given text's plurality of possible and realised meanings while also retaining the ability to form critical judgments regarding biblical exegesis. This volume highlight that violence in particular is a fruitful area to explore this tension.

Institutional Violence /

Violence can be physical and psychological. It can characterize personal actions, forms of group activity, and abiding social and political policy. This book includes all of these aspects within its focus on institutional forms of violence. Institution is also a broad category, ranging from formal arrangements such as the military, the criminal code, the death penalty and prison system, to more amorphous but systemic situations indicated by parenting, poverty, sexism, work, and racism. Violence is as complex as the human beings who resort to it; its institutional forms pervade our relational lives. We are all participants in it as victims and perpetrators. The chapters in this book were written in the hope that violence can be explicated, even if not fully understood, and that such clarification can help us in devising less violent forms of living, even if it does not lead to its total abolition. The studies bring new aspects of violence to light and offer a number of suggestions for its remedy.

In Gewalt und Unmaking in Lucans Bellum Civile entwickelt Hans-Peter Nill einen theoretischen Zugang zu zentralen Gewaltdarstellungen in Lucans Bürgerkriegsepos. Hierfür verknüpft er narratologische, wirkungsästhetische und soziologische Theorien und Methoden. Im Zentrum der Analysen stehen die Formen und Modalitäten der narrativ repräsentierten Gewalt. Ziel ist, ,Lucanische Gewalt' als vielschichtiges, offenes Gebilde herauszustellen und sich von einer Reduzierung auf vermeintlich ,typische' Partien zu distanzieren. Die Studie unternimmt den Versuch aufzuzeigen, dass über den Hebel der Gewalt erzählte Welt ( fabula ) und narrative Repräsentation ( story ) in eine dynamische Wechselwirkung treten, und so illusionsdurchbrechende Wirkung erzeugt wird. Insgesamt wird Unmaking an Aspekten wie Ästhetik und Zerstückelung, Verdichtung, Tension, Suspense und Exzess exemplarisch aufgezeigt. In Gewalt und Unmaking in Lucans Bellum Civile Hans-Peter Nill offers a theoretical approach to essential narrative representations of violence in Lucan's civil war epic, combining theories and methods of narratology, reception aesthetics, and sociology. The focus of the analyses lies on the configurations and modes of violence as represented in the text. The objective is to present 'Lucanesque violence' as a multifaceted, open structure, instead of reducing it to allegedly 'typical' scenes. The study aims to demonstrate that the narrated world ( fabula ) and its narrative representation ( story ) become dynamically intertwined by means of violence, which has a disturbing effect on narrative immersion. Altogether, Unmaking is exemplified by aspects such as aesthetics and mutilation, densification, tension, suspense, and excess .

According to Deuteronomy 7, God commands Israel to exterminate the indigenous population of Canaan. In The Command to Exterminate the Canaanites: Deuteronomy 7 , Arie Versluis offers an analysis and evaluation of this command. Following an exegesis of the chapter, the historical background, possible motives and the place of the nations of Canaan in the Hebrew Bible are investigated. The theme of religiously inspired violence continues to be a topic of interest. The present volume discusses the consequences of the command to exterminate the Canaanites for the Old Testament view of God and for the question whether the Bible legitimizes violence in the present. This volume offers a thematic study of an integral part of the Hebrew text of Esther, namely, violence. In The Dynamics of Violence and Revenge in the Hebrew Book of Esther , Francisco-Javier Ruiz-Ortiz makes the first ever monographic research on the topics of hostility and the mechanisms of revenge as expressed by the author of the Hebrew book of Esther. The present book is divided into two parts consisting of three chapters each. After an introductory chapter reviewing previous studies on the book of Esther, the author analyses the main vocabulary of violence and revenge in this biblical text before studying the narrative of Esther from the point of view of violence. The results of these two avenues of research are then applied on three pericopes which are representative of the dynamics of violence. Each of the chosen texts illustrates how violence and revenge are used by the author to express the message of survival and the importance of the Jewish people.

Religion can play a dual role with regard to conflict. It can promote either violence or peace. Religion and Conflict Attribution seeks to clarify the causes of religious conflict as perceived by Christian, Muslim and Hindu college students in Tamil Nadu, India. These students in varying degrees attribute conflict to force-driven causes, namely to coercive power as a means of achieving the economic, political or socio-cultural goals of religious groups. The study reveals how force-driven religious conflict is influenced by prescriptive beliefs like religious practice and mystical experience, and descriptive beliefs such as the interpretation of religious plurality and religiocentrism. It also elaborates on the practical consequences of the salient findings for the educational process.
